Shadows-on-the-Teche

We visited with a large group on a Saturday. The house wasn’t open for viewing, but we were given a short tour of the property and were allowed to poke around in the gardens. The guide explained how rainwater was collected from the gutters and stored in the cistern. He named the people buried in the cemetery and explained their relation to one another. He was very knowledgeable about the boundaries of the plantation and the size and location of slave quarters that are no longer standing. The gardens are very peaceful and enjoyable.

Great tour, learned a lot of history about the location. Love our tour guide he was knowledgeable about the history. He made it very interesting and fun. I’ll post of picture of him below

I toured Shadows on the Teche last month with the Get Away Gals & had the pleasure of learning not only the typical plantation history, but a more complete story including the lives of enslaved peoples lives on site, along with a bit about the native tribes that once were stewards of the area (I especially enjoyed their creation myth!) Adam and Zion(sp?) were very informative and entertained my questions throughout the tour with great patience. And it was an honour to see Zion do such an amazing job giving their first tour!

We really enjoyed this tour. The guide was engaging and we learned both about the family who owned the property and the enslaved who were owned by them. The tour highlighted the realities of living in Louisiana at that time, it didn't sugar-coat anything. It's not a huge house, but it has an interesting history and I would definitely recommend it!

My daughters and I toured the Shadow while on vacation. The young man who guided us was so very knowledgeable and helpful. He spent well over an hour with us. Answered all our questions, told us so much about the Louisiana culture and history of the Shadow. This is a beautiful antebellum style home and very well preserved to include the furnishings. The gardens and the ancient trees are phenomenal. I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes history.

Updated review: I double checked their website and made sure they were doing tours of the house, and oh my goodness, I highly recommend this. This is not your white washed house tour. A couple of the enslaved were actually named. Dionne was the tour guide and she was very thorough and fair in her tour. I was not expecting such a well thought out tour. Prices are reasonable and everyone was friendly. Original Review: I was unaware they were not doing tours of the inside of the home, but I was allowed to walk around the gardens. There were several artists spread out painting scenes from the gardens and outside of the house. There were several information placards in spots throughout the grounds. One spot where there were graves, it was noted that some slaves passed and two girls who were members of the family passed during a hurricane, but only the bodies of the girls were found. Sad that they did not care enough for the enslaved to find them. When I went, they were having a Plein Air Painting Show, Tell and Sell Event where they promote artists who paint the area. Local or those who travel here. Quite lovely. I am so glad I came. They are expecting to open the house for tours again in the spring of 2023.

Me and my husband went for a tour of the house and gardens. The historian was very informative of the people and the history of the Shadows. Would definitely go again just to experience it. We also had the new executive director on the tour with us. He was so nice and friendly to talk to and it was definitely a boost in the experience having him along for the tour.

They walk you throughout the old. Everything is well maintained and almost all original pieces in their. It really shows the history from the 1800's. We loved the tour. Would recommend it to anyone any day. They also have graves from the owner and family off on the side, too.

Beautiful and haunted (allegedly) old historical plantation home with a lot of history nestled in the historic downtown. It's now a museum.

First we wandered the visiting center. It was a great start toward familiarizing ourselves with the characters we were about to hear/learn so much about on our tour. Our guide, Dionne, is SO knowledgable and relatable. She shared honest stories about the people who built and lived in the beautiful house. Stories that included not only the wealthy owners, but the enslaved who made their wealth possible and lives comfortable. The presentation of the true history of Louisiana and our United States is so very important. Invest an hour or two in this lesson. You won't be sorry.

Tour guide was wonderful. It's a beautiful location with lots of history to tell. I definitely recommend.

House and visitor center are worthwhile. The house tour is loaded with questionable content and lots of "drama". The visitor center provides more straight content.

We've just gone on a tour of this beautiful plantation home. The house is very interesting - as are the furnishings; however, the entire staff appeared to be college students with a summer job! They seemed to lack familiarity with their tasks, whether selling tickets or leading a tour. The tour guide (Adam) was personable and very friendly; however, the tour was very inadequate - especially for the price charged. In fact, it definitely was a great disappointment!! At the start of the tour, he announced that the tour would be different from most other plantation home tours - and he was correct!! He provided very little information regarding the home itself, its construction, and its contents. In fact, much of the time during the 'tour' was spent with Adam asking the tour participants how they would feel if THEY experienced such and such as some people did 'back in the day'! Had he just taken a troublesome psychology class during the spring semester??? Although we enjoyed seeing the home, the tour most definitely was not worth the cost.

We enjoyed an interesting and fun tour of this restored plantation house on the river. What a wonderful staff, answering all our questions and providing stories to explain what we were seeing. Highly recommend when in New Iberia LA.

This place is beautiful! It has 90% of all the original furniture. With that being said they are very strict with the not touching anything! We went with the 12:15 tour and awe got the older lady as the tour guide. I felt like she was rushing through the tour and she had zero patience. She did talk but she didn't want to answer any questions. It was the end of her work day so you know how it goes. With that being say make surely to go to the 1:15 tour because while wondering around the gardens after our lightning flash tour. We saw a group of the other tour and it was a louder for enthusiastic lady who was speaking way more and sharing way more then what our tour guide said. However I love old plantations and it was a nice experience. Check it out!

Nice place. I had actually never heard of it before but it was in a book I have from the 1960's so I checked it out. I did not do the house tour, only the gardens. They were a tad small but nice. Im a fan.

Interesting tour. The introduction movie was good. We went in very late Saturday afternoon so there were nobody else. Our tour guide was very nice and knowledgeable. The house was beautiful. Each room was very interesting to look at especially most of the things in there are authentic! The outdoor is beautiful too! Overall this is a most see around here.
