Kobe beef comes from a specific strain of Wagyu cattle in Hyogo Prefecture, and is regulated by strict standards in Japan. This isn't really accessible to me in the US, so I was determined to try it while in Tokyo.
There was a Kobe beef restaurant in the same building as our hotel, but our schedule and timing didn't work out for us to try it. We were in the Shibuya area and it was our last night, so time was running out. I was trying to find a spot on Google maps nearby and I think Nate and I actually just walked by this place. We walked in and were seated right away at the counter. I would recommend a reservation, though.
The Kobe options included sirloin, filet, chateaubriand, and emperor briand. You can order either 110g or 220g (although the menu states if you want more than 220g to let them know). Nate and I both opted for 110g of the sirloin, at 16,280 yen each (about $104USD per person). Pretty pricey, but for a special meal (and our last dinner in Tokyo), it was worth it. They also have Kobe sashimi and seafood options, as well as a full bar.
You get to watch them prepare the beef on the flat top. They really just lightly sear it and serve it with some veggies and assorted sauces. I was initially worried that it wouldn't be enough as 110g is only about 4 ounces, but once I had the first bite, my worries went away. This was the most decadent, tender, rich, and melt in your mouth meat I've ever had in my entire life. As a steak lover, this was an absolute dream. It's so rich that it was the perfect portion. Any more would have been way too much for me.
I'm so glad I got the chance to eat this delicacy, but also sad that I probably won't have it again until I go back to Japan. And honestly, I would go back to Japan just for this. Do not miss trying Kobe beef if you like steak. It will blow your mind!
