6 Underwater Hotels You Can Stay at Around the World - AFAR

"This innovative “earthscraper” hotel opened its doors in November 2018 in an abandoned quarry in southwestern Shanghai, and it’s an attention-grabbing architectural marvel: Sixteen of its 18 floors sit underground, alongside the quarry’s cliffs, stretching down nearly 300 feet below sea level. The two lowest floors also happen to be located underwater, with views of the hotel’s aquarium, and there are options across several room categories that offer this unique vantage point. In addition to Premium Rooms and Underwater View Suites, there’s a Duplex Suite, which has a living room that looks into the aquarium and an upstairs bedroom with views of the quarry. Also located below the surface is Mr. Fisher, the hotel’s seafood restaurant." - Lyndsey Matthews

This Will Be The Most Visited Country in the World By 2030 | Vogue

"Shanghai, for example, saw a slew of luxury hotels open in 2018. To name a few—Amanyangyun, the Bulgari, the Edition, the Bellagio, the Middle House, and the Shimao Wonderland InterContinental (which, built inside an abandoned rock quarry, has 16 floors underground.)" - Elise Taylor

Quirky stays from California to Cairns - SilverKris

"Notably, I describe the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland hotel as being located within a quarry around 50km from downtown Shanghai, with 18 floors — 16 underground and two underwater." - Yun Jin Loh

The hotel is an architectural wonder and maybe I set my expectations too high as this place has been on my bucket list since it opened 7 years ago but I was hoping for a relaxing stay in an amazing environment but only half of that came true. The place feels a little run down but the worst is the mildew. I was on the top floor and I believe it gets worse as you go down (from others reviews). I am a super light and sensitive sleeper and between the mildew, noisy/rattling dehumidifier in the room and hall light that seemed impossible to turn off I got no sleep and physically felt sick from the mildew. There’s nothing that can be done, it’s a poorly designed building as the whole structure wicks up the moisture from the quarry. I had a butler assigned to me when arriving who was always on hand and very kind (though I didn’t really need one) but on checking out they make you give a 5 stars review on the spot and ply you with a teddy bear gift in return which I find super manipulative and makes half the reviews dishonest. When I refused the teddy bear and instant review I was asked not to write any review at all if it wasn’t five star. Again I found this dishonest and rude and put even more disappointment in the stay. Lastly if anyone from International is reading this, the uniforms are dated, I’ll fitting and shabby. I just feel for a 5 star place it could have been better (but that’s a person who has had no sleep, feeling sick from bad air and being cornered to writing a fake review). The entertainment (quarry light show) was amazing and if you are not expecting much and don’t mind a little mildew then it’s a great hotel.

Spent a night here with the family in a club room on the 11th floor in a twin room. Beds were big as my daughter who is 5 share with my wife and the bathroom had a large bath. The advertisement said a spa bath and it was a large bath but had no jet features. Balcony was large with a great view of the cliffs and activities. ||Club access was also provided with some afternoon tea consisting of cakes and hot food, teas, coffee and soft drinks. Cocktail drinks were also served and had most drinks but not gin, some prosecco and beers. Food was also provided and enough for an evening meal. However, some food choices went very quickly and were.replaced with chicken nuggets and chips which was disappointing considering it's a lounge. Cold beers were also at a premium and only a few cold beers of each option were provided. Breakfast was really good and is on par with most top hotels in Shanghai. ||Activities were really good and from check in to check out we had an action packed 24hrs with a comfortable sleep in between. ||Service was fine for the time we were there but nothing special compared to other hotels in Shanghai. So if you want to stay in a unique place away from the hassle and bussle of Shanghai this is a good option. But if you just want to stay in an amazing hotel Shanghai has plenty of options.

A One-of-a-Kind Experience – Truly Unforgettable Stay!I recently stayed at the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland, and I must say it was an extraordinary experience from start to finish. The hospitality was outstanding — from the moment we arrived, the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Everyone was polite, helpful, and many spoke excellent English, which made communication easy and comfortable. The service was impeccable. Whether it was room service, restaurant staff, or concierge, everything was handled professionally and efficiently. Special thanks to the cleaning team — the rooms were always spotless, fresh, and well-prepared every single day.One of the highlights was the night show, which was not only visually stunning but also beautifully integrated with the unique setting of the hotel. It’s a must-see!The views from the room and around the hotel are simply breathtaking. Being inside a former quarry transformed into a luxury resort is truly surreal — the combination of nature and modern design is spectacular. This hotel is more than just a place to stay — it’s an experience in itself. I highly recommend it for couples, families, or anyone looking for something special and unforgettable.Thank you to the entire team at InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland for making our stay so memorable!

Great Experience - We spent a great weekend there in June 2025 and we will come back. The hotel overall could benefit from a renovation, but it is very well kept and its location and the architecture compensates for that. Fun pool, and activities, small but functional gym. The light show is beautiful. The dinner buffet is a bit expensive, but it offers an incredible food variety, including sushi and breakfast offers great variety of Western food. The aquarium restaurant is nice, set menu average, buffet is much better. Absolutely great place for small children, with a play area and a small amusement park walking distance from the hotel. happy Valley is less than 20Minutes away. I want to commend the great work of Sofia from the concierge, who received us and quickly responded to all of our requests and made our stay truly special.

A masterpiece of architecture and hospitality! Our stay at the Intercontinental Shanghai Wonderland was truly memorable. The hotel stands out for its exceptional design, which is seamlessly integrated into the setting of the former quarry. We were particularly impressed with the fantastic light show in the evening and the relaxing atmosphere that honors the location's history. Our room was not only clean and spacious but also extremely comfortable—the large bed and the balcony made our stay perfect. The view of the show from our room was unbeatable. The service was outstanding, and the staff's friendliness was second to none. The breakfast buffet was a true delight, offering a huge and high-quality selection. There were also great extras like a kids' play area, which we really appreciated. Despite the higher price point, the hotel is worth the investment for the unique experience and first-class service. It's an absolute must for anyone seeking a relaxing and unforgettable holiday!

We had a wonderful stay at this hotel! The facilities were excellent, offering everything we needed for a comfortable experience. The service was also very good, but a special shout-out goes to our housekeeper, Cora. She was incredibly patient, responsive, and proactive in making sure we had everything we needed during our stay. Her attention to detail and care made our experience even more enjoyable. We truly appreciated her efforts and the overall hospitality. Highly recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a pleasant stay!

Was very eager to visit this hotel for its architectural features and breakthroughs. However, was sorely disappointed by its poor maintenance. The rooms and corridors smell dank. The corridors were poorly lit and furnitures were scratched and not well maintained. It definitely does not reflect the standard of an intercontinental hotel. The international management should look into how to improve the maintenance so it won’t let down the amazing effort of the architectural team and all those who poured their heart into making this feat of engineering. I would even say it’s a disgrace to the hotel chain. We paid extra for lounge access. The selection was limited, and half of it were barely edible. The bread was stale, the chips were soggy… the cups in the room were so old. I can’t believe we paid all this money for this.
