On the Grid : Sherwood

"This place is other of our favourites in Queenstown. Located a 30-40 min walk from town, Sherwood is a vibrant and well thought out accommodation. They have a very eco and 'green' approach. The bar/restaurant has a lovely vibe in the evening and food is always great. Very modern and laid back." - makebardo

New Zealand Food Is Making Its Way Onto the Map

"A hotel with an on-site restaurant that highlights produce from its own garden and offers dining with views across a scenic lake, emphasizing local ingredients and community connections such as shared mushroom suppliers." - Ashley Day

"Welcome to one of Queenstown's most versatile venues. Formerly a 1980s motel—check out the quirky Tudor-style exterior—Sherwood's now been reborn as a stylish destination in a hilltop location around twomilesfrom the center of town. There are still well-priced accommodations on offer, but the tastier focus here is the hip bistro and bar. The seasonal menu spotlights local meats including salmon, lamb, and venison, and a well-curated drink list includes just maybe New Zealand's most eclectic assembly of wines as well as craft beer from Queenstown's Altitude Brewing. Check out Sherwood's Facebook page for its occasional live-music and comedy nights, or sign up for daily yoga and well-being sessions to provide balance between virtue and vice."

It’s okay. I’ve been coming here for about 6 years. I’ve noticed a decline in service recently however. Rooms definitely do not feel worth the money you pay for them, and guest wifi which is what you use unless you have access to the VIP internet is also very slow. Staff are hit or miss, I’ve only really encountered pleasant staff in the restaurant, people at reception aren’t very polite. One thing I heavily dislike is how the hotels car parking is for “everybody” including guests coming for the events that are sometimes on. I feel like as someone who is paying to sleep here I am obliged to have a carpark when I come home. Guy in the office said it’s free for anybody coming here for whatever reason. Dinner? Sure. But these events last all night you can hear it still going on at almost 1 in the morning which kept me up one time because a whole group of people were talking extremely loudly right outside where my room was which is near the area they play the music in etc. I don’t see see why visitors who aren’t paying to stay here can take a carpark while hotel guests who are paying to stay here have to park all the way up the road and walk down to their room if everything is taken by eventgoers. Aside from that it’s an eco friendly place, a lot of the stuff they use in the kitchen is grown at the hotel. Bathroom products are also eco friendly and they use solar panels. Not all rooms have a TV you have to specifically choose one that does have one and they’re more expensive so keep that in mind, bring a laptop or iPad with you to watch Netflix or something.

Made a reservation for lunch. Food was great, however the initial service we received to say was subpar is an understatement. For a restaurant that is hatted, I believe that the experience should start with service. When we arrived. We were waiting at the entrance for over five minutes before being served. Once we were finally acknowledged, we were told to just take any table which with a party of 5, we had to move tables ourselves to join a long enough table. From there, we had to get our own menus. Food was great and the second waitress that then looked after us was fantastic. When it came time to pay, probably not another great experience when I was left waiting again at the counter whilst a conversation was being had at the end of the bar between server and someone else. All in all. Exceptional food letdown by service which doesn’t match the hatted rating it’s received.

We didn’t stay at Sherwood, but were lucky enough to dine at their restaurant after a recommendation to check it out. Incredible is an understatement. It was absolutely divine. From the atmosphere to the service to the cocktails to the food... 10/10 experience. Can’t wait to return.

We did not feel our stay at Sherwood lived up to the price tag. The room had a great view and was furnished well but the bed was not comfortable. You could request better pillows from reception which we did but these were not delivered. The Hotel leaves a lot of amenities lacking under the guise of “sustainability” but this felt more like cost cutting and really impacted our stay. For example the rubbish bins didn’t have bags/bin liners and there was no milk for the coffee, you had to go and get this at reception. There was a hairdryer in the room but for all other amenities you had to walk to reception. We also deliberately left the heating on when we left for a meal so we could come back to a warm room on a cold winters day, but this was turned off in our absence (may have been automatic but meant the room was freezing). The bathroom was also not up to par. Overall the view was good and it was a nice location but it was not a comfortable or convenient stay.

Chanced upon this restaurant as we were staying next door at Holiday Inn and looking for somewhere close by to have dinner and celebrate a family member's birthday. Definitely did not regret our spontaneous decision to try this restaurant! Great food options with excellent ambience. Loved all the dishes, particularly the duck sausage flatbread, paua pasta and the wagyu dish- all super tender and generous serving as well. Would return here if we are ever back in town again

We had a great one night stay here! The room was really nice and comfy, and had everything we needed to make our own little breakfast with food we brought. We also benefited from the sauna which is a nice perk. We did have dinner at the restaurant which was one of the nicest meals we had in NZ during our two weeks there!! Absolutely delicious food (with great views too). The Sherwood stands out and we would definitely stay there again (and longer)!

The food from the restaurant was so delicious that we had to bring our friends for a second round a few days later. The flatbread and paua pasta were so addictive! The only thing we were disappointed about was that they had decreased the flatbread size and priced it accordingly on our 2nd visit so our friends only experienced the smaller portions. We would have paid the price for the larger size since they were that good. Would recommend to keep the previous portion size if possible.

If you're staying in Queenstown, this place is surely hard to beat. Beatiful garden with amazing views, a little waterfall and creek, a fantastic restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner, sauna, and more. The food at the restaurant was great, and the atmosphere is so good. Fireplaces, good lighting, music etc. The rooms are good size, with comfortable beds, very clean, and our bathroom even had a tub for a relaxing bath at the end of a fun day exploring the sights Queenstown has to offer. Can't recommend this place enough!!

Yelp
Great restaurant at a surprisingly reasonable price for Queenstown. Food 4 / 5: In general, food was solid. The ingredient quality of some of the vegetables was phenomenal but some of the others were a bit meh. The dishes we got were: 1) Garlic flatbread 4/5: They have a wood fired oven so it came out the way it should and the garlic / rosemary flavor was good but it was over salted. 2) radishes with yogurt 4/5: Radish quality was excellent but the yogurt was pretty bland. 3) salt baked baby beets 3/5: Beets were a bit too dry and generally of pretty average quality. 4) lettuce salad 5/5: Amazing ingredient quality with everything in here, particularly the sprouts. Didn't want to stop eating this! 5) twice cooked potatoes 2/5: Potatoes were cooked fine but the sauce was pretty bland. 6) Spring carrots 5/5: Great carrot quality and very well flavored 7) Asparagus 5/5: Amazingly cooked and flavored (with something that reminded us of balsamic vinegar). This is a must order Service and place 4/5: Service was generally attentive and friendly, but a few things to note. 1) The chairs are bar stools and don't have backs 2) we were seated next to the kitchen which was noisy and lot of food aroma + heat from wood fired oven carried over 3) it took a while at the end to get our waitress to come and pack our food

Yelp
This restaurant has a very cool vibe and ambiance and the food is pretty good, but giving it 2 stars for service, which was incredibly slow. It took 30 minutes to get a drink and over an hour for our first course to come out. Our main course came out almost 2 hours after we first ordered. Several others in our section were also waiting a very long time for their orders. It was only maybe an hour and a half into being there that someone came over and apologized to the tables in our section for the kitchen being "slammed." The restaurant was not at full capacity - many tables were empty - and they did not appear to be short staffed with front of house. Maybe they were just having an off night, but was definitely expecting a higher level of service for what I expected to be a fine dining experience.

Yelp
Good drinks, random music, variable food... The maitre de was great - making us up the Cardrona spirits cocktail 'Quince-a-dince' and suggesting a fabulous local Pinot noir. We grabbed dinner here as our air bnb was around the corner. The menu is minimalist in nature - it just lists the main ingredients and noting much about the nature of the dish or cooking method. They recommend sharing - cue my cynical nature! But actually our meal of gnocchi, kumara mash and side salad was just what we needed.... The smoked gnocchi was fabulous - served with mushrooms and a lovely sauce. The kumara mash was over salted - an extra sprinkle at the pass not needed perhaps?! The side salad was ok for a basic salad. Music was random... I really don't know what they were playing!! I felt like I was in an advant garde opera... Overall not a bad place for a 5 min walk on easter weekend when we hadn't booked anywhere... oh and apparently they have lots of live music too (just not Easter Sunday!)

Yelp
The Sherwood stood out because of its eco-focus. Recycling and conservation were consistent themes. We had a partial lake view (nothing special). The hotel has a more casual, bohemian feel to it. The staff was friendly and helpful.

Yelp
This place is so good!!! I was surprised at how busy it was given that it was in a hotel. The food came out good and I loved my fish. My partner got the lamb and it was... ok. We said something and they responded with discounting our meals. I loved some of the wines and cocktails they had. Totally come prepared to eat!

Yelp
The vibe here was great. The reception was warm and welcoming, gave my husband and I tons of advice on where to eat in town-which we're always so grateful for. They offer complimentary organic milk upon arrival to have with tea or coffee in your room, the milk was delicious. The room was clean and smelled wonderful. We really enjoyed reading about the eco-friendly design and materials used to furnish the room. We stayed in a two bed bunker room and were so surprised as to how comfortable the beds were. This was our 3rd hotel stay of our trip so far and this hotel easily had the most comfortable beds we had slept in. The only reason I'm giving this hotel a 4 star instead of a 5 star is because the room was very dark, even with all of the provided lights on. I so appreciate their eco-conscious approach, but just a tad more lighting would've made a huge difference.

Yelp
The Sherwood is fantastic, the rooms are clean, well refurbished and have a great quirky flavor. Which is great as you will defiantly have a great night in the bar and need to stay. The food is brilliant I had a delicious half chicken and some veggies the potatoes are addictive the beers on tap are tasty as, it was great to find a bar in queenstown that serves real Nz beers and not just stuff from the big brewery's. But what makes this place is the staff, they really make you feel at home and super welcome.

Yelp
Maybe you don't want to stay right in Queenstown (it's raging busy) and the Sherwood is definitely not a bad drive in terms of distance from downtown QT, so not a bad choice there. It's easy to find when coming from the airport (of course, assuming you're rapidly getting used to driving on the left and not being distracted by the views), and there is a decent amount of parking near the rooms. However, the maintenance and organization of the place are... less than optimal. Our scheduled room was not ready at check in time, and was still not ready after we had ventured into Queenstown, grocery shopped (staff was quite helpful in providing directions), and returned. We were finally given a room that was ready, although not what we booked, that reeked of mold. The room is chilly (bedroom heater does not work), and awkwardly designed but manageable. The bathroom counter is made of laminate which has swollen in the constant damp (little to no ventilation throughout the room), and has obviously grown mold that was just sealed over every time. The shower is black plastic, with a black shower curtain, so the gloriously hot, rain style experience feels like returning to the womb. You will get to know your neighbors quite well, from their driving habits, to partying and bathroom habits, as well as gain insight into their everyday conversational drama as the walls are pretty thin. The wifi is slow but the mere option of free wifi is definitely a plus after some other places! Other pluses include a yoga studio with fairly cheap drop in classes ($10), the option of brown bag lunches made and delivered to your room for your next day of adventuring, and the option of organic milk for your tea =). Overall not bad, not great, but while you're in New Zealand you're unlikely to be in your accommodations all that much I should hope =)
