Beth was an amazing host — warm, welcoming, and attentive. The pool is absolutely stunning and hands-down the biggest feature of the house. Just note that it’s not heated until late May. Shelter Island itself is a peaceful escape from reality — serene, charming, and the perfect place to unwind. The only issue we had was with the bed — there was something tiny in the sheets (maybe lint or particles) that made it a bit hard to sleep. But overall, we had a fantastic stay and would absolutely come back again.

Our family booked 3 rooms here and everyone was pleased with their rooms and excellent service. Each room is unique with different features. |The only complaint was that coffee and tea weren’t available until 8 am but a lovely deck to enjoy it.|The pool area has lots of chairs and lounges.

Shelter Island House is a wonderful establishment. The resort was conveniently located. Sunset Beach just minutes away walking distance. The resort's grounds very welcoming. The pool area was very relaxing. We also enjoyed the outdoor setting areas, especially with a nice glass of wine! Our room was clean and very comfortable. However, I should say the back outdoor lights kept me up a good part of the night. Maybe the next time I would bring eye mask covers. On the other hand, the staff was very attentive, accommodating, and friendly. The breakfast was light but pleasant. My husband and I would definitely return.

I’m almost ashamed to say that although I have lived most of my life on Long Island I had never visited Shelter Island before. To celebrate my birthday we went to Shelter Island for three days and two nights. Having read reviews for the Shelter Island House - it sounded like it was exactly what we were looking for, and we were not disappointed.|||| It is very well kept and our king sized room was nicely appointed and very clean and up to date. The bed was extremely comfortable. Suzanne the owner was welcoming and so nice to speak with. It’s in a good location as the Island is only 4 miles by 2 miles. They have a very nice continental breakfast with juice, coffee, yogurt and pastries. Great way to start the day. ||||We will be back to the Shelter Island House, it was such a nice visit.

My partner and I stayed at this beautiful property last year and fell in love with the place. It's now become our annual destination for my birthday weekend with our reservation coming up again this coming August. Can't wait!||||We found our Queen room, located on the second floor, to be perfect with a beautiful view of the pool area the rear property grounds. Upon arrival, we had a little problem with one of the pieces of furniture, but maintenance came up right away and fixed it.||||Our memorable weekend included breakfast sandwiches from Stars Cafe (tiny place in town, but good food) and dinners at SALT Waterfront Bar & Grill and Vine Street Cafe. Both meals were perfect.||||Relaxing days were spent on Crescent Beach where we rented lounge chairs and umbrellas. There is a bar/restaurant just across the road where we were able to purchase some "adult beverages". Days were spent relaxing and listening to the waves lapping up onto shore, which made us feel like we were on a tropical island.||||While a bit pricey, treat yourself and your loved one(s) to at least a weekend getaway at the Shelter Island House on Shelter Island.

A beautiful, quaint property for a lovely weekend getaway. My husband and I really enjoyed our time here - it was quiet, relaxing and very soothing. The birds chirping outside are such a treat and the property overall has really good vibes. The bed and sheets were very comfy. We explored the Island and Ram Island - visited beaches that felt private and biked our way around town. I 10/10 recommend. The bikes included were a great gesture but we rented our own for our longer haul bike plans. The staff is very kind especially the manager and Jimmy! Jimmy was very accommodating during dinner and just wanted us to have a great evening. It was very special and specific attention that most places can never offer.

The room I booked was over $400 in October-I thought it would be worth it because of the advertised fire place. The fire place can’t be used-it does not have a gas insert and it can’t burn wood either? We were offered $ 50 off, but it’s not the point. False advertisement. Also our room #14 is right next to the kitchen-we could literally hear conversations through the wall-it was crazy. I’m not sure why they didn’t think of sound when building this “suite” which is really a room. On a very positive note, the place is very clean and kept up, the continental breakfast was nice, the bed and linens great, the shower in the room was awesome but you could still here people talking in that space, Just not what I expected. Maybe the other rooms are more sound-proof. I would have asked for another room if we were staying more than one night. Ask before you book. I read trip advisor reviews to figure out where to stay-so that is why I’m reviewing this place. It is quite pricey and should be worth it.

Stayed here with my husband and daughter for a weekend getaway. I have never been to shelter island and was really looking forward to getting away .I was a bit disappointed with our queen room. It definitely didn’t look like the hotel room pictures online and needs a little updating|| I didn’t see an outdoor bar and the pool outside isn’t heated. I would also warn people with kids to be be careful of the water in the bathroom it gets super heated even if turn on just the cold I almost burned my hand a few times. The indoor osprey bar now has a limited menu.|| What I did love about the place was that it was quaint, had a decent breakfast given the times and is close to crescent beach .You can walk there from the hotel and they did offer a town beach pass for the whole week which was $70. The employees were pleasant. They do have beach chairs and umbrellas as well as bikes available for you to use which was a nice touch. || I would come back and stay here just wish it wasn’t as expensive for the room. But it’s hard to find places to stay out here for a reasonable price during the summer season

Yelp
Gorgeous accommodations. So pretty, clean, nice pool and seating area. Complimentary coffee station in lobby (with actual good coffee!). Friendly staff! Loved it! Highly recommend staying here.

Yelp
Surprised to see so many positive reviews- and I booked based on those reviews. This property is not well maintained. The bathroom was outdated, moldy and needed basic repairs. The bed needs to be replaced. Everything feels like it needs a deep clean. The bikes and pool chairs are just thrown in a shed and are worn out. Not even a drinking glass in the room. One woman working front desk who was not incredibly helpful. The restaurant was not open so cannot comment on that. Good location however not remotely worth $395 per night.

Yelp
Shelter island house is a lovely boutique hotel with classic, well manicured facilities. The entire space was light, clean and yes, I dare say, had a "Hamptons feel" to it. I don't care much for the Hamptons life but I sure would love my place decorated like this! If it was warmer during my visit, I would have love to soak up some Vitamin D on the patio or in the pool. They even have bikes on premises for guests to rent if you want to head down to the beach. My room was bright and clean. It obviously had been updated but retained a classic chic vibe. Bedding was comfy, overhead fan was much appreciated at well. As this is an older house, and a small inn, you will head folks coming up the stairs or talking in the hallways. I'd suggest some more carpets or sound absorbing panels. The tavern was conveniently located downstairs, so our bed was only a stumble away, if needed! The menu was typical pub fare with a smattering of healthier options thrown in. The roasted chicken was flavorful and tender as can be while the ahi tuna burger was fresh, but had a bit too much sauce for my purist preference. All of our dishes took eons to come out of the kitchen and was not one bit our friendly waitresses fault. Maybe the kitchen needed anything helping hand. Breakfast was included, but was rather spartan and slim pickings by 9am. (Served from 8-10, I believe). Another small thorn in my side is that I KNOW I left my toiletry bag in the bathroom. It wasn't in my luggage. I emailed, called, and was told I'd be notified if housekeeping found it. One week later, and no word from the staff. I'm going to take a guess and assume that it was likely thrown out, because, well, who wants my funky makeup, face-wash and deodorant? Extremely disappointing.

Yelp
Pros: location and great hedges Cons: to echo to another reviewer, bugs everywhere, no staff anywhere at any time. Continental breakfast is very weak and starts too late. My room felt very worn, unclean, and smelled of mildew/water damage. Barely cleaned each day. My kids and wife both slipped on the same paver each morning, which each morning is wet and supports the fact that there is no staff present actively managing guest experiences. There's no walkway to the back house, you're just expected to get your shoes soaked each morning. Grass not mown in 2 weeks, bushes not trimmed in months each day we had to avoid prickly branches just to get into our door. Cannot believe I wasted 425/night on this no frills fake.

Yobi N.

Yelp
Look at the pictures, that should be enough to avoid the place. $475 per night! First impression is positive but it spoils very quickly, because at this price: - the room is worn out, overlooking the waterproofness of the house, with a breathtaking view of the parking lot... - the furniture is partly broken, unbalancing and you find labels of clothes bought by other occupants... - the shower head is scaled, mouldy, just like the joints, and you find a toothpaste cap in the drain of the sink... - the air conditioning makes a hell of a blower sound and if you open the windows, those equipped with mosquito nets, you can smell the kitchen smells. - breakfast is negligent and terribly mean. - you will go up and down a very steep staircase yourself, - you are busted less than an hour after your arrival because your credit card did not show up to pay the balance. - Etc... The only place where we had to give our card number, expiry date and cryptogram by phone was the SHELTER ISLAND HOUSE. Everywhere else, we paid in cash or by dialing our PIN code. We arrived on August 12 at SHELTER ISLAND HOUSE and the hacking of our card began on August 13, forcing us to stop our card a week later, until we realized it. Coincidence? A disturbing coincidence, we remember having given all the information on the card when booking on 16 February and never again afterwards. It is legitimate to wonder with what degree of protection such sensitive data is kept by SHELTER ISLAND HOUSE.

Yelp
We (a party of two) had dinner here on a Wednesday night just after Labor Day. The restaurant has a great ambiance and the food was excellent. The bar and entire restaurant - patio included - was packed, and the one big problem was that it was severely understaffed. There was one waitress on staff for the entire place, and they at one point had the hostess bringing out food and drinks. Our waitress was friendly but very clearly stressed, and really couldn't take more than twenty seconds to take our order. There was zero time for us to ask about the menu at all. I would certainly go back, as the dinner was delicious; however, hopefully management makes a better call next time and staffs the restaurant.

Yelp
You will probably enjoy a good experience here as long as you are not highly sensitive to noise (especially in a first floor room) - and do not take room 10 - nearest to the lobby. There was no water pressure in the shower, and the A/C/ window unit was loud. It was not properly sealed, so lots of critters got into the room, and I was stung in the bed under my eye by a flying insect of some sort. The restaurant looks very good and has pleasant outdoor seating. I had breakfast here and it was lovely, with fresh croissants, although no butter or jam was served with them. They also do not have half and half for coffee- it's milk, so I had to request cream (which was fine). I appreciated the fresh figs on a small plate of fruits, but not the mold on one of the strawberries, and on one cherry! For the price of a room, I expected a little better. Definitely take a larger, second floor room.

Yelp
For a master class in hospitality look no further than Shelter Island House. Welcoming, comfortable and immaculately maintained. Great base location to explore the rest of the island. Will definitely stay again.

Yelp
I unfortunately needed to give this place 1 star in order to write the review however I actually wouldn't give it any stars at all. To be brutally honest anyone looking for a hotel in shelter island NEEDS to steer clear of Shelter Island House. This hotel was extremely disappointing. Upon arrival we were brought to our suite, upon entering the door a stale, musty, sewer like smell hit you right in the face. This smell was pungent and nauseating. We looked around the room and tried to figure out where the smell was coming from. In looking around the room we saw a few bugs on the floor. Some were alive so we killed them and some were dead. This bothered us because it made us feel as if the place was not cleaned well prior to our arrival. We Informed the front desk where the receptionist stated, "I don't know what to do". After asking to speak with a manager, 2 managers arrived at our room & they reported smelling it as well, not knowing where it was coming from. While in our room remarks were made such as, "ohh your friends just checked out" meanwhile this was not true and even if it was should a smell like this linger if a room was properly cleaned. They went on to say and I quote " no on ever has a problem with this room". They then began to say that " a family of 4 just checked out maybe it's a dirty diaper" again if this is the case and there was a dirty diaper left why wouldn't it be gone since the room was "supposedly cleaned" then they said " the ceo of chase was here yesterday and didn't complain, not like you guys are less important". These comments were rude and demeaning and not warranted. All we wanted was for the room to be re-cleaned so that the smell wouldn't linger. Rather than apologize and try to fixed the problem the manager instead ignore and made up excuses that there never was a problem before. From the moment Suzanne walked in she stero-typed us because we were all girls in our mid 20s to early 30s. Truthfully it doesn't matter what gender we were or how old we are we are customers and us having an issue should have been a priority it shouldn't have been ignored. Upon further discussion Suzanne the manager stated she was going to rectify this by sending someone to reclean our room and gave us 2 bottles of wine. Oh and let me not forget she brought us ONE Glade air freshener for our 3 bedroom suite. We went by the pool which was directly behind our room. No one came to clean our room even though this is what we were promised. Upon arrival back to our room, it was not seen or cleaned by housekeeping and the smell still persist. After some time in the sun, we came in to get ready for dinner and take a short nap. On 2 of the 4 beds we found bugs. On one of the beds was a dead bug's carcass and in the other bed was a live bug. This is not surprising because parts of the vents were missing and Cobb Webb's covered the inside of the vents. When we told this to the front desk they assured us that they would change the sheets. We waited over and hour to have someone come and no one came. We then went to the front desk and in a picture frame was a note saying if we had an issue to call the manager. We called and no one answered for over an hour. When Suzanne did answer she immediately made up an excuse that she was busy with another customer waiting for an ambulance. When we told her about the bus situation she told us "we do not have house keeping after 4 pm. So no one is going to change your sheets they came from the laundromat and are fine and nothing catastrophic is happening". Rather than uphold her word she got defensive again and told us that" if we are unhappy we could leave" we said only if we were refunded and she said "nothing is catastrophically wrong with the room so no" and she laughed at us on the phone when we were speaking to us. She never apologized for any of the issues that occurred instead just kept stating " there has never been a problem with this room before" As a group we were extremely displeased with this hotel but the hospitality at this establishment is awful. . In addition, often times there was no staff member at the front desk. This is troubling as far as safety is concerned. Anyone could walk into the hotel and on the property and no one would know. A perfect example of this is when we returned from dinner. We returned from dinner at about 10pm. We walked in the front door passed the front desk no one was there . No one was at the bar. We proceeded through the back door patio no one was there. We walked by the pool that was closed at 7pm ( gates aren't locked anyone could have gone in and no one would have known) we then went to our room. Yes we were guests but security was none existent. Overall I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone!

Yelp
What a great night. Excellent food, great staff and super great vibe. The day of the shelter island fireworks is always super busy and even though all the tables were filled we had perfect service! They are very kid friendly and the children's dinners came out as quickly as possible, our request, and they were actual meals, not after thoughts like box mac and cheese or frozen tenders. Real food, kids loved it. Then they got to go play on the lawn and bocci ball court. Adults meals were even better, from pub fair to gourmet lamb chops, all were perfect. Prices as expected and certainly within the range one would expect on the "Island." Check it out. Oh, a great bar scene after dinner hours as well.

Yelp
This was our first visit to Shelter Island House and it certainly will not be our last! The hotel is stunning and there's a feeling of warmth giving you that "at home" feeling as soon as you step through the door. We were greeted by the new owner, Suzanne, who is so welcoming. She took great care of us and showed us to our room, which was beautiful. Clean and well lit, giving a spa-like atmosphere. Much needed after a long week! After settling in, we went down to the hotel's tavern - It was a chilly night so we had dinner by the cozy fireplace and enjoyed an amazing meal. Not only was the staff at the hotel and the restaurant incredibly hospitable and attentive, they were helpful with recommendations on where to go and fun places to check out while we were in town. The beach is a short walk from the hotel, too. We will definitely be back to stay at Shelter Island House soon!

Yelp
First off let me say this is the review for the restaurant not the hotel, although after my dining experience I wish I stayed there during my vacation. The staff are extremely friendly and are very observant. If you need a refill they get it if you need something they come right over. The owner comes over to the table and has a conversation...really cool atmosphere The food was excellent! I had the burger and my wife had the lobster roll. Both were just the right portion and were delicious. In short I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone on the island.

Yelp
Adorable place to stay on Shelter Island. The rooms are filled with the best linens & a Hamptons feel. The Tavern restaurant on premises is great! Awesome drinks and great food!

Yelp
Amazing! 5 stars...the absolute best place in the world..My boyfriend and I stayed in a King room overlooking the pool. It was his birthday and Suzanne was kind enough to upgrade us complimentary. They also placed rose petals on the bed. The bartender was sweet as well. We were offered beach chairs and grab and go sandwiches. We went to the beach and had a picnic! They have a lovely ping pong table and the vibe was welcoming and inviting. I wish I never had to leave and I can't wait to go back again. One word - LOVE!

Yelp
We had a company retreat here in May with 8 people which was a huge success. The new owner, Suzanne, was helpful, and had a TV set up for us to do some presentations, along with organizing lunch, snacks and cocktails. Wifi is available throughout the hotel. The dinner was delicious, and the new head chef has done a great job with the menu.

Yelp
Great place to stay in Shelter Island! Bocce court was a hit, bikes (in great condition) are available for guests to use, and backyard is a great place to relax. Everything is very up to date.

Yelp
Wonderful place to stay. My family and I are visiting for three nights and could not be happier with the location, rooms and service. When there was a problem with our kids sofa bed, the owner immediately step up and solved the problem. And she followed up to make sure we are fine. The staff is also equally committed to ensuring that the guests are comfortable. A shout out to Paula and Carly. They are knowledgable, courteous and efficient. Thanks for a memorable vacation SIH! We will be back.

Yelp
Warm and welcoming owners; delicious food and drinks; comfortable and cozy rooms. We LOVED our weekend here-- we felt like we were worlds away from our busy lives in Manhattan. From the moment we set foot at Shelter Island House we felt our stress melt away. Suzanne welcomed us with open arms and made us feel right at home. The tavern was a great place to have a nice cocktail and the food was also delicious at the restaurant. There are also various rooms throughout, including the back room, that you can find different places to unwind. We met other friendly couples and shared wine and appetizers by the fire. The rooms feel like a mix of a spa/beach resort and there is brunch downstairs in the morning with assorted yogurts and fresh pastries from a nearby bakery. Everything about the Inn just feels relaxing. I would highly recommend this for a short weekend getaway from Manhattan-- it's so close but feels so wonderfully far. I can't wait to visit again and let my stress melt away this summer!

Yelp
5 star if you love hard mattress. I don't and found it tough on my back. Otherwise the hotel is very cute and has a nice little bar and friendly staff.

Yelp
What a wonderful experience staying at Shelter Island Hotel. Everything was perfect. From food in the Tavern to service from the staff. Cant wait to go back!
