Shumari Wildlife Reserve is a wonderful place for nature and wildlife lovers located in eastern Jordan. Established in 1975 by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature, it is Jordan’s first natural reserve. Covering about 22 square kilometers, the reserve features diverse landscapes, including desert valleys and basalt-covered plains.
Shumari is home to many rare and endangered animals, such as the Arabian oryx, which was successfully reintroduced here after disappearing from the wild in Jordan. You can also find various species of gazelles, ostriches, wild donkeys, and over 190 plant species, making it a perfect spot for wildlife watching and photography.
Visitors can enjoy “oryx safaris” to see animals in their natural habitat and learn about the unique biodiversity at the visitor center. The reserve is open daily from 8 AM to 5 PM, offering a peaceful and educational experience surrounded by beautiful desert scenery.
