Where to Stay in Baton Rouge, Louisiana | Condé Nast Traveler

"Referenced as a central downtown cultural hub within walking distance of hotels like Origin and the Watermark, the Shaw Center for the Arts anchors the riverfront arts corridor and nearby dining and museum options." - Jessica Chapel

My daughter's wedding and reception was on the 4th Floor, River Terrace and it was amazing. The venue assigned a person (how I wish I could remember her name), and she was fantastic. My daughter's needs were met in lightning speed, they definitely know what they are doing. The bridal suite area was perfect for our needs. The seating outside was fantastic and well thought out, as everyone wanted to come see the bride and the suite quickly got a little crowded! The venue itself was fantastic. A quick, strong, rain storm came through, and they were so fast to take matters under control, the reception didn't even miss a beat! A huge thank you to everyone at the venue for making my daughter's night magical!

I would so l easily give this place 5 Stars with one exception. In the Manship Theater there a handful of bad seats. 99% of the rest are great! With the exception of those extremely few bad seats. You can see and hear the performances from various angles and you will not be disappointed. I accept responsibility for the seat I selected, because other seats were available at the time. I chose a place in the balcony, furthest toward the end, closest to the stage. Thinking this would put me at a place where I could watch the performance from a great angle. Unfortunately. There are stage lights that block 1/2 to 2/3rds of the view from that spot. If it weren’t for the stage lights at that particular location, the view would be fantastic. Again, it was my choice. Next time, I’ll simply avoid one any those seats next time. There’s only 4 such seats in the arena. So again, all the rest are great. I’ve been to previous shows there and have been greatly satisfied with the seating. My advice to the Manship Theater is to either remove those 4 seats and just have an open space there. Or perhaps rearrange the stage lights in such a way as to not block the view to the stage from that particular location. With that said. The atmosphere, service, access to seating, staff, bartenders, cleanliness and of course the quality of the shows there are 5 Star all year long. There’s plenty of parking right next door. The facility is also conveniently located near restaurants, shops, lounges as well as the eternally scenic Mississippi River. It’s also directly across from the Watermark Hotel. And nearby other 5 star Hotels. My personal favorite is the Watermark. One of the very best hotels in the South.

We visited the museum store and the museum itself at the Shaw center for the Arts. Both were wonderful! The art is a real tribute to Louisiana and its artists. The format of the museum does the same, with cozy living room furniture placed in the center of almost every room to create a warm, hospitable atmosphere.

I've visited 3 times so far. For art, food, music and finally, as the venue for my wedding. Beautiful with lots of fun things to do and see. Not to be missed.

Definitely a place everyone in BR visits for the view of the river and the restaurants and museum. Recommended place for any tourist and even occasional famous people filming in Louisiana will go to.

Yelp
Notes: 1) been here a few times Pros: 1) venue looks nice and clean 2) security is helpful 3) parking in surrounding area is good 4) ambiance is great Cons: 1) potential overlaps of multiple events Rating: 5/5 The event area is really nice. Everything is clean and well maintained. The staff are quick with cleaning and making sure things are good. The view and ambiance is immaculate. It also is nice to have security on location that locks up and makes sure things are good. I don't know the background information for the staff and such but what I could see was nice. The only downside I can see is if there are multiple events in the area which can lead to music overlap and potential confusion and such. Great center for events, art events, and also has tsunami here too.

Yelp
This is such a weird building. I guess it's mostly an office building but we were there to tour an event space...that was much to small for our group. I know Tsunami (sushi restaurant) is on the top floor. I guess it's just not the sort of mixed use space industrial space that you expect to find in Baton Rouge. Mostly it leaves me confused.

Yelp
This year makes the second time I've used the shaw center to hold my Red pump vrs Blue sneaker mixer to raise awareness for HIV and PREP. The staff is extremely hands-on and prompt, super professional and patient! Everything was laid out to perfection and they catered to my every wish. My event was amazing thanks to the awesome ppl at the shaw center. I recommend the shaw center for weddings, parties and extravagant events.

Yelp
I've heard a lot of really nice things about this facility & I was glad when given a chance to visit for a "formal" occasion. I attended for a PM wedding & I wasn't disappointed. While I understand most of my experience was a direct result of the wedding I was attending, there were some elements that were a direct result of The Shaw Center. The view of the river and was magnificent. Walking up to the facility there was a beautiful timed water fountain (of sorts). The wait staff was fantastic. The bathroom was very clean. The area in which we were occupying was spacious & nicely decorated. Only one downfall that I could speak of... this was the makeshift dance floor. Not good for ladies wearing high heels. My heels kept landing in between the tiles, can you say dangerous; I managed to NOT fall while cutting a rug though. Fun & Elegant!!!

Yelp
We came to the Shaw Center for Performing Arts to see a Christmas play with our two daughters. The theatre is small and I think that's great. It makes it a nice, cozy setting to see a show. We sat in the back row, against the back wall on the floor level. My reason for a four star review has to do with the audio. The performers either had microphones or there were microphones on the stage, but from time to time you could not here the performers and other times they were too loud and blaring. And also there was some feed back on occasion. I don't know if this is a regular problem but it was unappealing. The seating is good. We have sat in different spots at different visits and it seems that you can see the stage well from all different angles. The prices will always very from performance to performance but we have never really complained about high prices on tickets. I was really pleased to see the full bar available (even during a children's performance). They have wine, mixers, beer, soft drinks, water, etc. This is a great place to take a date for a show and then dinner and drinks at one of the nearby restaurants and bars.

Yelp
Overall, you should go and look at whatever galleries and exhibits they have open. I was disappointed that the construction meant much of the building was off limits, but what I was able to see was nice. I went with a friend one weekend and we went and walked around downtown before remembering that the Shaw Center has museums to go see. We went to go the exhibits at the LSU Museum of Art. If you are a student, be sure to bring your id, as students get free admission, though regular admission is only $5. They had some really interesting things on display. I particularly enjoyed the Chinese jade sculptures and artifacts with the explanations posted. They also have several different types art to enjoy. They have photography, paintings, dresses, and even some beautiful antique furniture.

Yelp
Great place to see art in Baton Rouge. The LSU museum is on the 4th floor and is great to see a selection of local and permanent collections. Tsunami on the top floor has great view of the Mississippi.

Yelp
Visited the Shaw Center Theater for a concert. Was pleased to find such a top rate facility! The theater felt small for the amount of people it could hold and there wasn't a bad seat in the house. The sound is great, seats are comfortable, and staff was friendly. Can't wait to see more concerts and events here.

Yelp
We used the Shaw Center for our wedding reception on April 3rd. The coordinator leading up to the event was a joy to work with and was very helpful in helping us prepare for our event. Post event she was also very communicative regarding some questions and concerns that we had. Beautiful venue, helpful staff. Good price.

Yelp
The rooftop scene on a recent Friday night reminded me of Santa Monica Place rooftop. Only the DJ wasn't Chris Douridas, sigh. Anyway, we dug the breeze, the view of the river and downtown, the music, and the idea of coming back for drinks sometime.

Yelp
As a wedding coordinator, the Shaw Center was great to work with. Shaw's Event Coordinators Priscilla & Lindsey were super easy to work with, very informational and beyond helpful! The Shaw Center's 4th floor River Terrace made for an impressive wedding reception.
