The Best Hotels in Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada - AFAR

"Operated by the same family for generations since its 1860 founding and designated a National Historic Site, this property features a white clapboard main building with a red mansard roof and 14 antique-filled rooms and suites, plus 15 chalets with full kitchens and 10 traditional cottages. The on-site restaurant serves island fare—chowder, mussels, scallops, lobster—and the grounds are a five-minute walk to Brackley Beach and the extensive dune systems of the nearby national park." - Barbara Peck

For a last minute impromptu trip, this place was fantastic! Reasonable price very vintage charm! Reminded me of being home at either one of my grandparents places! Perfect out of the way location for my son and I considering he needs a quiet space as a light sleeper. We stayed on the hotel and it was lovely and the beds super comfortable, I melted in mine! Breakfast was included (would have cost around $22 and change, but for a simple coffee scrambled eggs sausage and toast the homemade strawberry rhubarb jam made me feel right at home! (There were other options but that was perfect for me!) Staff were very sweet and accommodating Sitting on the porch at night with the crickets chirping gave such an old time feel. My son and I highly recommend this place! This place was built in 1860, so if you are into old school charm & dated decor (still very clean) this place is excellent and exactly what I like! We came to PEI last year and were disappointed in our accommodations so this place made up for it this year!

We rented a cabin and it was a central place to explore the island from. The view was lovely, extremely quiet and very relaxing. The facilities and grounds were well kept and we enjoyed the history of the place. The breakfast was very good and they did an amazing job catering to my gluten allergy. Best of all everyone was super friendly.

This is a jewel and so many people don't know about. Family run. Super friendly. Amazing private wooded cottages with the best beach in PEI. Minutes walk from the spacious cottages. We go here every year and love it. The bike trail along the Dunes is a perfect 10 minute ride to go Richards wharf for lunch - or eat at their Bistro. The Dunes gallery is also a 10 minute bike ride. This is a vintage PEI experience.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Shaw's. Our room was big, with a very nice living room attached. Though the rooms could use updating, we like it as is. The breakfast was delicious. The staff were friendly and helpful. We took their kayaks out onto the bay after dinner. The scenery from the land and from the bay is beautiful.

We had a quiet and relaxing week at Shaws. Our little cottage was perfect for us. We enjoyed the short walk to the beach, the food in the dining room and the friendly staff. The location was fantastic and we took many road trips to explore the island. And the sunsets were spectacular every night.

We stayed in cottage 15 much bigger then expected which was a huge bonus. Full kitchen and bath plus 2 bedrooms. Price was fantastic and the beach was a short walk. They have kayaks and canoes you can use for free. The staff was very nice, and the food was amazing. We will be back to this little slice of paradise next year. Highly recommend a must stay!

During our road trip to PEI we stayed at this hotel as my husband was intrigued with staying at a historic inn. It is situated on a large property and there are many places to sit and enjoy it. It is within walking distance of Brackley Beach and we found all of the staff very friendly and helpful. My reason for just a 3 rating is the fact that we found both the mattress and sofa in our room very uncomfortable. The mattress clearly needs to be replaced as does the sofa. Our sleep was not restful and when we sat on the sofa, it sank. Although the decor was in keeping with an old inn, certain modern upgrades are possible and should be incorporated. This hotel was the only hotel in 12 that we stayed at throughout our trip that did not even have a luggage rack for our suitcases. We had to improvise. |We had a very pleasant dinner here and have no complaints about that. In the morning, our room rate included a "hot breakfast". We were offered pancakes or eggs benedict. Thankfully, I opted for the pancakes although I had to ask for maple syrup. My husband chose the "eggs" benedict. He received one poached egg on half an English muffin. No potatoes, no salad or fruit, just one egg on half a muffin. It arrived on a big plate which made the presentation look even worse. Given all of this, the strictest cancellation policy we encountered and the fact that Charlottetown is less than half an hour away, I would have opted for a second night in Charlottetown.

Well run family owned hotel with attentive hospitality, delightful cabin with and delicious meals served in the main lodge. Ocean swim at Brackley Beach was epic! Loved our two day stay at Shaws. A true Maritime gem!
