We stayed at Ohara Seryo and were absolutely enchanted. Nestled in the peaceful countryside, this ryokan is a true oasis of calm and beauty. The gardens are meticulously cared for and radiate a deep sense of serenity, perfect for relaxing and reconnecting with nature. Its location is ideal for exploring the nearby temples, which added a spiritual and cultural depth to our experience. Every walk around the area felt like a journey through tradition and tranquility. Dinner was exceptional: we had the chance to enjoy traditional kaiseki cuisine and sukiyaki, and it was absolutely delicious. Each dish was refined, beautifully presented, and full of seasonal flavors, a true culinary experience of the highest level. We were very curious to try sleeping on futon and tatami for the first time, and it turned out to be even better than we expected. A unique and surprisingly comfortable way to immerse ourselves in Japanese tradition. The staff were incredibly kind and attentive, always welcoming us with a smile and making us feel right at home. Highly recommended for anyone seeking an authentic, relaxing, and deeply Japanese experience. We'd go back in a heartbeat! ❤️ Thank you for everything

I have nothing to criticize about this place — it’s absolutely worth it. I spent so long trying to find my dream ryokan, just like the ones I’ve seen in manga, and this one truly lived up to it. I booked a tatami room, and I was so impressed by the design and the beautiful garden view. They provided yukata with a cardigan, plus comfy pajamas. The onsen is incredibly good, especially at night when it gives off a more romantic vibe. The amenities they provide are premium as well — Pola shampoo and body wash, and Kose Sekkisei for the face lotion. The location is peaceful, beautiful, rich with culture, and surrounded by lovely scenery. The food was excellent too. I chose the Kaiseki dinner, and every dish was beautiful, healthy, and delicious. I also loved the breakfast — simple but very tasty. I really hope I get the chance to visit this place again.

Our stay at Ohara Onsen Ryokan Seryo was absolutely incredible. We were visiting Japan on our honeymoon, and this ryokan truly captured everything we hoped for — serene, authentic, and welcoming in every way.||From the moment we arrived, the staff were so kind, friendly, and attentive. They went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and special throughout our stay. The gardens were stunning — peaceful and beautifully maintained — and our private onsen felt like pure luxury.||The room was spotless and cozy, with one of the most comfortable beds we had in Japan. Both dinner and breakfast were works of art — beautifully presented and unbelievably delicious. Every dish felt crafted with care and detail, showcasing the very best of Japanese cuisine.||Staying here felt like stepping into a quiet corner of traditional Japan — tranquil, restorative, and full of heart. We can’t recommend it highly enough and will cherish the memories of our time here forever.

We could not recommend this place enough! I was a little hesitant at first because it a bit out of the way and a tad pricey. But it ended up being one of the experiences we loved the most on our trip and 100% worth every penny! The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, the food was outstanding, and the atmosphere of the whole place was beautiful. We only stayed one night after being in Tokyo for several days. It was just the relaxing get away we needed, but I do wish we had stayed an extra night. We hope to came back sometime very soon!

We stayed here our last night in Japan and it an excellent choice! Getting out of the city, having a private garden, a private onsen, a Kaiseki dinner, and a gourmet breakfast made for an expensive 24 hours, but it was 100% worth it. The service was impeccable. We have done a lot of world travel and eaten very well, but both agreed that the Kaiseki dinner was our best fine dining experience ever. My partner was particularly impressed with the beer and wine list. The surroundings- a monastery and picturesque path with little waterfalls - were lovely for an evening stroll. Two minor quibbles - the ceiling-mounted A/C unit had bright lights that lit up the room at night, and the onsen (big enough for us both to fit in!! <3 ) was actually too hot to stay in for long. Still, I would come back in a heartbeat. Strongly recommended.

This was an incredible experience! Beautiful setting in the mountains with a wonderful staff. We felt so taken care off. Not to mention the food was gorgeous and delicious. I would come back in a heart beat and wished I had stayed for more than one night.

Absolute perfect way to spend a honeymoon with your loved one! My wife and I spent our honeymoon in Kyoto this past month, and started our stay at Seryo. Though we were only able to spend two days there, we were treated with the pinnacle of service and relaxation while there. Meals were prepared with perfection, and getting a room with a private onsen (both of us have tattoos) was priceless. I would 1000% recommend this place to anyone. If I was to find any downside to this spot, it is only that its location is a bit harder to access then the rest of Kyoto, so a private taxi/ride would be the only viable option.

My best friend and I visited this ryokan for a day because we wanted to experience a traditional Japanese stay, and it turned out to be a wonderful choice. The property is located in a quiet, beautiful town a bit outside Kyoto. After arriving at Kyoto Station, we took another train to a nearby station and then a 20-minute taxi ride to the ryokan. The drive itself was scenic, and the moment we arrived, the peaceful surroundings of nature and temples immediately put us at ease. The staff were warm and accommodating from the very beginning. My friend loved the matcha tea served during check-in and asked where she could buy it. Since the matcha came from a supplier and wasn’t available for purchase, the staff kindly gave us some in a small bag—for free. It was such a thoughtful gesture and left a great impression. Our room felt a bit dated, but in a charming way. It made the experience feel more authentic, and the room connected to a small but beautifully maintained Japanese garden that we couldn’t stop taking pictures of. We went for a walk around town shortly after arriving, but because it was already close to 5 p.m., most shops and temples were closing. I highly recommend arriving earlier, leaving your luggage at the ryokan, and exploring the area while everything is still open. We visited during the autumn foliage season, and the weather was perfect—we only wish we could have taken more photos to capture it all. Now, the food. The food was absolutely AMAZING. We chose the wagyu sukiyaki kaiseki dinner, and it was truly unforgettable—one of those meals you struggle to find the right words for. Breakfast was just as impressive, with steamed vegetables and dipping sauces, grilled salmon, and beautifully arranged side dishes. Even though we were still full from dinner, we polished everything off. We 100% recommend this ryokan to anyone looking to experience a quieter side of Japan—one without crowds or tourist traps. It’s also a perfect place to bring parents, and we’re already planning to return with ours.

Yelp
I stumbled upon this place while visiting Sanzen-in temple. I missed my chance to try Yuba in Arashiyama because I was lost from finding bamboo groves, and this was my only chance to try before heading to Tokyo next day. Omg...I was so glad that I gave this place a try. I couldn't imagine any vegetarian dish can be this delicious. I was sitting in front of a Koi pond while enjoying the food, and I felt like I've found my enlightenment.
