7 Luxury Trains with Next-Level Dining Cars

"Getting on Japan’s most exclusive sleeper train, the Seven Stars, requires some luck—and we mean it. Aspiring passengers must enter a lottery months in advance for a chance to experience it. But manage to snag a seat, and you’ll be in for a truly outstanding ride. That applies to everything from the 10 beautifully appointed cabin suites to the amenities and the dining car. Called Jupiter, the carriage features a similar decor to the rest of the ride: rich wood paneling, beautifully carved screens, plush floral fabrics for the chairs, and suffused lighting. Once seated, passengers are served seasonal cuisine from the island of Kyushu—the part of Japan the train travels through—crafted by a team of local masters that only works with trusted farmers in the area. The quality of the food is excellent and varied, as dishes are customized to each journey, although you can expect classics like takiawase (an assortment of bite-sized vegetables served with fish, meat, or tofu), and takikomi gohan (seasoned rice cooked with seasonal ingredients, from mushrooms and vegetables to meat and fish). Besides the train, guests also have the opportunity to eat at some of the region’s most sought-after restaurants, from the French La Verveine to the all-Japanese Imoto—one of Kyoto (and Japan)’s best dining spots—where dinner is a full omakase affair of 10 to 12 dishes that change seasonally. Tickets start at $4,330 per person for a two-day trip."

The new owner of the bar made excellent cocktails and was very welcoming. We used Google translate to talk to the long time patrons also at the bar and had a wonderful evening. We did not order any food.

This is a must visit place in Kyoto! The owner is a 77 year old bartender who's super friendly and passionate about making cocktail. The menu is extensive and he's also enjoy making new cocktail. It's about passion of your hobby and making your hobby your life. The vibes and ambience is so relaxing and chilled. Will totally visit when I'm back in Kyoto when he's 78 years old maybe haha.

These types of bars, no matter what country you are in, are so special. Had the pleasure of talking about cocktails with the new owner who was so hospitable.

Please go here, the bar is great and the drinks are well crafted. There was also a homemade Lemon sour that was delicious! The best lemon sour we've had in Japan, she's an amazing bartender!!

The old man definitely knows how to whip up cocktails. He has some of the most fascinating stories and if it’s not busy, spend some time to chat with him over a drink. The bar is cozy.

We discovered this tiny bar on our last night in Kyoto and it was a perfect way to farewell a lovely city. Supported by the magic of Google Translate, we learned the bartender has been making cocktails since 1967 and his skill was apparent in the three drinks we each had. No jiggers in sight - he hand-poured drinks from a huge catalogue. But our proudest moment was teaching him how to make the iconic Melbourne cocktail, the Japanese Slipper (in the photo). We were privileged to drink his first-ever effort and it was perfect. Highly recommended.

Feeling honoured to have visited this bar in one of its last days open. We stumbled upon Seven & Seven on our last night in Kyoto and I am so glad we did. The owner made us feel so welcome from the moment we arrived, loved that we were Irish and we got to hear some wonderful stories. Several locals were there to join in on the conversation - this was a real unique and local experience and I am feeling so fortunate and glad to know we got this visit in our final hours in Japan. Arigatō, soshite taishoku omedetō!
