7 ways to experience Canberra - SilverKris

"About 30 km north of Canberra, I enjoyed award-winning cool-climate wines at Shaw Wines vineyard, a great base for sampling the region’s whites and reds." - SilverKris

The new Canberra drinking experience - SilverKris

"A dramatic new cellar-door facility set on a large merino farm, its concrete-and-glass architecture resembles a modern gallery and anchors a working estate planted with vines since the late 1990s; the winery focuses mainly on Shiraz and Riesling and also produces a Cabernet Sauvignon noted for eucalyptus-like notes." - Kendall Hill

Beautiful venue and great atmosphere. On our arrival, a rude young blonde woman, possibly the maître d did not make us feel welcome. She had no manners either. Our waitress Izzy was fantastic, attentive and had an excellent knowledge of the menu The food was lovely and we enjoyed ourselves for my birthday lunch.

Nestled beside rolling vines in Murrumbateman, Shaw Estate’s Mediterranean-inspired restaurant offers a refined yet relaxed escape from everyday life. The airy, sunlit pavilion—complete with terracotta lighting, warm textures, and sweeping vineyard views—frames an unforgettable meal . The zucchini flowers were a delicate, pumpkin-cream‑filled delight, while the octopus—or squid—with chorizo and potato struck the perfect balance of smoky, savory charm . With its handcrafted culinary touches and elegant ambiance, this is a destination well worth lingering over, especially when paired with a glass of Shaw wine (or gin and tonic)

Three of us had a meal together on the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month, which is the traditional Chinese Ghost Festival (Yulan Festival). The restaurant had a great atmosphere, and we ordered a vegetarian set menu along with another set menu for 79 yuan. The flavors were excellent and surprisingly delightful.

We went to Shaw estate for a wine tasting and lunch. The venue is new and beautiful, multiple gas fireplaces, a nice view over a lake etc. The wine tasting was good and we purchased some great wines. All the staff were nice. Lunch was also really good, the bread, arancini, zucchini flowers and pasta were all amazing and we would 100% get them again. However, the premium $70 steak (which was requested and cooked medium rare) had a horrible, overwhelming burnt char flavour to it and was extremely chewy, especially for medium rare. Almost inedible. So avoid the steak you will have a great time.

We came here for a farewell dinner and had the banquet along with the truffle & brie on raisin toast and the truffle wagyu beef carpaccio. The food was excellent (the raisin toast was a real standout, and the tiramisu for dessert was incredible). Service was attentive, and the atmosphere was beautiful – the venue itself is stunning. Overall, a fantastic experience and highly recommended.

Outstanding service, really great food, and wonderful location. The restaurant is a lovely open building overlooking the vines and the disappearing afternoon sun. We tried both the delicious Shaw Shiraz and Tempranillo. I would highly recommend.the Shaw Wines restaurant.

Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3.6/5.0) Shaw Estate in Canberra offers a pleasant and approachable winery experience, especially for those exploring the region’s cool-climate wines. The estate is spacious and well-kept, giving it a relaxed, polished feel without being too formal. Their wines are solid overall, with some standout whites and easy-drinking reds, though not every bottle leaves a strong impression. The tasting room staff are friendly and informative, making the visit smooth and enjoyable. While the setting is attractive, it doesn’t quite deliver the same “wow” factor as some of the area’s more boutique wineries. Still, Shaw Estate remains a reliable and enjoyable stop for a laid-back tasting.

Yelp
Shaw Wines is a lovely estate, the cellar door a substantial modern space and friendly staff. The baclony area over looking the vineyard and their dam, a great spot for a tipple on a sunny afternoon. Or, you can sit inside at one of their tables or lounges by the fire, still with a great view. Shaw have a private tasting room and sell wine merchandise and to take home. Their tastings are free with a good mix of whites, red and also offer tastings of their premium wines which are very savoury. Their core range Shiras was the pick, it was very rich and fruit driven, plums and winter berries. This went down a treat with their charcuterie and cheese platter. There is also a rustic restaurant on side, called Olleyville, serving small, medium sized plates, shared meals and pizzas. We enjoyed our visit to Shaw and it is well worth a visit to this winery. One of the nicest outlooks and wineries.
