New Zealand Food Is Making Its Way Onto the Map

"Sherwood Queenstown offers an on-site dining experience with views of Lake Wakatipu, featuring produce from the hotel restaurant’s garden. The menu includes local mushrooms from Remarkable Fungi." - Ashley Day

On the Grid : Sherwood

"This place is other of our favourites in Queenstown. Located a 30-40 min walk from town, Sherwood is a vibrant and well thought out accommodation. They have a very eco and 'green' approach. The bar/restaurant has a lovely vibe in the evening and food is always great. Very modern and laid back." - makebardo

"Welcome to one of Queenstown's most versatile venues. Formerly a 1980s motel—check out the quirky Tudor-style exterior—Sherwood's now been reborn as a stylish destination in a hilltop location around twomilesfrom the center of town. There are still well-priced accommodations on offer, but the tastier focus here is the hip bistro and bar. The seasonal menu spotlights local meats including salmon, lamb, and venison, and a well-curated drink list includes just maybe New Zealand's most eclectic assembly of wines as well as craft beer from Queenstown's Altitude Brewing. Check out Sherwood's Facebook page for its occasional live-music and comedy nights, or sign up for daily yoga and well-being sessions to provide balance between virtue and vice."

We had a great one night stay here! The room was really nice and comfy, and had everything we needed to make our own little breakfast with food we brought. We also benefited from the sauna which is a nice perk. We did have dinner at the restaurant which was one of the nicest meals we had in NZ during our two weeks there!! Absolutely delicious food (with great views too). The Sherwood stands out and we would definitely stay there again (and longer)!

If you're staying in Queenstown, this place is surely hard to beat. Beatiful garden with amazing views, a little waterfall and creek, a fantastic restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner, sauna, and more. The food at the restaurant was great, and the atmosphere is so good. Fireplaces, good lighting, music etc. The rooms are good size, with comfortable beds, very clean, and our bathroom even had a tub for a relaxing bath at the end of a fun day exploring the sights Queenstown has to offer. Can't recommend this place enough!!

A warm cozy eco friendly room. Intimate for a young family. Welcomed by front of house and easy to locate our room which was less than a minute walk. Only thing missing was a fan in the bathroom otherwise had the bare minimum which was expected considering the bargain we got to stay here. Kept warm with a heater during 2 degree evening/mornings.

We booked a room for two people. The place is very nice and the building is well maintained. It was always very clean and had all the amenities. The only thing is that you can hear a lot of noise from the floor above or next door, but it’s understandable knowing that the building is old and the construction system used. The service was excellent. It is close to a bus stop, so it is easy to go to the city center or the airport if you don’t have a car. Recommended.

We booked room with mountain view with same day booking and the price we paid, was pretty decent which we extended for another night 😊. Honestly, rooms are pretty basic but worth the money and definitely loved free Sauna. We have tried the coffee at in house cafe and loved it. And lastly, the staff were all very welcoming and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay.

We enjoyed our stay at Sherwood, which is well-located. The accommodation was comfortable for 3 of us, the beds were comfortable and the kitchenette well-stocked. We love the sustainability of the property. Our dinner and breakfast was delicious. The water pressure was great although the bathroom was dated. The staff was friendly and helpful.

We stayed here for a night about 3 months ago. The delay with this review is because I wanted to give the hotel time to respond to our feedback. They have feedback forms in the room which is a very nice touch and it makes you feel like they take feedback seriously. I wrote to them following up on the written feedback that we handed over to the front desk as we were leaving. We also left feedback at the restaurant during and after our dinner while paying the bill. After waiting almost 3 weeks for a response I feel obligated to leave this review. We stayed here at the end of an incredible holiday in Wanaka. Sherwood hotel was a supposed to be a luxurious treat at the end of our trip. The room is basic but tasteful and comfortable. The sauna was a fantastic touch which we enjoyed. The rooms was quite visibly dusty. Black surfaces are very unforgiving in that regard. What was completely shocking was that when you closed the door to the toilet there was a thick layer of dust (easily a few months old) between the door and the wall. It was surprising that a hotel that charges you $400 plus for a room night would be that careless. My partner even wrote the word 'dusty' in the dust. There was light that poured in from outside until about 1.40 am so as you can imagine it was a terrible night's sleep. The shower fixtures were hard to operate for consistent hot water. There was a fair bit of fidgeting that had to be done which we did not appreciate. The location of this hotel is beautiful and the views from the restaurant were spectacular. We were looking forward to dinner here. I have to mention that the drinks/cocktails were the highlight of our trip. They were superb. We opted for the tasting menu which in my opinion (as a chef) was extremely mediocre. There were interesting things on the menu but the tasting menu which usually should be about highlighting the best the restaurant has to offer was a very budget tasting menu. The porchetta for the mains was great but with basic accomplishments like potatoes, carrots and salad. Overall the food was fine but I wouldn't rush back especially with the fantastic food options all around. The thing that has been most upsetting is that they clearly don't care enough about customer feedback. It is thoroughly disappointing in the current hospitality climate and I will reserve my hard earned money for hospitality businesses that do care about their guests🙏

The hotel is 3 star, I could not rest properly because all the noises of the rooms above and from the side are heard. Of the six days I was there, they never vaccuming the floor. The attention during check-in and check-out was correct. The location is nice, leaving for the street you have the bus stop. The room didn't have a TV, if it had a radio.
