"Why we love it: A charming European-style inn right in downtown Clayton The Highlights: - The kind of friendly service you only get at small hotels - Complimentary breakfast with farm-fresh eggs and country bacon - An outdoor patio with fire pits and heat lamps for colder weather The Review: Housed in a Tudor Revival–style building from 1926, the Seven Gables Inn sits in the heart of downtown Clayton, surrounded by quaint boutiques, galleries, and restaurants. It stands out among the surrounding buildings, however, for its sloped roofs, large chimney, narrow windows, and decorative half-timbering. Developer Restoration St. Louis recently bought the property and set about revamping the interiors, so now all 32 guest rooms and suites merge historic charm with modern luxuries (think hardwood floors and stately wall coverings complemented by Bissinger’s chocolates, Jonathan Adler bath amenities, and plush robes). Mornings here start with a complimentary breakfast of homemade pastries, farm-fresh eggs, and country bacon—a nice touch, as are the warm cookies at check-in and the evening cocktail reception, held Monday through Thursday. The charming courtyard is the perfect place to enjoy an afternoon break, while the Restaurant at Seven Gables is ideal for when you’re craving a cozy setting and upscale pub fare like chicken pot pie and filet mignon."

I booked the suite in the hotel because we had 3 family members in 1 room. There was a king bed + a sofa bed. (the 17 line)|When we left the hotel early evening I asked Savannah at the front desk to please have housekeeping make up the sofa bed. We returned hours later to discover housekeeping had merely put the linens next to the couch-I guess making up the bed was too difficult. |We opened up the sofa bed, it was a very thin mattress that didn't look very clean. Plus, while looking for an outlet for the lamp on one side of the king bed (there wasn't one anywhere accessible) we also noticed how many layers of dust were on the box spring-right below where our heads would be. Kind of icky. And I'm allergic to dust mites.|Savannah was kind enough to move us to a new room with 2 queen beds (315) which was spacious, clean and nice. |I do appreciate her and Lances's help in trying to make things right. |The hotel is kind of funky in a good way, a great location in Clayton and close to many things. Plus it has a private parking area just across the street from the hotel.|I would consider staying there again, just not in the suite.

Stayed here several times, staff is great. Perfect location, even the food is good. Rooms are outstanding and clean. Beds are comfortable, bathrooms are huge and love the charm. Did I mention the location, very central to lots of restaurants! Love the charm! Will stay here again!

Google
Great, historic hotel located in the middle of everything. The staff were super polite and helpful. I would recommend calling to see if there’s a wedding before staying, the crowd didn’t seem to realize there were other guests there and the late party made for a very early morning. I’ll definitely stay again but I’ll check for events first.

The old building, which might have once possessed some charm, now feels tired. The entryway is peculiar; you step into a narrow hallway where the "desk" is merely a cubby in the wall, resembling a hostess station. The restaurant always plays loud music, reminiscent of a boardwalk atmosphere, yet it is almost always empty. Overall, it has an outdated and disheartening vibe.||Our room was acceptable, with comfortable beds, but it was quite dark, and the fluorescent lighting did little to enhance the ambiance. We didn’t see much value in the “fancy” toilet that had a heated seat and a bidet function, or in the embedded TV in the mirror. The contrast between these upscale features and the plastic cups wrapped in bags felt off. Additionally, I had the impression that the room was somewhat dirty throughout our stay, as I noticed visible dirt along the floorboards, which may or may not have been there before we arrived.

For perspective I am a lifetime Marriott platinum, so I’ve got some experience with hotels. This is the worst hotel in the Marriott portfolio. Our room had an overpowering mildew smell. There was a dehumidifier in our room so I turned it on. We went to dinner and water was running across the floor from the dehumidifier. I told the front desk about the mildew and they acted ignorant of it… but had out a dehumidifier in the room for some reason. The morning we got up to leave the water pressure was so low that water would t come out of the shower. We had to kneel in the bathtub and take a bird bath. Do not stay here.

Google
Positive: This hotel was so unique and charming. All the amenities of a more traditional hotel paired with a local boutique experience. Great location within walking distance of many shops and restaurants. Parking situation was ideal. 5 stars all around. Negative: No

Google
Positive: Staff was attentive. Negative: Bed sheets were dirty with pieces of dirt when covers were pulled back. The buffet was not representative of what I saw in pictures on line prior to making this reservation. The double queen room on line shows a sitting area this is not accurate either.

What a lovely hotel! Jasmine checked us in and she was so friendly. First on property and I loved my room and the history of the hotel. I will definitely come back to your amazing hotel.

Yelp
Beautiful historic hotel in downtown Clayton. The hotel is very conveniently located and the parking is very easy to access right across the street. Plenty of restaurants close by including Starbucks, Crushed Red, and Chipotle around the corner. There was always someone at the front desk if we needed anything and the staff was so friendly and helpful. My only feedback is that several areas looked dated, but that is to be expected in a historic building. We really enjoyed our stay.

Yelp
Tuesday March 14th, Stayed in the Sandberg Phoenix Suite for one night. Pulling up first impression is this is one of those old charm kind of classic hotels. It's not a modern style building but has the modern amenities on the inside. Staff was very friendly through our stay. The benefit of this downtown Clayton location is the one block walk to Oceano, Herbie's, and 3 blocks to about any other Clayton restaurant as well as the easy parking. The hotel is a horseshoe shape construction with an open courtyard in the middle currently housing a very large tent for outside sitting in winter months. They offer complimentary continental breakfast with an added made to order omelette bar in the Sevens restaurant downstairs. As far as amenities that you would expect from a Marriott hotel, they are limited but this is not a hotel you would expect to stay for long periods of time. This place is perfect for sleeping then heading out. No pool or lounge or spa etc BUT the rooms are very comfortable, spacious and have updated restroom. We would stay here longer just for how comfortable the beds were. We didn't have children with us and to me this is definitely an adult hotel. With no more than I would say 30 rooms this is a perfect romantic getaway spot. If you have never experienced a Bidet then you have a few giggles in your future for sure. We stayed for the difference in experience and enjoyed the feeling of exclusivity in the "back in time" building. If walls could talk I bet this place would have a few love tragic stories to share.

Yelp
Visited during Clayton restaurant week. We didn't realize we had Been there before until we were seated. This visit blew the last one out of the water. First course: Fried Brussels were great. I aske for no cheese cause I'm weird like that. Flavor and crispness were wonderful. The did have cold grape tomatoes that I didn't understand but the dish was still great. Second course: Marsala Salmon. I had a really hard time saving half for leftovers. I wanted to eat the whole dish. Salmon was cooked perfectly! Israeli couscous ant topped with Cajun piperade. Not sure what that was, but it was good! Third course: chocolate gooey butter cake. Toolk this home to my husband and he ate it. That means it was good. I loved this meal!

Yelp
Inside out: from the street it is like a fairytale cottage in the middle of the city. I absolutely love it and the first time I got dropped off here I felt like I found the place my introvert eclectic self needed to stay. It's just lovely, The interior has been modernized but that is to be expected. It is clean, organized, and they still kept a lot of the vintage charm. I'm not sure about parking because I've never had a car while I visit, but every ride service hasn't had a hard time getting me or dropping me off. Service: I have a hard time when people say they have bad service places because I always wonder if that person it's just unpleasant. I've never had anything but a positive experience here, even the cleaning crew has been exceptionally sweet, charming, and funny! Both times I have stayed I have interacted with about four housekeepers and I have loved every single one of them and their welcoming warm conversation. When I checked in, the gentleman at the counter was an absolute treasure. He had been dealing with what seemed like an unpleasant phone call but was delightful the moment he talked to us (we are also customer service people, a little grace and kindness bring the same.) Cleanliness: nothing is perfect, and I am a neat freak, so there was a little dust here and there but I did not feel afraid to use anything here like I have been at other hotels. The linen seemed very clean and smelled fresh. I saw a housekeeper working (I used to do housekeeping) and they were properly stripping everything and sanitizing, I felt good about what I saw. Food: they have room service but I never tried it, I went downstairs for their breakfast and I loved it. They had a huge variety and I'm a vegetarian and they had plenty for me to eat. They had fresh coffee, pastry, eggs, bagels, hot foods, and a cozy room to enjoy it in. Overall: I like this place, I am delighted that someone chose to restore an older building and I feel like I'm staying in a fairies secret hideaway in the middle of the hustle. I come here every year and I plan on continuing the tradition as long as they're around.

Yelp
The hotel is in a great location and the room is decent. Stayed here on a business trip because the location was convenient. It's near lots of good restaurants and coffee shops. The hotel itself is a bit lacking in service and amenities. The Wi-Fi was inconsistent and there is no gym on-site. The restaurant is currently shut down for renovations but the bar is open and there is daily breakfast provided. The room itself is actually very nice with comfy beds and a good layout. A mini fridge and coffee maker in the room as well, a very nice bathroom with a stand-up shower, and a good desk to work on. The hotel does have a bit of a rustic charm to it with a nice courtyard in the middle and the hallways look to be the original hallways before the rooms were renovated. It's a decent hotel for a couple of nights but I wouldn't recommend it for a business trip.

Yelp
We absolutely adored our weekend stay at the Seven Gables Inn. They are dog friendly, and we absolutely love any chance we get to travel with our pup. Location is fantastic & walking distance from many great spots in Clayton! The rooms are a nice mix of modern and cozy. We will definitely be repeat customers.

Yelp
The restaurant was really poor. The food quality was like a really bad senior center buffet. Mixed veggies from a frozen bag for sure! They were mushy and watery. And a lava cake that came frozen with cold chocolate sauce on top. Tastes like tin. Like the sauce was from a can. Icky

Yelp
I'm trying to give 3 stars, but I can't even. Supposed to be somewhat luxurious. They (you guys) need to try harder! Everywhere! - 1 lady at breakfast and everything out both mornings. Coffee, eggs, just put more food out. The lady making omelets was giving the A effort but not enough staff. - room clean. Never replaced coffee, creamer, water - I guess my wife told me sheets are only washed every 3rd day - garbages not emptied while staff sitting around. We all work as a team for cleanliness. Make yourselves busy - the final straw. Cold and home after a long day. Saturday 1010 pm bar closed. Called down and "sorry short staffed closed early". That's how you get closed for good in hospitality.

Yelp
On September 1st, my fiancé and I went on a bike ride. We stopped in Clayton and decided to go to Seven Gables and sit on the patio. He had a beer and I had an iced tea. We checked out and I tipped over 20%. I received a phone call and my fiancé asked the waiter to bring him another beer. He asked how much, and the waiter told him $8. He handed the waiter $10 and told him to keep the change. My credit card was charged $21.30, so I called. The same waiter took my call and told me I was charged for two beers and an iced tea. He thought the extra $10 was a tip. He said I would be getting a refund for the one beer, but it has been over a week and the credit was not issued. The venue is in a nice location, but we'll avoid going there in the future.

Yelp
We never received the drinks were still charged for one. Our filets came with 2 sides and we never got them. It also was sirloins. We then waited an extra 26 minutes to leave and still paid for all the items we never received.

Charles M.

Yelp
Poor WiFi and uneven services. Staff not helpful as to internet problems. Room was not cleaned during a three-day stay. Restaurant not yet open after a renovation. But head bartender, Zach, in the hotel bar was a model of professionalism, kindness and courtesy. Wish the rest of the place was up to his obvious standards.

Yelp
Worst hotel stay ever. Paper thin floors, you we're staying on 2nd floor and you can hear every step and noise the 3rd floor makes. The front desk is rarely staffed at all. Called and asked for bathroom to be restocked and came back to see a stack of towels on the floor outside our door. No iron in room. Super small bathroom. The beds are so firm you feel like you're laying on a concrete slab. The parking garage is across the street about 100 yards away. All this for over $250 a night plus another $9 a night for parking. This place is a joke. Do yourself a favor a stay somewhere else. I'd recommend a Super 8 before I'd recommend this place.

Blake E.

Yelp
Starting with the good. The location is great in Clayton and the hotel seems like a bed and breakfast feel. I am a business traveler and was disappointed since this is an "Autograph" property and had much higher expectations. The bed was not comfortable and the pillows were hard as rocks. In addition, they do NOT have a fitness center of any kind. Honestly, I know it's hard for Bonvoy members to go outside of the circle, but I would pass on this hotel and try to get into the Le Meridian or something else.

Goldie M.

Yelp
Pretty place, but bar has gone straight downhill in past six months. Happy Hour starts at 2pm, but no bartender until 3:30 After that? Spotty service Bathroom is "all gender" - separate stalls (yeah), but very weird

Yelp
If you'd like to hear the people above, you making humping rabbit noises, this hotel is for you. I love boutique hotels, but the walls were skinny. The room was bizarre, with a large bathroom but a small bedroom. It was fine for one day, but I won't be going back.

Corrin S.

Yelp
So disappointed in this hotel. Myself along with 30ish coworkers stayed here for an event 10 days ago that was supposed to be paid through my work....Seven Gables made a mistake and charged all of us individually instead of charging our company and has still not refunded us. I spoke with the front desk and they informed me that their sales department never told them to charge the company card and that's why all of us were charged individually instead. Myself, along with other employees and my company have reached out to Seven Gables asking for this to be resolved and it has not. We checked out of this hotel on Wednesday, June 26th, I am writing this review on Saturday, July 6th and Seven Gables told me it MIGHT still take 7+ business days to receive my refund. Every time I have called I keep just getting told "we are working on it" but have not received any solid answers. We were each charged around $700 and it feels like Seven Gables does not know how to process refunds. Ridiculous!

Allie M.

Yelp
Unfortunately it was a horrible experience. We went to dinner and no one sat us down at our table for about 15 minutes and when we sat down we didn't get any service for another 30 minutes. It was New Year's Eve and they ran out of steak at 7:30pm. I will not be coming back here and I do not recommend. They were not prepared at all.

Beth W.

Yelp
Probably the worst hotel. The room was dirty from previous guest. There was only one person working and couldn't get in touch with manager. No one ever cleaned the room. Very unsanitary. And it smelled like mold.

Shalisha T.

Yelp
Threw up after eating an expensive salad. Avoid the food, but nice hotel though! Very clean with nice artwork.

Georgia J.

Yelp
This place is an expensive disaster of a dining experience. Went there for "brunch" with 6 people. The service was awful (the place was not crowded), the food took forever and three dishes never arrived. One person's eggs benedict was okay and the other ordeer of the same thing looked like it was made from hard boiled eggs and did not arrive until everyone else had finished eating.
