14 Best Things to Do in Abu Dhabi | Condé Nast Traveler

"Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, one of the world's largest, is an Abu Dhabi must-see. Completed in 2007, it can fit 40,000 visitors and worshippers into a space the size of four football fields. But it's not only the size that's impressive. The architecture is a shining culmination of cross-cultural influences: The architects were Emirati, Italian, and British, bringing together design elements from Turkey, Morocco, Pakistan, Egypt, and beyond. The details here are grand, from the reflective pools to the 82 white marble domes, 1,096 exterior columns, and 24-carat gold Swarovski crystal chandeliers, all creating a transcendental experience." - Jenna Scatena

A Grand and Unforgettable Experience. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It’s incredibly beautiful, grand, and massive — a true architectural masterpiece. The white marble, detailed carvings, elegant domes, and sparkling chandeliers create a peaceful yet majestic atmosphere that leaves a lasting impression. Whether you visit during the day or at night, the mosque is absolutely stunning. It’s open to all and very well organized, with respectful guidance. A must-see in Abu Dhabi — truly one of the most magnificent mosques in the world.

Visited in February 2025 with family. Absolutely stunning mosque with: - Sufficient prayer space - Separate prayer space for women - Very clean with free water bottles for visitors - Aircon inside the mosque - Friendly staff - Parking available on site - Shopping centre located on site Please note booking is needed in advance and tickets are free. The mosque is generally very busy and a lot of walking is required. There are also security checks on arrival. Suitable attire should be worn when visiting. A very rewarding experience and recommend visiting.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is undeniably stunning from the outside—its architecture is truly breathtaking. However, our visit could have been better. We were unaware that tickets were required to enter, and the staff we encountered were not as helpful or friendly as we had hoped. Unfortunately, this impacted our overall experience, though the beauty of the mosque itself is still worth seeing.

One of the most impressive buildings I ever visited. We got tickets online, for free. You just need to have approximate time of visit. Dress code is really strict, specially for ladies, so come prepared, or be ready to shop at the mall (to enter the mosque, you go through it). Well worth the visit.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is truly impressive and worth a visit. Before entering, you can spend some time in the air-conditioned underground mall, which also has a food court. Tickets are free and can be obtained online or on location. Keep in mind that you need to be covered appropriately to enter. Outside, there is relatively little to see – mainly one walking path and the stunning main hall. Around 1 to 1.5 hours is enough to enjoy everything comfortably.

Visiting the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a truly unforgettable experience. The architecture is breathtaking — pure white marble, intricate details, golden accents, and a serene, majestic atmosphere. Even in the heat, the space feels calm and peaceful. Everything is well-organized: clean facilities, spacious areas, helpful staff, and good air conditioning. It’s a must-visit spot, regardless of your religion — it’s a place of beauty, culture, and deep respect. And yes, it’s also an amazing location for stunning photos, especially around sunset.

Visiting the Grand Mosque was a truly cultural, unique, and memorable experience. The mosque itself is strikingly grand and beautiful, with a vast central courtyard that remains completely vacant — perfect for stunning photos, as visitors can only walk around the perimeter. At night, the lighting adds an ethereal touch, making it absolutely worth visiting in the late afternoon or early evening. We were lucky to arrive just in time for one of the hourly guided tours, which offered deeper insight and also helped us avoid the bulk of the crowds. We even got to hear prayers echoing through the mosque, which added to the serenity and atmosphere of the visit. However, be very mindful of the dress code, especially for women. Although we wore long-sleeved clothing that covered wrists and ankles, I was flagged because my shirt was slightly see-through and had to buy a relatively expensive hoodie to cover up. Even my friend’s abaya — a traditional robe specifically designed for mosque visits — was deemed too sheer. All in all, it was a beautiful and enriching experience. Just be sure to come prepared with appropriate clothing and a proper head covering to avoid any issues on entry.

A Breathtaking Masterpiece – Spiritually and Architecturally Inspiring Visiting the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was a truly humbling and unforgettable experience. Built under the vision of Sheikh Zayed, who is also laid to rest here, the mosque beautifully blends spiritual significance with architectural brilliance. The sheer scale and elegance are breathtaking — with 82 domes, over 1,000 columns, 24-carat-gold gilded chandeliers, and the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet, every detail reflects incredible craftsmanship and devotion. One of the most special aspects is the mosque’s open-door policy, welcoming people of all backgrounds — from solo travelers and families to groups and worshippers — to experience its peaceful atmosphere and gain insight into the UAE’s culture of tolerance and open dialogue. Expert guides are available and offer fascinating insights, pointing out intricate details like the gold-leaf calligraphy that adorns the interiors of the domes — something you might easily miss on your own. Entry is free, and I highly recommend planning a second visit at sunset or after dark. Watching the mosque light up under the night sky adds an entirely new level of majesty — it’s absolutely magical. There is a dress code, but it’s quite manageable. Many visitors bring their own modest clothing that meets the guidelines — an abaya is not always necessary if you dress respectfully. This is more than just a religious site — it's a place of serenity, learning, and unity, and a must-visit when in Abu Dhabi. Don’t miss it.
