Sheraton Berlin Grand Hotel Esplanade

"Rooms with featherbeds and Tiergarten views combined with a location on tree-lined Unter den Linden make this 1988 L-shaped hotel "very relaxing and convenient." "The food is just fair," but Eck Restaurant is the place for German standards like schnitzel and potato pancakes; Harry’s New York Bar shakes more than 200 classic cocktails. "Great services" includes electric-car charging stations."

We weren’t especially excited about staying at the Sheraton, but we were pleasantly surprised. We appreciated the large room with a comfortable bed and plenty of soft pillows, the quiet lounge area, and the spacious breakfast room. Breakfast was excellent—especially the made-to-order omelets on the weekends. Although it’s not close to a metro stop, the #100 bus was very convenient.

Room: pretty spacious, comfortable beds, good shower pressure and temperature. There were small maintenance issues, but not a big deal. Curtains did a decent job keeping the light out, though blackout layer was fixed and didn’t cover window’s length Heating, which seemed central, was off, so the room would get chilly during the night, this being late summer. Service was a mixed bag: restaurant and reception service were friendly and efficient, but they didn’t have room service. We had to go downstairs to fetch our food on those large, heavy trays. Food was good, not excellent. Telephone didn’t work half the time, so we couldn’t get support easily. Parking garage was indoors, large with plenty of spaces, and easy to access. Hotel is close to the marathon entry point, took me about 30min to walk to the Berlin marathon area entrance. However, location is far from subway stations, so not a 5 here. Overall a good hotel, but I expected more from an official, and very expensive, event hotel.

Soulless has-been hotel|I booked this stay for work. It was very quiet on arrival. I was told I was upgraded due to my status to a suite. The suite looked spacious and light filled if dated. The shower flooded d/ t the drain being backed up. Front desk was notified and said they would send maintenance. After I returned from dinner, the bathroom floor was still flooded. Front desk did not answer the phone, necessitating a trip to the front desk. Apparently the technician had come by and concluded that the flooding was due to the shower door not being fully closed. When I explained what had happened, front desk offered me another room. I agreed only if I could see the shower draining normally becauseit was ckear that the hotel is old. After the front desk agent showed me the new room and that the shower drain worked well, I packed up all my $hit and moved to the new suite. What a waste of time. But to his credit, the front desk did give me a new room.||The gym is sad. The equipment is dated but workable. The lights weren't even on all the way as if to disguise how sad it was. The pool was drained; at least the lights were on. I later learned that the hotel is going to be shut next week for renovation. There was hardly anyone in the lobby. The whole place feels like a deserted ship. I should have read the reviews before booking. Save your time and go somewhere else.

It was a pretty miserable place. My card was cloned by the staff (I know because it’s the only time I ever had to hand over my card and have it taken away - I always use Apple Pay) so then had to deal with fraudulent charges to my account after. Don’t know if the bleak surroundings were just Berlin or the hotel itself.

It’s far from subway stations. The restaurants, specially breakfast, are good. There are limited option’s, but the food is delicious. The room was good, clean, tidy. But we never got enough towels, room service only worked if you picked up the food (so, bar service not room service…), reception and house keeping never answered the phone - I would have thought it wasn’t working but I called the bar service to order food…

By US standards, this is a good Sheraton with well appointed rooms that are modern and clean. I was given a nice upgrade to a very spacious top floor room with a balcony. The Bonvoy lounge is good with ok food and beer and wine selections. Breakfast was in the main dining room with typical offerings plus some German additions. The hotel is generally well maintained with the exception of the entrance (which has sun faded artifical plants and was leaf strune) and my room's balcony which definetly needed weeding. The hotel seemed desolate which is perhaps due to it being the weekend which gave it a rather souless feel. As a top tier Bonvoy member. the front desk did not welcome me in the usual manner. The hotel's location is good and within a 20 minute walking distance of restaurants and shopping.

Apparently, blackout curtains are still considered futuristic technology at this hotel. Instead, you get thin curtains that let every single ray of sunlight burst into the room at dawn. Who needs an alarm clock when the sun slaps you awake at 6 a.m.?||It’s almost impressive how they managed to overlook something so basic. Sleep? Forget it. If you enjoy being woken up by daylight whether you want it or not, this is the place for you.||A comfortable bed means nothing if you can’t actually rest in it. But hey, at least you’ll never oversleep checkout.

I had a comfortable stay at the Sheraton Berlin. Check-in and check-out were quick and smooth, and I appreciated that I got my room early. The rooms are spacious, and equipped the basic amenities. You get one bottle of water for your stay, but the tap water is safe to drink. Beds were comfortable, but the upholstery and carpeting looked worn. The air conditioning is quite weak, so on a hot day the room feels quite warm even with the dial on the AC turned down to the lowest setting. Breakfast is simple but delicious: a selection of fresh, seasonal fruit, yogurt, salads, breads, cold cuts and of course eggs and sausage. The location is great, with three bus lines within a 5 minute walk.

Yelp
The hotel delivered on its primary objective for me, which was a place to sleep close to the start of the Berlin Marathon. Beyond that, it was mostly an 'eh' experience and one that had a few misses as well. Worth noting, my stay was covered via points, so it is hard to know how I would be rating had I paid out of pocket. Let's start with location. As others have noted, it is not really within walking distance of the usual tourist attractions of Berlin. It was a short walk to the starting area for the marathon. However, not being walkable to the tourist attractions also meant it was a bit off the path which had helped me discover some solid, less touristy places to eat (nice bonus imo). Public transport in the area is also easy to navigate and with their 24-hour and weekly pass options, not a huge cost which will throw your vacation out of balance. The rooms were clean and they were clearly prepared for the world post-COVID. The King bed room was big enough to accommodate the two of us although other hotels may offer slightly larger rooms. The A/C didn't really seem to work well, which was a bit of a downer given the unseasonably warm Fall weather. The staff was friendly and overall service was good. The concierge was quick to provide recommendations, arrange a taxi, and even went as far as provide us details on how and where to get our necessary pre-flight COVID testing completed. The front desk was quick to help when I managed to loose my key at the marathon starting line. I am not sure if I will ever be back to Berlin and if so for what. That being said, I would still recommend having this Sheraton in the mix of options.

Yelp
The rooms were very comfortable and well appointed. Housekeeping came through daily. Breakfast was a full array of dishes, typical German as well as many American foods on the buffet. The staff was very friendly and worked to understand my German but also were fluent in English. We enjoyed the bar in the evening and the staff their was very good, as well. The pub mix served was so good that I wished I could take some home. Overall, a great experience.

Yelp

The pumpkin soup is the best I've ever had! Wonderful attentive staff If I'm Berlin this restaurant is a MUST

Yelp
The team was fantastic, from the check-in, restaurant staff, chefs, housekeeping, driver service. Highly recommend the driver service - our driver was FANTASTIC! I greatly enjoyed my time in Berlin. Shopping & restaurant recommendations were all spot on. Lobby restaurant was also great! The room was clean & comfortable. Thanks to this great team!

Yelp
I am a big fan of Sheraton chain, but there are many hotels that I would prefer to the one in Berlin. It is relatively big, situated little off the beaten track, quite old. Other than that everything was fine, I got a nice upgrade, service was excellent, breakfast was fine too. Rooms are little outdated, but quite spacey. Even the regular ones. Windows overviewing the water are nice, but when opened it is getting quite noisy in the room, as there is a busy street just outside the hotel. Sometimes it is hard to understand their price policy. There are times when rooms are 360€ and the hotel is empty.

Yelp
I love SPG so giving two stars to Berlin Sheraton is not what I would have thought. Being Gold status member I believe I had one of the better rooms also since I booked for 10 days. The hotel gave me a room on top floor, 727, with not much of view. The room was small relatively speaking vs Marriott or Hilton or Pullman or Steigenberger or Melia or Intercontinental... The shower space felt small, there was little counter space above sink for toiletry, and the bed is a little bigger than a twin bed. I thought I would have at least a queen sized bed. The TV was one of the smallest I have seen for the past five years I had been coming to Berlin and staying at various properties. Even the closet space was small. It was crowded with three shirts and a suit hanging in there - that's after I removed the ironing board in there and put it on the floor. Where should I hang my winter coat?! The room was also freezing for two nights until I asked the front desk to check it. It turned out that the heating panel wasn't on. And, I thought it was the central AC issue. Somehow, the hotel forgot it was winter. The temperature dropped below 0c every night. The gym closed at 10pm. For international travelers who tried to get some exercise to help switch the clock, this was too early a shut down time. Others have 24 hours gym. Other than that, tried ringing the front desk / house keeping, the phone rang for 2-3 minutes without someone picking up, granted it was late in the evening. Hope the property improves or it would be hard for me to pick this property among other choices in Berlin.

Yelp
Service is okay , staff is helpful and friendly (to be expected at a 5 star) - rooms are quiet and adequate size

Yelp
Hotel was nice. The lounge was not done yet, and they didn't give any complementary drinks even though we had platinum status. The concierge consistently shot down our ideas and continued to give us vague directions on how to get anywhere. We were supposed to get a new bottle of water each day. They failed to fill that request. Breakfast was above average . We missed the last trip back to the hotel on the guided bus tour due to the same concierge not *correctly* knowing the details. We went on the tour during the weekend and the last trip is 2:40 NOT 5 FYI. I get it they're in the process of becoming a Sheraton, but please be sure to label your website where patrons can see that most of the amenities will not be ready and as such should not expect to receive the same SPG service that they would normally receive.

Yelp
Hmm. Wanted to like this place, but it was very dark in the lobby. Also, the room, though large, never got cool. The a/c doesn't work well. Breakfast was ho-hum. We left early and went somewhere cooler.

Yelp
Went to the Grand Hotel Esplanade for a few days away with the Mrs, the hotel is very nice, very big, (you can see it from quite far away). Pretty close to things like the Zoo, as last time we stayed in Berlin it was the other side so chose this one to mix things up a bit. The New York bar is quite chilled out and does a happy hour before 7 (I think) and everyone of the staff is very friendly. The only thing I'd say is having to pay for the extras; where a lot of other hotels have them included, the most glaring one was paying for the WiFi which was extortionately priced. Overall the 4 star was about right and I'd probably end up staying there again but I might look at other hotels in the same price range to see what extras came with the room booking.

Yelp
As this is such a high star hotel I thought it best to rate it due to what one would expect that comes with five star. The rooms are a nice size, the beds comfortable and the pillows had me wishing I could steal them all. The bathroom did have random blond hairs around the bathtub (I have nevere been blond in my life), which put me off quite a bit and daly I was surprised no conditioner was provided as one would expect with a five star hotel. You must pay for wifi and a room can only have two devices. Which is a shame as wifi should be included in a room these days. The breakfasts are incredibly good with everything from a typical German breakfast (cheese, meats, eggs, small veg, etc.) to lovely break and hot cooked food. The hotel restaurant had great food and was perfect after a long day working when you just can't make it outside. The pool is inviting and clean, as are the saunas of which there are three (which I highly recommend). Sadly though, the person I was staying with did enter a sauna after I had raved about it only to find an incredibly naked man was touching himself, so I don't think I will be entering again as that is unacceptable behaviour. All in all, a bit of a mixed bag from me I am afraid which is why I give it the low score. It comes down to cleanliness and the lack of wifi (having paid so much for the room) for me.

Yelp
Pros: As great as the property itself is, the staff is what made it special. Especially the young, shorter woman at the front desk and Jonny the Concierge Cons: Not a whole lot. There is construction going on in one of the restaurants, Eck, and work starts pretty early. That was it. Very minor. Location: A little far away for walking to most of the tourist attractions but only a short bus ride away from everything and the stop is about 75 yards away. Stayed there for a week and really helped make the Berlin vacation memorable and enjoyable. The hotel itself is beautiful. The food was very good (try the schnitzel and the mousse). Beds comfortable and showers powerful. But the staff was what really made it special. Jonny the Concierge is about as friendly and knowledgeable as I've ever seen. When I checked in on Sunday, 8/17, I lost one of my credit cards. The young, shorter woman w/ short hair (didn't get her name) checking me immediately called Visa and efficiently checked me in as well as help resolve my issue. All throughout the week, the front desk people and Jonny made a non-German-speaking, lone traveler like me visiting Berlin for the first time, comfortable and knowledgeable about their great city. Few hotels have had staff top to bottom that was this good and trust me, I travel a lot and am a hotel snob. Don't worry about the distance to the main tourist attractions. A 75 yard walk gets you to the M100 or M29 bus for only 2.60 Euros and gets you there while driving through the other tourist attractions. One piece of trivia, I learned from visiting the Bendlerblock memorial to the July 20, 1944 assassination attempt on Hitler as depicted in the movie "Valkyrie" that some of the guys that were supporting Von Stauffenberg (Tom Cruise) were hanging out at the lounge of the Esplanade waiting for word to get going. Bendlerblock is only about a ten minute walk from the hotel.

Yelp
It's an OK hotel, but everything, and I mean everything (even the sauna) is an additional service that you have to pay extra for. The cards were not functioning well and we had to get new ones every day. The room did not had the view we asked for. The breakfast was nice, and the personell were helpful and nice. All in all, I would choose another hotel in this price range.

Yelp
Hotel has a restaurant, bar, elevators, bar and spa/pool. comfortable except that the ac did not really cool the room and there is no coffee or tea service in room. Breakfast buffet is assorted, good taste. Location ok.
