What To Do in Shibuya: Our Guide

"Generation after generation of young women have come to regard Shibuya 109 as a sort of nerve center. Architect Minoru Takeyama's iconic design has become synonymous with Shibuya itself, and the distinctive cylindrical design has been featured in myriad movies, music videos, anime, and manga." - Davey Young

Sadly this store isnt what it used the be.i was extremely sad. What a shame. Not much gyaru anymore more like punk , lolita or very young style.Prices are outrageous for clothes that are low quality ( think polyester) you can find the same or very similar on shien / wish /temu and even amazon for way cheapper.its made inchina clothes not made in japan pay attention to the inside tags . Some go for 100$ 200$ for made in china .Nothing extraordinary. The store is clean. The bathroom however are OLD OUTDATED AND FILTHY .Just overpriced cheap quality clothes overall very underwarmed .also keep on mind that everything is " free size" which is an m medium US . They dont have any smaller sizes being an xs i couldnt purchase ANYTHING . Clothes in japan are HUGE now . Very disapointed . The stores are also endlessly changing and heavily depends on tourist spending money there as regular japanese often dont . 109 are the remains of what use to be a golden fashion era early 2000s . Its basically more of a landmark at this point.its been poorly maintain and store have a hard time surving longer than a month in there . Plenty of better stores elsewhere in tokyo . Also keep in mind that most shops DONT SPEAK ENGLISH which is quite shocking since their major spenders are tourists . The place is SMALL and narrow even with multiple floors and you go around each pretty quick. This isnt really tourist friendly . Yes store will give you tax free because they jack up the price knowingly so you are not saving anything its not a place for good deals if you are looking to get a bang for your buck this isnt it . Dont believe the over hype on tik tok and insta .also the food court downstairs ( train station level ) is constantly changing . Stores are mainly pop up . No one buy food there because prices once again are outrageoys and you find the same stuff anywhere in shibuya or lil further way cheapper .you are paying premium because its 109 its a huge rip off .the food is also very unipressive and some of it taste just plain bad . Everuthing is loaded with chemical colorants and sugar i don't recommend eating there . Trying to open a pop store there even nust a week prices are exhorbitive and abusive which is why 109 is always loosing stores and got plenty of empty spots or store endlessly changing

Pretty decent place to shop. They had clothes, makeup, and accessory shops. It was a walkable distance from the Shibuya station, so that saved me time. It was a bit crowded, though.

Get your trendy Gothic Lolita fashions here. A tall building but there are escalators. Fast food restaurant further up the street.

A small mall with many boutiques selling fashionable clothings and accessories for the youth and young adults.

A great place to shop and pick up knick knacks if you are a young adult! Fun fashion stores, pop ups, jewellery shops, sanrio... Enjoyed it

Google
Fun place! There is so much around here, so I enjoy meeting foreigners here to give them a taste of night life, dinners, and shopping. As a rule, I typically avoid this area of town, but it is great for bringing your western friends.

Google
Place to shop for fashions ! especially women's fashion, you can also find 地雷系(jirai-kei) fashions as well. You can find shoes and boots that boost height by 5-10cm on b1, it's a really nice store! The restaurant is at the upper floor, there are also 1 unisex fashion on the upper floor that sells a bit vkei-ish vibe.

Google
Great clothing, not that many accesory-focused stores though. Still, it’s very much worth it and I recommend coming here if you’re looking for some recent trendy Japanese fashion! They have a variety of styles too. I would’ve bought everything I saw of if I wasn’t broke

Yelp
Shibuya109 was established in 1979 and to date is a trendy shopping destination geared towards women and fashionistas. There are 10 floors of shopping and dining. The boutiques within Shibuya109 are in a tight circular layout mainly accessed through its main escalator however there is an elevator located at the end of the building. Due to its compact size, it is fairly easy to get through all 10 floors. I tend to be a fast shopper and was able to go through all floors in an hour to scout out stores worth perusing. Every boutique caters to an aesthetic genre (Lolita, decora, goth, punk, traditional, street, ulzzang & cosplay) with various subgenres. Shibuya109 is every young trend-setter's dream providing plenty of options because if you're new to any of these genres you'll probably discover a style that is your jam. Although clothing is the predominant good sold, Shibuya109 doesn't focus solely on clothes. They also sell shoes, accessories, lingerie and they also have an onsite Sanrio shop. A lot of the stores offer clothes in "one size" basically translating to sizes between 00-4. Some boutiques cater to sizes outside this range however the selections are few and far between. In addition to that you'll have to dig deep for them and eyeball the fit. Due to the varied selections, there is a favorite boutique for any interested visitor. Over the years many stores and pop-ups have come and gone however the Liz Lisa brand has been around for a while and is worth checking out if you're into the girly Lolita vibe. As for Fall 2024 trends, I've noticed a lot of the popular styles worn were long flowy outfits and skirts. Lastly, pricing is decent but varies drastically between boutique and style. I was able to get a single outfit for $7000 yen ($46 USD) however there are some places that can go well over $10,000 + yen. Price is dictated by how elaborate and in demand the label is. Pro Tip for foreigners: Bring your passport when you shop in Shibuya. A lot of the stores including this one will provide up to a 10% discount on goods when you present your passport at the register. I didn't check to see if there was an onsite parking lot since most of Shibuya and the shopping districts surrounding them are easily accessible by foot. Shibuya109 is just a 10 minute walk from our hotel and 5 minutes from Shibuya station. If you're seeking the latest in feminine Japanese fashion come to Shibuya109.

Yelp
**June 2023** I came here looking for Secret Honey, a Japanese shop that produced some of my favorite cosplays. I found out that it was located inside this shopping mall and WOW this mall is every girls dream (and probably every straight boy's nightmare) lol. There were endless boutique shops with everything goth, lolita, girly, and street fashion. I did end up finding Secret Honey, but they no longer do Disney collaborations. Regardless, I visited a couple of other stalls and made some purchases to fill my closet. I'd love to come back and see what other Japanese trends look like in the future.

Yelp
JUST WOW!!!! This is "the holy place" of fashion for Japanese young people and tourist alike that want to get into fashion. I heard that world famous designers often come here and learn the trend and with that, the vibe shopping into Shibuya109 feels like you're in a well lit dance club with that extra "Untz... Untz.. Untz..." vibe compared to boring songs played at a typical mall if any at that. LOL! Also, folks here dress so nicely, and you should dress nicely if you want to go here, because you dress too simply, you might get depressed when you are exposed to the ambience of "109". Don't let the loud music deter you even though you don't understand it, but it can get into you and you start singing to some of the cheesy chorus. LOL! "Irraishai Maseeee", what ever that means, but I dig it. Bahahahha... Anyways, enjoy you guys! I hope this review helps you decide if you want to enter or not. I would take photos, but didnt want to violate the privacy of taking photos of other people. Although, I highly recommend to check this place out though. The reviews speaks for themselves. Namm sayinn...

Yelp
Oh Shibuya 109 haha where I spent all my money years ago...jk. It's a very nice shopping and quick bite Tower. You can't miss the building from the shibuya crossing. A huge tower with 109 in red. Each floor has plenty of stores and everything is super duper cute. Some places have deals, like if you buy a certain amount you get a gift or discount, etc. some places give discounts if you have your passport also. Top floors have some restaurants and cafes, not super good but decent. A good place to shop for cute clothes, shoes, accessories and even luggages.

Yelp
SO many floors of women apparel! Japan clothing is always trendy and how cool to walk several levels of floors filled with cute things! I purchased 3 hats which are made with good quality. Prices are okay depending on what you're purchasing.

Yelp
I could have thrown my money up in the air like confetti at "Shibuya 109." There were so many cute items I wanted to take home with me. However, my self-discipline game was strong and I didn't spend extravagantly. Honestly, if you are into Japanese fashion, you have come to the right place! It was my first visit, and surely it wouldn't be my last. I didn't really go to every store in the building. Instead, I went for the shops that I knew I would find something I liked. "Grandedge" on 3F had massive amount of accessories. I loved their earrings, though I had to ensure that they were for the pierced ears. I noticed many earrings were either clip-ons or the "screwed-in" types for some reasons. The prices weren't cheap, but hack! I said to myself "I'm in Japan, so you gotta treat myself, right?" I also paid great attention on what the mannequins wore. I got a long green lacy dress from "Libby and Rose" on 6F. The quality was good for the price I paid. Obviously, I shopped like an American. I was carrying the dress with me while I continued browsing the rest of the store. What I should do was to inform one of the sales associate that I would like the dress. She would go back to the stockroom and get me one that was unopened. Everything most stores had seemed to be just one size. With that being said, it would be wise to try the garment on prior to purchasing it, unless you were confident with the fit. I have a typical, standard-size Asian stature, so I was able to eye-ball how a particular item would look on me. Of course, there was no shortage of restaurants inside the mall. Restaurants and cafes were located on the top and on the basement floors. Hubby and I weren't hungry, so there was no need for us to stop in. I was able to use my Discover card at both stores. JCB, Visa, and Master cards are the popular credit card choices in Japan. I like Discover because I earn better perks and their customer service is US-based, yet it is not widely accepted in most Japanese merchants. I don't think there was anything for men. Another building dedicating to male fashion was nearby I believe. I had great fun in "Shibuya 109." I definitely have to make it back here to do some more financial damages!

Yelp
If you have been a fan of Japanese street fashion at some point in the last twenty years, you must make the trek here. Many of the famous visual kei, gothic lolita, fairy kei and gyaruu shops have boutiques here. Most shops have a strict no camera policy, but that doesn't seem to deter people, from what I noticed. The selection is pretty small in person, but most shops have online counterparts, so if you can't find the accessory, top of skirt you are looking for, check there as well. There are centrally located elevators on each floor, as well as guides in English and Japanese, so do not be afraid to ask. If you are a foreigner, find a store associate and just ask. I went for the Liz Lisa, WC and Wego shops. If you are headed to korea, bypass all the beauty shops, because there is a definite price spike for imports. There is also a cute cafe space, but it's super crowded and a little pricey, so I recommend you grab a bite at literally anywhere else surrounding the shopping plazas. You can reach 109 easiest via the Hachiko exit at Shibuya station, but the other ones work too, if you have some time to wander around.

Yelp
Typical shopping mall (clothes, makeup, shoes, bags, etc)--nothing too unique. We went in for about 5 minutes and left.

Yelp
109 is an iconic shopping center in Shibuya. The era of Egg and FRUiTS magazine, gyaru, lolita and more left a huge impression in my youth. My first time to Shibuya 109 was a dream come true as it was smack dab in the middle of these fashion eras. At the time, I couldn't afford the higher end brands that were famous enough to make their way to U.S. recognition for J-fashion fans. Returning as an adult, I was surprised to see that the building had appeared to fail with keeping up with timely renovations. Lots of items were outdated compared to current trends. Shibuya 109 has become a true tourist trap as I've found better, more current things elsewhere for a better price. Even the sample designs for gel nails looked to be low quality for the Shibuya-worthy price point. I've been to other 109 location that I've preferred. I still get excited to visit those department stores compared to the one in Shibuya. While I've gone there a number of times over the years, I don't have any inkling to return. If only the opulence of past trends returned so the iconic Tokyo fashion subgenres could return to their former glory! At least I have my Liz Lisa sun dress for nostalgia's sake.

Yelp
Look. I actually don't like shopping. From a girl until now, I dreaded going to the mall. I just hated browsing through thousands of uninspiring racks of generic looking mainstream clothes trying to come up with a style that fit me and my budget. But when I booked my trip to Tokyo, I knew I would be doing a lot of shopping. And I would have fun doing it! Shibuya 109 is 8 floors (+2 basement levels) of genuine Japanese fashion that makes my mouth drool. You can't find this stuff in the states. Be prepared to spend a few hours here. We left the boys next door and on their own. Some stores can be ultra-pricey, but there is plenty of mid-range as well as affordable fashion finds throughout the building. Fashion finds: Pair of pants, a jacket, a dress, plenty of leggings, and 2 pairs of shoes. I'm a happy shopper!
google avatar

Yelp
A girls dream! This place was levels and levels and levels of girl/women clothes, makeup, shoes, bags, you name it. I wish I would've been more prepared with time and money, because I could've spent a lot of both. There are all sorts of styles from the classic and trendy styles, a few harajuku stores, school girl outfits, stuff I'd wear to a rave, professional.. everything! And the shoes... I am so sad the sizes only went up to an 8 as I don't fit. The clothes as well are definitely smaller to size, too. But It is possible to find something. I can't wait to come back as this was an amazing place for the shopping lover to check out!
google avatar

Tori K.

Yelp
Was one of my favorite places to shop while in Shibuya. The demographic it is aiming for is definitely younger! Keep in mind that most brands carry only one size. They have popular brands like liz lisa & ankrouge. Things can get pretty pricey, but you are paying for good quality name brand clothes that can pretty much only be found in japan. Most stores will let you try stuff on. In dressing rooms dont forget to take your shoes off! One floor has purikura machines to take cute pictures! Has giant cake facades to sit on and take pictures on. If you do not speak japanese ask the girl at the counter for an english guide! Every employee at every store i went into was so sweet and helpful. In addition to clothing stores, they have make up, a cafe and even a sanrio. I love shopping at Shibuya109!

Yelp
Just a stepping stone from the famed Shibuya Crossing, Shibuya 109 is famous for trendy shops for young professionals, collectibles for the anime fans/otakus and other random finds. With about eight levels of stores side by side, it's basically shop til you drop or until everything just seems to blend together. It's a good spot to kill some time and absorb what's hot in Shibuya. In terms of fashion, the shops are very close to one another with a wall separating the stores. There are no storefronts, but it makes the shopping experience feel like an open flea market. Each floor is somewhat categorized by genre/type, so if you're feeling more professional or casual, they are just a floor away. Space is small, aisles can get crowded and there's a lot to absorb through sight and sound. Each shop basically had their own set list so you know you're in a different shop, even though they may look similar.
google avatar

Yelp
A popular destination for anyone looking for trendy pieces, Shibuya 109 is a department store with many small boutiques inside. Surprisingly, plenty of the boutiques have similar stuff - you'll find floral and lacy outfits, coupled with the casual grunge style with a modest flare. As of now, with summer approaching, skirts, platform sandals, body suits, and crop tops are all the rage. Maybe I just have bad luck, but I didn't really walk out with anything in particular except for stockings (cheap and huge selection). Almost all the clothes are one-size, and I am definitely on the shorter end. Half of the boutiques have quality garments, while the other half seemed like rebranded Forever21 goods. I did not see many foreigners here, which means this is a great spot for those interest in the gyaru or Mori Kei fashion styles. Pricing can be on the low to high end, but overall nothing ridiculous as I have seen similar pricing from fast fashion chains at my local malls. Some stores have deals on set pieces, such as a jacket plus a dress or pantsuit for a set price. You won't find international designer fashion house labels here, if that's what you're looking for. All the employees at each boutique has the same high-pitched voice when welcoming customers.

Yelp
The very famous Shibuya 109. My wife kept mentioning this spot for weeks before our Tokyo trip. Apparently, this is THE SPOT to shop. There are floors and floors of shops that will suit everyones needs. I wish they had more chairs for men to sit and rest but they don't. Depending on the store and how much you spend, you can get tax money back.
google avatar

Jaz C.

Yelp
Don't forget your passport at the hotel for the tax break! There is 8 floors of beautiful boutiques! A girls dream come true mall! The quality is good and the cashiers are very friendly and helpful! My favorite stores were swankiss and ankRouge. I was able to put together the sweetest ensemble! Happy shopping y'all !
google avatar

Yelp
Shibuya 109 is very different from Isetan and Lumine. It's eight stories of affordable Japanese style clothing! And yes, that includes over-the-top lolita-esque kawaii wear as well as Japanese chic. Very much trendy, but questionable quality. The female side much larger than male side, which is in a separate building. Each floor is comprised of mostly small shops. There is food on the upper floors. The shoppers are mostly teenagers or young adults. The sales staff are all dressed as per the trend of the shop. It seems like the majority of the people are just hanging out - with maybe a bag or two of purchases.

Yelp
Met up some girlfriends in Japan and decided to check out Shibuya 109. We met up on Monday, April 11th around 12:30pm. So many cute shops! It didn't take long to circle each floor, but this mall is really tall. I think it had something like 10 floors. Lots of cute clothing. The price point of most stores seemed more affordable than some of the higher end department stores we had been to. A few stores were even advertising sales. The top couple of floors aren't clothing oriented. More accessories and shoes. I remember the top floor having a cute sanrio store. Nice mall to check out if you wanna do some shopping. Just note the men's stores are in a different building down the street.
google avatar

Licca K.

Yelp
Holy grail of ladies shopping boutiques. Anywhere from sweet styles to more alternative there is a boutique for any style one can be looking for. Prices are as according to boutique prices, but you can definitely find some gems in here. This particular building is catered to the ladies, but across from it is the Shibuya Mens which the guys can find an equal amount of boutiques and shops catering to the newest trends and fashions. We came in here to search for a trench coat for my mom. Lots of cute selections and eventually we did find one she seemed to love albeit a little pricey I think she left happy with her choice. I know there were a few items I'd have loved to purchase myself. All in all, it's like a shopping mall with floor after floor of accessories and clothing from any and all styles under the sun.
google avatar

Bonnie T.

Yelp
Super disappointed... Practically everything in this mall (Women's side) is one size. This means everything is medium and being a small petite woman, I cannot fit anything! All clothes are super cute but unfortunately, I am an xs... Be prepared to spend 2 hours in this mall. There are many floors and it gets really busy!

Yelp
I walked in to Shibuya 109 with my puffy jackey, some khakis, a Niner's hat, and a pair of bright blue Adidas sneakers. I even cuffed my pants to show off the strength of my sock game. On any other day, I would have taken selfies every 10 minutes to salute my own refined sense of fashion. But compared to the trendy extravaganza that is Shibuya 109, my outfit suddenly felt like it was thrown together by my Granny :'( 109 is essentially an ocean of the women fashion dispersed into 10 levels of a building that overlooks the Shibuya Crossing. A myriad of kawaii salesgirls dressed in the trendiest outfit are cocked and ready to reel in any vogue-seeking customers swimming past their fashion aquarium. With only the latest items in stock, these stores are poised to make someone as stylish as myself feel incredibly dated. But the beauty of 109 is that it is very affordable. With just a handful of Yen, a girl could fast forward her outfit from Rachel Green to Robin Scherbatsky in a matter of hours. Considering their competitive prices, the quality of the product unsurprisingly takes a back seat. A blouse may count itself lucky if its lifetime exceeds 3 washes, which is actually sufficient because it will already be fashionably-obsolete by the second wash. This vicious cycle of fashion is a nightmare for an environmentalist, but it is an absolute dream for a consumer culture such as Tokyo. The shopping experience is a marvel in itself. The volume of the music is uncharacteristically high for a shopping center. With the help of some strobe lights, 109 can pass for a lightweight rave. Each store blasts its own music without regards to anyone and thus there were many times where I had TayTay to my left ear and Kaskade to my right. All of this helps to amp up the shopper. Once the blood starts flowing, the wallets will start coming. Even I almost bought something myself when I saw a girl DJing for a store and this is a women's shopping center. Shibuya 109 is no Paris Fashion Week, or even Harajuku, for that matter. But it is the real deal for artists who expresses themselves through dresses and scarves, skirts and blouses. Their body is the canvas, and 109 has all the paint.
google avatar

Christina C.

Yelp
I have been to Shibuya 109 before. I thought 109 would be more suitable for Japanese girls, but this time it's different. I bought some Lolita style dresses for 50% off! What a crazy deal. The sales there don't really speak Japanese. I communicated with them with my limited Japanese. Later on, one of the sales who speaks English came to rescue. I had a wonderful time trying on their dresses and buying a few of them there. Their service was excellent, and the styles are Japanese exclusive! I will definitely come back to get more dresses in my next Tokyo trip! Other than 109, there's also a Men's 109 across the street too!

Yelp
Shibuya 109 is a shopping mall geared to affordable and trendy young women's fashion. It consists 10 floors (including 2 basement floors) of women's fashion, accessories and gift shops. It's great for hours and hours of shopping. You'll get an interesting overview of Japan's (fast) fashion trends. However, the quality of the products is a bit cheap. There's also a men's Shibuya 109 nearby if your significant other feels bored out of his mind at the idea of hours and hours of shopping at a women's mall.

Yelp
We arrived in Tokyo on January 2nd, and wanted to partake in the post-New Year's sale shopping. We decided to check out Shibuya109, and it was just pure craziness. Every floor was packed people shopping, and all the store salespeople were screaming at the top of their lungs about the deals they were having. Definitely a bit overwhelming and I got tired after only a few floors. The layout does make it quite easy to shop though. Although there are many floors, there are only a few stores per floor. You can walk in a circle and see every store. Of course, you probably won't check out every store, as there are a variety of different styles available. In general, the stores are pretty affordable, although some more than others. Overall, Shibuya109 felt like a one-stop-shop, and we felt like we had shopped enough just by going through here.

Yelp
This is a perfectly curated artisan collection! Are you looking for hand crafted sake glasses? Hand dipped and dyed fabrics? Carved by hand bamboo spoon? They have everything and then some. A truly unique and beautiful location to purchase beautiful items, while supporting local artists in Tokyo. Prices range, so there is something to be found by everyone! I highly recommend!

Yelp
I love this place! Fashions and accessories range from punk rock to the girliest frill. Mostly a place for females to enjoy. Brought my guy friends here once and they were lost. 7 floors of amazement.

Yelp
Great shopping!! 8 stories of shops for you to shop to your hearts content. Each store has a different style and fashion concept, so you'll definitely find something you like. The shop keepers are very helpful and super polite and friendly. Service is excellent. If you come on a rainy day, they even wrap up your paper bag for you so it doesnt get wet. Wow. Always my first stop to shop!

Yelp
If you're a female aged 15 and above.. You must check out this place!! There's so much clothing options! They're reasonably priced too. But as you go up the floors, I noticed that the prices started going up as well. At each shop, the sales staff are all dolled up to represent the shop's fashion style and the girls are all super cute and hand out flyers to you. They also have free shibuya wifi that you can get from the main counter on the ground floor, don't miss it. It's a small information counter that we grabbed an English map of shibuya from. Some shops have a tax free logo that means you get your tax rebate on the spot, others don't. Do take note that there is a minimum expenditure to achieve the tax rebate. For men.. You can also checkout the 109 men which is a separate building or come in here with a girl or lady friend to check out the newest fashion for her! And pick out a present for her!!!!! :) Nonetheless a great place to keep up to date with the latest fashions in japan! I would definitely hit this place up again, the next time I'm in japan! I could see myself spending hours walking into every shop :)

Yelp
Super fun shopping tower. My daughters had so much fun shopping here. The great thing is that the clothing is in our sizes and so are the shoes! From the time you walk in to the top floor, you'll have a lot of fun in the little shops/boutiques. Shibuya 109 is known for its trendy clothes and some say that this is where people come for trending outfits and shoes. What a great place for teens to shop. The prices are amazingly reasonable :) We look forward to returning here again.
google avatar

Laura L.

Yelp
This is like Forever21 on steroids! Floors and floors of clothing for younger set, the whole building dedicated to women on one side and the men's in another building. Parents, lets your teens shop while you wait on restaurant level, love it!

Yelp
Have you ever went shopping in what felt like a well lit dance club? Well, this is what shopping in 109 feels like. LOUD LOUD music, screams of "irraishai maseeee", more make up, fake eyelashes and tight clothes than you might see in and actual club in Roppongi... wow. I would go here for the experience of WOW. But, if you actually want to shop and enjoy your shopping experience, I recommend finding a place that won't leave you with a splitting headache and ringing in your ears.

This place is good for shopping and checking out the latest Japanese street fashion like gyaru, oshare (happy go lucky), and others. It was interesting to see at least. But as a guy, I must warn other guys only go in there when you have a female to accompany you or else you elicit looks. Not that I had that problem but yeah :) As for the Shibuya 109 for men's, it was okay didn't really find anything I liked.

Yelp
If your looking for the latest trend. You should definitely stop by here. allot of the clothes has ribbon bows. I would consider the trend more baby doll style..

Yelp
Do not think people come here to shop maybe socialize but no shopping. Well: there are lots of small shops that are selling close, accessories nothing to my test or to my wife's test. We shop plenty but couldn't find something that we liked.
