The food was good overall, everyone in our party seemed to enjoy their meal. I wasn't wow'd by anything, but nothing was really bad. My clam chowder was pretty good, but the first thing I could taste was herbs instead of clams - not bad, but not what I was expecting for clam chowder. Those that ordered the lobster bisque said it was good. My captains platter wasn't terribly impressive, the bread crumbs on top of the fish were soggy in many places and honestly the fish would have been better without them. It also smelled very fishy when my plate was brought out, and I'm not very sensitive to these smells; the fish flavors ended up being fine. The potato was a little dry while the vegetables were sad and soggy. My colleague's wings and shrimp scampi (he ordered it without tomato sauce) looked very good and he said he enjoyed them (making me regret both my choices 😂). Our server was nice and friendly and took care of us pretty quickly. The atmosphere inside is fun with the nautical theme and the views are very nice, although the door to the deck was locked so I wasn't able to go out for pictures.

This place is great! Our server and the gal who sat us were friendly and attentive. We sat on the patio with our dogs and were offered cold water for both pups. The food and drinks were great, too. My spicy skinny margarita was perfect. I had a salmon sandwich with a salad and my mom had the fish and chips. You can’t beat the view of the lake, either!

I’m new to Burlington and I wanted some clam chowder. I asked a few locals while walking around town and they couldn’t name a place. I looked at the online menu here and figured why not try it. It was a cloudy Saturday afternoon and I was one of two guests in the restaurant. I wasn’t disappointed. Very clean inside. Every spoonful of the chowder was great. I also tried the fried calamari. Definitely different type of plating style with banana peppers and balsamic vinegar dressing but I really enjoyed it and would definitely order both dishes again. My server Lydia and front of house staff were very helpful answering questions about the menu and other places in town to give a try. For the other guests that left bad reviews on the chowder maybe next time speak up that the bowl is missing the hearty ingredients so the staff can correct the mistake or even better try making your own chowder at home. It’s not easy prep. Plus, don’t complain about the price. If it’s too much for you stay home and cook your own food.

Save your hard earned money and pass on this restaurant, simply Not good, edible just edible. The seafood platter bland, the bread crumbs on top added no flavor I had to put salt and pepper on almost all my seafood for it to be palatable. The fried calamari was oily and seeped in oil and the meaty part mushy like it’s been frozen and thawed. If you see my picture, we picked off the bread on the calamari because it was just too drenched in oil. Not worth the money spent on the meal.

Google
Very nice find in Burlington. As we travel with our Aussie Maddie, we sometimes look for a dog-friendly restaurant. We started with the lobster bisque, my wife had the scrod and I had the lobster roll. The food was excellent, the staff was super and the views from the outside deck were beautiful. Great place to eat and relax after walking around Burlington

Google
Oysters were so fresh and meaty. Baked platter was pretty good too. I would recommend the hibiscuis beer they had on special as well as the IPA. Many thanks to Andrei for the service!

Google
My family and I had taken a random vacation to Vermont and this was the first place we went to for food. The waitress, I believe her name was Lydia, was an absolute beautiful soul. My family and I were so impressed by her mannerism and how she joked with us and took our jokes. The food was absolutely delicious! Appetizers and all. And the views looking out towards the lake especially with the sun setting. Absolutely beautiful!

Google
I was honestly pretty disappointed with my experience. We didn't sit out on the deck, so that is on us... probably would have been a better atmosphere. The drinks were meh. The Caesar salad was okay. The calamari was drenched in balsamic vinegar (weird!!) + extremely oily. I also question if the seafood is fresh or frozen. Probably won't go back.

Yelp
I didn't look this restaurant up on Yelp before going. We drove by and thought it looked cute. When I went to add my review I noticed it only has 3.5 stars. I haven't read others reviews yet and I don't know why it has such a low rating! Based on our experience it should have 5 stars! Let's start with the ambiance. We sat outside on the deck overlooking the lake and the beautiful sunset. The inside of the restaurant was just as cute, clean and decorated in a nautical theme. Reminded me of the Jersey shore. Clean bathrooms. Nice bar. The service was great from start to finish. We walked in on. Wednesday night and were seated right away. Our waitress was Kendal ( I think) and she was great. The food was all fresh and delicious! We tried the fried calamari appetizer, which was tender and fried in a light crispy coating. The balsamic drizzle was the perfect compliment and the sautéed peppers were really good as well. I ordered the fish tacos, and they were the best fish tacos I've ever had. The haddock was fried ( menu didn't state that, but I'm not mad) and the Cole slaw and sauce and seasoning and pickled onions were amazing. Worth the 7 hour ride it took me to get there, seriously! My fiancée got the fried fisherman's platter which was also delicious. I tried one of each thing on his plate , a bite of the fried fish, a fried shrimp and a clam strip. I forget how good fried clams are! The ya not something I usually would order but I would go back there and get the fried clam platter! Our daughter got maple salmon that was excellent. The fun drink my fiancée ordered was beautiful and yummy as well.

Danny G.

Yelp
Wonderful food. Mason was a terrific waiter. Great seating with a beautiful sunset view. Returned the 2nd night while in town.

Kristen E.

Yelp
The Shanty was okay overall. I ordered the lobster roll with fries and a cup of the clam chowder soup. It was plenty of food (although I will say $8 for a cup of the soup was a bit on the pricey side). The food was decent, albeit nothing to rant and rave about. I have definitely had better lobster elsewhere and the soup was a bit watery for me. I do appreciate that they used nice lettuce (romaine) on the sandwich. The appeal of this place is the nice views of the water down by Church street, although we ended up there on a rainy day. Service was also okay, not inattentive, but also did not wow me to an extent that I will remember anything extraordinary about eating here.

Mollie G.

Yelp
Our waitress was super friendly. They do have outdoor seating which was nice. The escargot was 10/10. I wish there was more bread with it. The oysters were good and the seafood platter was great however it didn't have that much flavor, just tasted like breadcrumbs.

RJG G.

Yelp
Great location and Megan was amazing!! We were seated upstairs and had the most incredible views of the river. We started with the shrimp cocktail, which arrived with five large pieces of fresh and delicious shrimp. I had the Harvest salad, which included Greens, Roasted Delicata Squash, Herb Goat Cheese, Sunflower Seeds, and apple Cider Balsamic. I added chicken, and they grilled it to perfection. Hubby had the Captain's Fried Combo platter, which included a massive portion of Haddock, Medium Shrimp, Clam Strips, French Fries, and Cole Slaw. We will visit again!

Lee M.

Yelp
Had some oysters, which were good, and a glass of wine, hoping to see sunset but was too early. Side salad dressing was too sweet. Bowl of clam chowder had no clams and one small piece of potato! Sad. So far food was only ok. Have been before and remember being more satisfied with food. Pleasant service and amazing views.

Roadwarriorinheels Z.

Yelp
Unfortunate. The location is great. Our server was fantastic. The food did not deliver. First the mussels. Only a fourth were open. The broth was maybe a third of a cup for the entire dish. Such a waste. Not to mention food cost which gets passed on to everyone. Next up, buffalo shrimp. Mild, extremely mild. Not exactly buffalo style. Overall it's probably a great place to sit and have a drink.

Ken S.

Yelp
Bar service was a bit to be desired but once we got to our table outside we had an amazing afternoon. Food was nice as we had some oysters and calamari. Presentation was on point along with the quality and quantity.

Cindy L.

Yelp
The outdoor seating was beautiful. Service was great. The food was mid. I enjoyed the salmon miso but the Captain's fried combo platter was not my favorite.

Jordan D.

Yelp
Service was great. View was gorgeous. My lobster roll was a 10/10. I was nervous getting the lobster roll as sometimes they can be a bit too fishy tasting. However, this was the perfect lobster roll. It wasn't over saturated with butter and didn't taste fishy at all. The bread it was served on was the perfect accent to the lobster. If you are on the fence about the lobster roll, trust me, go for it! My mom got the fish tacos and had nothing bad to say either. She finished her whole plate. We also had the Shanty Pie - a chocolate mousse pie. It, too, was very delicious! Very glad we took the chance and tried this place out!

Darlene F.

Yelp
I am writing to complain about how I was handled by this Restaurant . Been trying to plan a memorial lunch for my daughter who passed away and last November she loved going there and her son that she lost years ago. Worked there.. Spoke to Connor was trying to finalize everything seems to me they just don't care. He never returned phone calls or returned emails. All I had to do was give him a headcount. He said he would take care of me and now I've been told it can't be handled there.!!! What kind of establishment does someone? ????

Julie T.

Yelp
Great spot fur lunch yesterday. Sat outside / view of the lake. Service friendly - great Bloody Mary , shrimp cocktail and super fresh calamari!

Tyron C.

Yelp
What can I say about Shanty On The Shore... as soon as I walked in I was greeted and seated within a minute. Everyone from the greeter, to host to server was wonderful. The seafood here was not only fresh but DELICIOUS! The oyster was definitely on the sweeter side and was paired perfectly with the cocktail sauce. The lobster was oh so sweet and perfectly prepared. The ambiance was simply breath taking. Props to everyone at Shantys. I will be returning!

Je J.

Yelp
Amazing food couldn't go wrong. I had the lobster roll. My husband had the haddock tacos. Food was amazing quick and friendly.

Catherine O.

Yelp
This is my first time getting back here in over a decade. We used to come here as kids with our family for celebrations. The wait staff was nice. They did mess up our order on one of the items. My broiled haddock was crunched up in a small bowl with underseasoned butter sauce, mac & cheese was a mixture of typical hot mac & cheese, and a cold, macaroni salad sprinkled with breadcrumbs. No more banana cream pie like they used to have, but that may be another story. Unfortunately I won't be returning the next time I'm back home.

Earl G.

Yelp
The view is as fabulous as the meal. Don't pass up on the fresh oysters and haddock. The staff is very service oriented and friendly. Stay have a drink or 3 and enjoy the lake view!

Vanessa L.

Yelp
Went with a gf and we were able to call ahead a few hours before and put ourselves on the priority seating list (no reservations) on a Saturday at 7:30pm. Seated right away no problem. PARKING: there's a decent sized sand lot in the front. Had no trouble finding a spot OUTSIDE: Pretty view of Lake Champlain and the weather was nice & sunny. Tables had umbrellas DRINKS: the bahama mama was recommended by our server and it didn't disappoint! It watered down pretty quick but I didn't mind. FOOD: the clam chowder was so creamy, but great overall. Not too oily like some. The mac and cheese was also a hit. My friend liked the baked scallops. The maple ginger salmon was okay, wasn't a huge fan of how overwhelming the maple was. The Shanty Pie was really big and really sweet. Had to scrape off some whip cream haha Food was okay, more so a place to visit for the ambience!

Dan D.

Yelp
The view of Lake Champlain is excellent, but the food and ambiance felt almost perfunctory. Make sure that you seat on the patio, or it won't be worth it. Having just arrived in Burlington, I chose Shanty on the Shore for its dog-friendly deck and the promise of seafood. I opted for a bowl of chowder. Despite costing $9, it isn't served with bread (I was offered bread for $1 extra). The chowder was good, but served scalding hot, like it had been on the burner undisturbed for too long. They could have at least stirred it before pouring! Judging by the reactions of other diners I was correct not to order something pricier for lunch.

Teressa B.

Yelp
This was a cute restaurant! It has nice views and the food was delicious. The service was very quick!!! I'd recommend getting the clam chowder as a starter!

Sean K.

Yelp
Incredible views, delicious lobster, reasonable priced specials! The staff is friendly and attentive. Variety of food is great but the seafood options are all fantastic. Also, highly recommend the NE Clam Chowder

Abby F.

Yelp
I really liked this place. Their portions are huge, especially the fish and chips, biggest I think I've ever seen. They have great mocktails too. And the scene by the water is beautiful if you sit outside.

Lorraine P.

Yelp
Excellent service, excellent location, excellent food. A little pricey, but you are also paying for the fabulous view. I had the whole main lobster. Fantastic. The lobster roll and Caesar salad were also wonderful. We'll be back on our next trip to Vermont!

Jim G.

Yelp
Well worth a visit! Excellent views, excellent service and good menu. Food was good and service was very attentive and fast. Lots of fried seafood and other options as well. We will return next time in town.

Nelly L.

Yelp
Love the place. Service was good Food was tasty. I would recommend the fish tacos Ambiance is nice except the train is super noisy. Noisy to the point, that you do a grimace.

Claudine R.

Yelp
So... this is our third time here when in Burlington. Party of 4. Service was prompt and friendly as always. Nice ambiance on a very quiet, gloomy, rainy day. First off, we enjoyed the clam chowder, it was good not the best since we've had those every time when we're in Maine. Escargot was good but oh boy, was it drenched in butter?? Like, it was a heart attack waiting to happen. See the photos. Calamari was mediocre. And the broiled scallops had way too much breading, a little over cooked, devoid of flavor. Basically it was so plain. Although my BF enjoyed the fish tacos and my friend enjoyed the cheeseburger.. how can you mess up a cheese burger? For a seafood restaurant, this is sub par. I get it, you're in Vermont but this was not a great seafood restaurant. I honestly would give 2.5 stars for the food.. extra points for the friendly staff.

Carmela M.

Yelp
Had another fabulous dinner at Shanty. This time we branched out beyond the seafood and were not disappointed. The filet mignon topped with compound butter was fabulous. The fried chicken sandwich was ridiculously huge. Great cocktails and location.

Nicole G.

Yelp
There is no doubt that this place has an incredible view. Even though it had been raining the night we had gone, it was still incredible. The food was overall pretty good. It's definitely on the expensive side, but it is seafood after all. I think that the portion sizes were large and were worth the price that they were asking for. My fish tacos were great. I don't think the clam chowder was anything special though. We were seated on the upper level, and if you go, I wouldn't recommend getting a table up there. It was cramped, and with a large party also seated up there with small children, it was nearly impossible to have a conversation.

Robin R.

Yelp
The view is fantastic but the food was meh. Our orders got messed up and what wasn't messed up wasn't much to write home about. But did I mention the view? Best part of the place.

Mel E.

Yelp
Thank you Shanty on the shore for a great welcome to Burlington! This establishment was a beautiful depiction of New England. The food was very yummy and filling. The lobster bisque was my choice, over the clam chowder. The lobster was great and the fries were made to perfection. Escargot with a glass of white wine was the perfect start to the meal. Thanks Tanner, for being a great server! Your recommendations didn't disappoint. Looking forward to returning on my next trip. Enjoy!

Geoff R.

Yelp
Whoa, what a letdown! We came here a year ago and had a great evening, amazing view, excellent service, and very good food. This year we had a very disappointing evening: amazing view, excellent service, and literally bad food. You know what they say: never order the fish on a Monday night. Well, we tried it on a Sunday night and it was just bad. My wife's fried seafood platter was almost okay, although I've had better at Red Lobster(!). But my broiled seafood platter was so completely tasteless that I joked to my wife, "Hey, I've got Covid, I can't taste a thing." She tried and the look on her face said it all..."What is this?". The scallops were a pale white, not a hint of brown, and tasted like...nothing. No flavor. Not good, not bad, not spicy, not spoiled, just literally completely without flavor. How does that happen? Then the same with the haddock - a bleached white with not a hint of flavor, good or bad. Only the shrimp had a smidgen of flavor, and that was so bland as to not really count. Whatever they're doing in that kitchen broiler on a Sunday night, cut it out! it's just a terrible waste of food, and of my $32. So why 2 stars? The view, the service, and the drinks. Not enough to come back for though.

Meg C.

Yelp
Great views of Champlain and killer sunsets make this place worth it. Service was good, food and drinks were okay. We started with the mussels, about half of them were completely sealed, which required more work than we expected, using butter knives which at times resulted in flying mussels. Bloody Mary was not great, didn't finish it. Salad with tuna was generous on the fish but the dressing was really syrupy and sweet. Would come back for views, apps and beer or wine.

Allan A.

Yelp
We returned to Shanty again to enjoy a wonderful meal on our Anniversary during a very cold January evening 2024. We've been to Shanty before and will keep going back there. The food prep and flavor was superb. Portions are large here, but, for us, quantity is never a priority. It's more about the flavor, presentation, quality of prep, time from order to having it on your table and the server's attentiveness to be sure that all is ok just shortly after you began to enjoy your meal. In this visit as in past visits, Shanty gets 5 stars and an A+. The food was delivered very quickly. You'll never have time to look at your watch and ask yourself, where is that meal?! Our meal were delicious and good and hot. The presentation on our plates was well done. Very visually appealing even before you begin to eat! Our server was excellent. Their timing to check on us in that all was ok and did we need anything else, was right on the money! Atmosphere at the Shanty is cozy at night. Low lighting, but, ample enough in case your eyes require more light to see the menu! We've been going to Shanty for many years and will continue to. We've never had a single bad experience there in all that I've mentioned above. To add, Shanty's Lobster Rolls out on their raised deck (with Lake Champlain in full view) during Summer along with your favorite bev is quite an experience to enjoy! Also, I highly recommend their Calamari appetizer. I've had Calamari all over the area and have to say, Shanty makes the best batch I've ever had! The gentle deep frying keeps the Squid very tender, the seasoning, and the mildly hot green peppers along with a tangy dipping sauce make this a really awesome eating experience. 5 Stars all around, yet again! We plan to return next month!

Rick S.

Yelp
Food was a disappointment. Clams were dry clam chowder was just ok but the mussels were good The service was inexperienced but pleasant and the ambiance was lovely on the water overlooking a marina

Jude W.

Yelp
The ambiance was pretty lively, and the server was very responsive. The bowl of chowder was incredibly delicious. The fried shrimp were off the chain, and the fried clams were fantabulous. The fried fish was fresh, but lacked flavor; perhaps using some seasoning salt prior to breading the fish would improve the taste. Aside from the bland fried fish, everything else was pretty good.

Mary Grace A.

Yelp
Great view, great food, and excellent service. This was the first place we ate at when we arrived in Burlington. We sat inside but plenty of outdoor seating available. It was just too hot for us to take advantage of the back deck overlooking Lake Chaplain. We did sit by the window on the main floor which still gave us a great view. They also have an upstairs where the view is even better! For our lunch I started with a cup of their clam chowder which was fantastic. Hubs thought it was really good too and snuck in a couple of big bites. He had the shrimp cocktails which were huge. I stole a shrimp as well. Very fresh and plump and didn't have a sea smell nor taste. We decided to share the captain's platter after seeing the server bring it out to the table next us. Plenty of food to share. We actually still left a lot of food on the plate after stuffing ourselves. We would have taken it to go but we were still walking around and exploring. And seafood does not boast well in the hot sun. Our server was very nice and friendly. She made some great recommendations including the hard apple cider. Overall experience was definitely 5 stars!

Jim U.

Yelp
Pleasant service at the bar. Decent seafood but nothing outstanding for the price. Some better wine by the glass would be nice.

Catherine M.

Yelp
This was an interesting place with an outstanding view! The food was terrific, fish beautifully cooked. All at the table enjoyed their meals. We had a pleasant server. Definitely try to get here to see the wonderful sunset.

Lowell J.

Yelp
We were on vacation from Southern California doing a New England road trip. We spent the night in Burlington. It was a Tuesday night and not many good restaurants were open on Monday or Tuesday. Thankfully Shanty on the Shore was. It's a real neat quasi rustic style "shanty". However it's very clean and appealing. The food was exceptional. We had a lobster roll and fries and some oysters. The server was super nice. New England knows how to make good fries! Everything was great! I tried to OD on lobster rolls on this trip, and the one at the Shanty is very good. Try this place. You won't be disappointed.

Emy P.

Yelp
Enjoyed a Birds Eye harbor view from their 2nd floor dining room on a sultry August day to enjoy the perfect summer seafood lunch with a great server delivering a sumptuous lobster roll for me and grilled shrimp with jasmine rice for my guest. The kicker was that it is one of the few businesses on the waterfront with their own parking lot taking the guesswork out the logistics! Shore score!! Highly recommend this spot!

F L.

Yelp
Great food! Baked fish and Shrimp Scampi were delicious. Great decor and very clean. We went in the winter and sat inside but enjoyed the view of Lake Champlain. I look forward to sitting in the patio when it's warmer. Great service as well!

Donna M.

Yelp
We ordered the seafood platter. For $32, we were provided with cold food with a ton of breaded crumbles on top. I received two pieces of shrimp, a cold, a very small piece of fish, and three scallops, whoopie! We ordered the mac & cheese with a side of broccoli. Mac & cheese was bland and cold. However, broccoli was pretty seasoned and tasteful. Service...humm...not so good. That's probably why my food was cold, if you know what I mean. ....and they weren't busy. Ambiance.. was great. I loved looking at the water.

Bea W.

Yelp
Great location and good that now more accessible for elderly. Known for its seafood and lobster rolls but I wouldn't bother with the fish tacos (over fried chunk of unknown white fish, squirted in some sauce in raw burrito-like wraps). Service was prompt and popular spot to enjoy the view.

Phong N.

Yelp
It's a beautifully charming spot in the shores of Lake Champlain in Burlington. Service was great and solid New England food. Fish and chips and lobstah rolls. Fun place and serves solid food. Not cheap but fair. Go here early or late unless you have a reservation. High season can be busy.

Paulette C.

Yelp
Spent the last night of eating lobster for 8 days in a row. My friend and I learned to order the BIGGEST lobster and share it! Each of us gets a claw and the tail is split vertically so we each get half. It's the perfect amount, especially with a side salad and fries! The view and food were DELICIOUS!

Eric A.

Yelp
Service is friendly. A little slow today but no complaints about it. Oysters were fresh. The only down side is they weren't really shucked very well and the oysters weren't separated from the shell. Tasted really good tho. I wanna try more things here. Beautiful scenery

Chris P.

Yelp
Great seafood place & friendly service. Love the shrimp scampi, large tender & sweep shrimp. Enjoyed the mussels, fresh and has some slight booze-kick. Delightful key lime pie for dessert, matched with a very hot coffee. Perfect place to enjoy lunch and dinner.

Javed S.

Yelp
Clam chowder was homemade and perfectly spiced. Great vista from the deck outside. Food is delicious and great homemade mac and cheese.

Pauline L.

Yelp
This is a nice place to visit whether you're alone, a couple, with friends or a family. The staff is friendly and very attentive. The view of Lake Champlain? What's not to love? We had the lobster roll. At $22, it may have seemed a bit pricey, but it wasn't chopped up lobster salad with filler. They were serving large pieces of lobster tail and claws. I also loved the soup and I'm not usually the biggest fan of clam chowder. According to the menu, the soup is recommended by a food critic from The Boston Globe, who definitely got it right! The cute little bread served with the soup was as hard as a rock, but I'm not big on eating bread with my soup, so no worries. Skip the little bread. Eat everything else! Enjoy the view!

Tom L.

Yelp
I hadn't been to the Shanty in quite a few years and now I remember why. Most tables around us arrived well after we did and were served dinner before us. We had to ask for status. 2 of the dinners were hot, 3 were warm and mine was pretty close to cold. The escargot was perfect but my meal was not. Most of the fish was well over cooked for everyone. Salads arrived with the meal and not before. At least our waitress was wonderful. Sorry Shanty, unless I forget again, I will not be returning.
