You've Probably Been Whale Watching, but These New Trips Offer 'Whale Listening'

"A research site on Vancouver Island where scientists study orcas and humpbacks using hydrophones placed in the Salish Sea; the setup allows visitors to eavesdrop on underwater vocalizations via the lighthouse's engine-room speakers, providing an onshore listening experience." - Stephanie Vermillion Stephanie Vermillion Stephanie Vermillion is a travel journalist and photographer covering culture and adventure for Travel + Leisure Outside, and more. Amazing view!!! I'm a big fan of lighthouses & wanted to see one in real life, this one the first one I saw & I loved it! There is a free small parking nearby & you just have to walk a few minutes like 5 to 10 to get to this site! We didn't need any tickets we could come and see the outside of it at least, I don't even know if there's a way to go inside of the lighthouse, maybe during specific season, & maybe they would sell tickets for it, not sure about this though! Ps: there's also some public wifi at a cabin there if you need it, since data can be out there.

It was very calming just to wander around and listen to the waves crashing on the shore. If you're lucky, you might see whales or orcas. We weren’t that lucky :D But still, it’s a beautiful place and not crowded.

What a great place to visit. Free parking. Easy 5 to 10 minute hike from the parking lot. Super cool. Would highly recommend!

Nicely maintained by volunteers not a huge number of tourists know about it. It's a bit of a walk down so be prepared for a bit of a hike. There were sea lions and seals right there and another couple said we had just missed the Killer whales.

A lovely trail that leads to a cute lighthouse! I love that there was a live feed underwater so you know if there whales nearby! The view is absolutely gorgeous!! Highly recommend!

Weather was good and the view was awesome. We even saw some whale plumes and tails for a while! That was pretty cool. Too bad someone had vandalized the hydrophone speaker that's attached to the lighthouse - we might have been able to hear the whales, too.

We went with the kids, it was a short walk thru the forest and down a big hill but well worth it. It was fun to play around with the giant Fresnel Lens and learn about the history. We even saw whales from the lighthouse deck. Would recommend for a relatively short excursion.

Make a stop here. Its worth seeing this lighthouse. Short walk from the parking lot. The history is interest how this was built. Now its run by society. Well maintained site.
