Sheroes' Hangout – Agra, India - Gastro Obscura

"Standing in the shadow of the Taj Mahal, in the city of Agra, rests an unassuming cafe with a colorful mural and an admirable mission to empower women. Tucked away on a dusty street amidst a cacophony of rickshaws and pedestrians stands Sheroes’ Hangout. This pay-what-you-choose cafe employs women who have survived harrowing acid attacks, often at the hands of their own family members or romantic partners. According to USA Today, acid attacks have been on the rise in India, averaging an estimated 250 to 300 victims per year. Often the acid, which is easily procured and extremely corrosive, leaves its victims deformed, blind, and forever scarred. Acid attacks in India tend to be the result of a personal conflict (such as jealousy, lust or rejection). In the case of one Sheroes’ Hangout employee, she underwent 10 reconstructive surgeries after having acid tossed in her face for denying her cousin’s romantic advancements. Victims of such horrific acts can struggle to find their place in society and secure employment. Sheroes’ Hangout aims to empower acid attack survivors while spreading awareness of violence against women in India. “People think that acid attack victims are from the outer world. Sheroes’ is an effort to make them believe that they are from this world only,” Ashish Shukla, a lead campaigner for Stop Acid Attacks, told Al Jazeera. “Since we as a society are responsible for their scars, it is our responsibility to fix it and bring them into the mainstream of society.” Sheroes’ Hangout represents the growing revolution of women who are standing up against the widespread femicide and female-based violence in India. Groups, such as the vigilante pink-clad ‘Gulabi Gang’ now travel from town-to-town educating men and taking on the patriarchy. With their hot pink saris, the Gulabi Gang carry forth the message of anti-violence that places like Sheroes’ Hangout are eager to spread. Sheroes’ Hangout serves fresh Indian fare such as Vegetarian Biryani, Paneer Butter Masala, and Dal Fry. While the food is regaled as being fresh and authentic, it is the mission behind Sheroes’ Hangout that is the main draw. The cafe features women-made art and aims to educate each person who walks in on the reality of acid attacks in the country. Each woman employed at Sheroes’ Hangout is a brave survivor, courageously finding new beginnings after their attacks, reminding each of us that true beauty is found within. Know Before You Go Sheroes' Hangout is located behind Go Stops Hostelin, Taj Nagari Phase 1, Agra. Just above the Meena Bazar shop. For those interested in supporting the work of Sheroes' Hangout, online donations are accepted." - daraius, Nikki Vargas

Run by acid attack survivors, this little restaurant / cafe has a very homey feel about it. The paneer makhani and roti were fully wholesome and filling. Stories of the women line the walls. If they aren't busy serving, then they are tied up with one job or other. While we were there, they were cutting fabric and sewing. Payment is what you want to give, it's a donation of support more than anything else. Part of the cafe is a gift shop filled to the brim with crafts made by the women themselves. Any visitor to Agra should pop in for a home away from home experience.

Just visit it! If you pass by Agra, for whichever reason, do stop here, it is a no brain. What this organization is trying to build is simply great. Dignity is given back to all those females unreasonably attacked with acid. Go, support and share, it is the best thing that you can do to help them get back to a decent life. And yes, food served is good, if not even better than most of the places in the area and you pay it as much as you think it is worth (basically it is a donation). Icing on the cake? You can get an henna tatoo in few minutes. Just visit it!

A Truly Transformative Experience – More Than Just a Meal Visiting the Sheroes Hangout Café in Agra has been one of the most moving and inspiring experiences of my life. This is not just a restaurant – it's a beacon of hope, courage, and resilience. Run entirely by acid attack survivors, this place embodies strength, dignity, and the true spirit of humanity. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted not only with warm smiles but with an overwhelming sense of purpose. Each woman working there has a powerful story – of pain, of struggle, but most importantly, of survival and triumph. Their confidence, hospitality, and grace turned what was meant to be a simple meal into a deeply emotional and unforgettable journey. What’s incredibly unique is that there is no price on the menu. You eat whatever you like, as much as you want, and pay whatever amount you feel like donating. It’s an act of trust and compassion – one that reflects the soul of this café. The food is delicious, lovingly prepared, and served with immense care. But beyond that, it’s the atmosphere – filled with strength, positivity, and silent stories – that nourishes the heart. This café is not just serving food; it’s serving awareness, breaking stigma, and giving acid attack survivors their voice, their agency, and a chance to live with dignity. It’s a living example of how we, as a society, can come together to support, uplift, and empower one another. If you're visiting Agra, I urge you to step beyond the usual tourist trail and spend time at this extraordinary place. Listen to their stories, support their mission, and leave not just with a full stomach, but a fuller heart. This is more than a restaurant. It’s a revolution – served with love.

My G Adventures tour stopped here on our way to the Taj Mahal. The food they served was delicious & I had a biscoff shake too since they use filtered water for ice. I am really glad that women who've been assaulted so horribly are able to find employment & community here. I was very happy to buy extra souvenirs from here to go towards helping acid attack survivors.

We visited here whilst in Agra, the women were super welcoming and the food was absolutely gorgeous, it is a donation based cafe so there are no prices, but do give generously as this is for such an amazing cause, to bring awareness to acid attacks and the vibe is awesome and the food well worth it. Whilst there i had some henna done and it is gorgeous, i love it ! Truly beautiful place. Would have given 5 stars if it was fully Vegan. Staff are very informed on Vegan options, helped us with choosing off the menu and were knowledgable. Descriptions on all the food we had on photos uploaded, we had a feast ! Lychee juice was super tasty.

Can't say anything negative about this space because it oozes positivity. The women working here are so friendly and will ensure you have the best food in the town. The food is simple yet tasty. It is a cozy place where you can find peace and draw inspiration from the stories of the survivors who work here.

A lovely cafe that is trying to be part of the community and shout very loud about what they are trying to achieve. I recommend anyone go for a visit and sit and watch the video that they do ask of you are ok to watch. This is a charity so all food and drink is pay what you can.
