The Best Hotels in Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada - AFAR

"If a casual cottage stay is on your agenda, consider Shaw’s Hotel, operated by the same family for four generations. It all started in 1860, when John Shaw opened the inn on his pioneer farm; 145 years later, the hotel was designated a National Historic Site. The main building, with its white clapboard siding and red mansard roof, holds 14 rooms and suites outfitted with antiques. Guests can also choose from 15 chalets with full kitchens and large decks, as well as 10 traditional cottages with picturesque views. In the on-site restaurant, expect chowder, mussels, scallops, lobster, and other island treats. From the expansive grounds, it’s a five-minute walk to Brackley Beach in P.E.I. National Park, which has one of the longest dune systems in the Western Hemisphere." - Barbara Peck

Shaw’s Hotel is an institution dating back to the 1860’s. Hailed as one of the earliest inn/resorts in the island. Perhaps 30 cottages of various sizes for rent (1-4 br), or a stay in their inn, that has been enlarged in fits and starts from its beginning. In the inn the rooms are comfortable but a bit worn. The bathrooms strictly functional and tight. But - considering the age and the history of the place - completely understandable. What’s special about Shaw’s would either be their beach access (the beach is quite nice), their friendly staff, a sizable dining room with an excellent menu for the region. Bike friendly.

Recently stayed 5 nights and used Shaw's as a centrally located place to explore PEI. We stayed in the historic hotel but I would like to try one of the cottages next time. The good: Accommodating staff, good pillows, free use of kayaks, walking distance to a great beach, and the included breakfast was FABULOUS, served in a beautiful room with panoramic views. Improvement: the wifi is very spotty but I think that's an island problem, not necessarily this place. The rooms are old - well, it's an historic place, but still... Also, we stayed 5 nights and though we got clean towels daily the bedding was never changed. Maybe they would have had I requested. Having said this, I would stay there again on my next trip to PEI. We enjoyed the overall experience.

We spent two nights at Shaw's hotel in the second floor suite. Our family included 4 adults and 2 children. We appreciated the extra space, as our room included two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a small living room with TV. One room had an air conditioning unit and we had another unit in the main hallway. They had a good sized mini fridge in the living room. The hospitality of the office staff was appreciated. Easton was very helpful and provided us with anything we needed. Extra towels were provided any time, and they had free ice available for all guests. Breakfast was included with the room. When you arrive for breakfast the staff meets you by name and you can immediately grab food and drinks from the buffet. We enjoyed the yogurt and granola, croissants, and cinnamon buns. You can choose from two breakfast specials daily. Our options were a frittata or pancakes on day one and french toast or fried eggs and bacon on day two. We were grateful to have Liam as our server both mornings - he was wonderful and we felt we got to know him well. We spent a lot of our time at Shaw's Beach. Our kids wanted to go there during any downtime. It wasn't busy, and there was lots of space to explore.

Beautiful traditionally maintained place , great service. We stayed in a cottage for two nights. The staff were splendid, the servers were extraordinary- one of the last few gems of family owned and operated accommodation! Will definitely be back.

A colleague and I are running our 3rd annual Sea, Sand & Soul Fitness Getaway at Shaw’s this September. It’s perfect for us because the cottages are lovely, Robbie, Jeannie, Easton and all the other staff are relaxed, helpful and kind. We all rave about the food. If you like to walk or bike, there is a great trail just a few minutes walk away that runs oceanside. Take it to FinFolk or famous Richard’s for a lobster roll for lunch. It’s a 15 minute bike ride to The Dunes cafe and gallery. If you’re there in the high season they bring in well known local musicians and cover charge looks really reasonable. Other thoughtful things…beach towels and beach chairs with a carry strap are stored near the trail so you can pick them up on your way. Very quiet and peaceful and no TVs which could be a plus or minus.

Have been staying here every year for many years now. This place is fantastic. Quiet and quaint. Great for family vacations or romantic couple getaway. Close to the beach!

Location was perfect. Beautiful tree lined path to a spectacular beach. The cottage was perfect and a peaceful walk to the main building. Food was delicious. Every conversation that I had with the staff was considerate and kind. I would recommend this to anyone who appreciates beauty and just wants a place to slow down and soak it all in.

Beautiful property!!! This Inn has so much history, owned and run by the Shaw family for generations, they offer rooms in the original hotel building as well as cottages. The property is located between a bay on one side and Brackley Beach on the other (which is a short beautiful walk) and has stunning views. Highly recommend!!!
