Cute Concept, But Food Falls Short
Let me start with the positives: the restaurant is cute. You're welcomed by a large dumpling statue right by the entrance. What really stands out, is the robot that delivers food to your table, a cool touch for those looking to snap some Instagram-worthy pics. The drink selection, including boba and fruit teas, is also a nice perk.
Unfortunately, that's where the highlights end.
If you're in the mood for a unique dining and some fun photos, this place will do it. The menu is available via the QR code located on small stickers near each booth, also, a lot of items from the menu were not available to order on the day we visited, such as all variety of mini steamed dumplings.
But when it comes to the flavor and quality of the food, they missed the train. The wait time for our dishes was long, and we wondered if it might be faster for the human servers to just bring the food instead of relying on the robot.
I visited this location yesterday after seeing the hype on Instagram. We were excited about the rice noodle rolls, so we ordered two, one with shrimp and the other with roast pork. We also tried the Peking duck pancakes (3 in a order), BBQ pork buns (3 in order), and sesame balls for dessert.
For drinks, we got 3 types of tea: jasmine with lychee bubbles (which turned out to be strips of lychee that can be a choking hazard if you're not careful), and a melon tea with pudding. We also tried the Thai iced tea, which unfortunately was so watered down and bland that we couldn't finish it.
While the melon and jasmine teas had good flavors, the strips of lychee flying up the straw is definitely dangerous, especially for small children. The Thai iced tea was a major letdown, it was practically flavorless.
The food was simply disappointing. The Peking duck pancakes were the best thing we ordered, but still had major flaws. While the duck portion was generous, the meat wasn't tender as I've had at other places, and the pancake itself was incredibly sticky. After every bite, I found myself trying to clean the dough off my teeth.
The bbq pork buns were large and packed with filling, but they lacked all the flavor. They were fine, but nothing to brag about. The sesame balls were decent, its a pretty basic dessert, so there's not much to say there.
The rice noodle rolls, however, were a complete disappointment. Both the shrimp and roast pork versions were served in puddles of a watery soy sauce lookin liquid. The noodles themselves were extremely mushy and gooey--not the texture I'm used to. I've had rice noodle rolls plenty of times, especially from well known spots in Brooklyn, NY, and this was just not it. The noodles should have a smooth, gelatinous texture, with the filling folded inside each layer, not this sticky, gooey mess.
The shrimp version had a few decent sized shrimps, but the overall flavor was weak and the texture of the noodles was VERY off. Neither of the rice noodle rolls was finished, we took a couple of bites and left the rest.
It's possible this is just the restaurant's take on rice noodle rolls, but for those familiar with how they should taste and feel, it's not going to impress.
Another issue I noticed was the lack of sanitation measures. The re-usable silver forks and knives were left out in the open for everyone to grab, with no packaging to ensure they were clean. The same station also had disposable Dexi dessert paper plates and a pitcher of ice water with glass cups for customers to use at their own discretion. While it's nice that you can help yourself, I found it a bit concerning that all these items were sitting out in a public space, not far from the garbage bin. Given my attention to hygiene at places I visit, I would have preferred individually wrapped utensils and more attention to cleanliness in these areas.
All in all, while the robot delivery and boba drinks were fun, the food and overall dining experience didn't live up to the hype. If you're looking for a cool spot for photos and a drink, this place might be worth a visit, but don't expect great food, quality or a particularly clean experience.
Also, items were are not cheap, we spent $75 on the 3 drinks and 4 food items.
