6 Underwater Hotels You Can Stay at Around the World - AFAR

"This innovative “earthscraper” hotel opened its doors in November 2018 in an abandoned quarry in southwestern Shanghai, and it’s an attention-grabbing architectural marvel: Sixteen of its 18 floors sit underground, alongside the quarry’s cliffs, stretching down nearly 300 feet below sea level. The two lowest floors also happen to be located underwater, with views of the hotel’s aquarium, and there are options across several room categories that offer this unique vantage point. In addition to Premium Rooms and Underwater View Suites, there’s a Duplex Suite, which has a living room that looks into the aquarium and an upstairs bedroom with views of the quarry. Also located below the surface is Mr. Fisher, the hotel’s seafood restaurant." - Lyndsey Matthews

This Will Be The Most Visited Country in the World By 2030 | Vogue

"Shanghai, for example, saw a slew of luxury hotels open in 2018. To name a few—Amanyangyun, the Bulgari, the Edition, the Bellagio, the Middle House, and the Shimao Wonderland InterContinental (which, built inside an abandoned rock quarry, has 16 floors underground.)" - Elise Taylor

Quirky stays from California to Cairns - SilverKris

"Notably, I describe the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland hotel as being located within a quarry around 50km from downtown Shanghai, with 18 floors — 16 underground and two underwater." - Yun Jin Loh

We absolutely loved our stay at the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland. The rooms were modern, spacious, and thoughtfully designed, with a stunning view that made every moment feel special. The entire property is incredibly scenic, from the sunlit quarry walls to the peaceful water features, it’s unlike any other hotel experience. The night light show was a wonderful bonus and added a magical touch to the atmosphere. Although the hotel is located quite far from the city and major attractions, the tranquility and unique environment made it worth the distance. It’s a perfect place to unwind, relax, and enjoy something extraordinary.Highly recommended for anyone looking for a memorable and one-of-a-kind getaway! 🌟

Wonderful experience and would defintely recomend it to whoever wants a relaxing, quality time with the family. The origin of the hotel from a gold mine to a hotel to the scenary of the waterfall garden, the fountain show and the high-tech light show at night were extraordinary🌟

I will write factual points only below.||Reception was pleasant and water show in reception very good.||As IHG Member there were actually no benefits if you book a promotion offer, this seems to be the case in several hotels.||We paid for an upgrade but actually only benefit was 13th floor but not allowed into executive lounge. ||Band in reception was very poor, very limited atmosphere for such a festive season.||Room was pleasant but nothing fancy basic even we paid for the upgrade only two coffee capsules had to ask for more.||In lobby bar had to wait 12-15 minutes for orange juice, service very basic.||In general stay was OK but nothing festive about the Hotel - Top Management very poor, middle management solved a few things but nothing with emotion or feelings in such a festive period.||Breakfast; would not spend the money nothing special very very average.||Christmas Dinner was Good.|Night show inside hotel was Good.||Overall would not stay again / Hotel needs some investment, not value for money.||IHG Customer Service online was excellent, without their support nothing would happen.

It was an absolute treat to stay here. I would not recommend the voucher with the massage/bath option, which wasn't really worth it (the 15 second video + photos are also offered independently for free by a third party company at the hotel) but breakfast is *definitely* worth it. But the superstar of our trip was Alen Jiang. When we were trying to figure out how to order delivery, she was sent up to our room and was able to help us out. That was so special to us and we were beyond grateful. We would recommend the hotel to absolutely anyone, just don't be like us and stay two nights instead of one!

I had an excellent stay at this newly opened hotel in Shanghai. The hotel features a modern and elegant design, with a clean and comfortable environment. All the facilities are new and well-maintained, giving a strong impression of quality and attention to detail.I would like to give special thanks to bruce and Bill for their kindness and outstanding service. They were professional, friendly, and provided great assistance throughout my stay, which significantly enhanced my overall experience and showed the hotel’s genuine care for its guests.I highly recommend this hotel for its service, environment, and overall stay experience

we had the nicest view from this room! we were offered a discount for an upgrade to Club Intercontinental Ruby with dinner buffet upon checking in. we are very fortunate to stay at this hotel for two nights and had a great time, especially with the aqua view. We have our personal butler, who individually assists us with everything. Due to communication issues, there is some uncertainty while ordering in-room dining meals. But, overall their English was good, and the front desk staff was fantastic! Thank you so much!

Spent a night here with the family in a club room on the 11th floor in a twin room. Beds were big as my daughter who is 5 share with my wife and the bathroom had a large bath. The advertisement said a spa bath and it was a large bath but had no jet features. Balcony was large with a great view of the cliffs and activities. ||Club access was also provided with some afternoon tea consisting of cakes and hot food, teas, coffee and soft drinks. Cocktail drinks were also served and had most drinks but not gin, some prosecco and beers. Food was also provided and enough for an evening meal. However, some food choices went very quickly and were.replaced with chicken nuggets and chips which was disappointing considering it's a lounge. Cold beers were also at a premium and only a few cold beers of each option were provided. Breakfast was really good and is on par with most top hotels in Shanghai. ||Activities were really good and from check in to check out we had an action packed 24hrs with a comfortable sleep in between. ||Service was fine for the time we were there but nothing special compared to other hotels in Shanghai. So if you want to stay in a unique place away from the hassle and bussle of Shanghai this is a good option. But if you just want to stay in an amazing hotel Shanghai has plenty of options.

A masterpiece of architecture and hospitality! Our stay at the Intercontinental Shanghai Wonderland was truly memorable. The hotel stands out for its exceptional design, which is seamlessly integrated into the setting of the former quarry. We were particularly impressed with the fantastic light show in the evening and the relaxing atmosphere that honors the location's history. Our room was not only clean and spacious but also extremely comfortable—the large bed and the balcony made our stay perfect. The view of the show from our room was unbeatable. The service was outstanding, and the staff's friendliness was second to none. The breakfast buffet was a true delight, offering a huge and high-quality selection. There were also great extras like a kids' play area, which we really appreciated. Despite the higher price point, the hotel is worth the investment for the unique experience and first-class service. It's an absolute must for anyone seeking a relaxing and unforgettable holiday!
