We came here after the Foster botanical garden for some cooling dessert. I only knocked down a star because I wish they have more toppings. The people behind the counter are very friendly. You can pick up to 3 flavors for at least the keiki size I know.

Rick Takeshita

Google
Sadly to see them go from my neighborhood, but without the ube ic or the haupia cream topping I dunno why I would go anymore, wish them all the luck in Kapolei, hopefully they keep up their stock n improve the service at the ordering register with more Aloha🤙

STEVETTE “E V”

Google
This is a family own business and they ARE THE BEST IN TOWN BY FAR!! WE GO THERE ALL THE WAY FROM EWA BEACH. CAN'T WAIT TILL THEY ARE IN KAPOLEI!! the people who work here are generations of history is this store and shave ice and POPCORN IS ONO!! Just look at my shave ice, gone already👍👍👍😂😂😂

Google
Shimazu Store is a small family business known for their shaved ice and small goodies!! You can order straight from the window with variety of flavors and add one (vanilla ice cream, mochi pieces, red azuki beans, condensed milk, etc.) There is also very limited street parking. They have two sizes: Keiki (kid) and Small. FYI, the small size is a huge portion.

K

Google
It’s one of the best shave ice places on the island. The ice is soft and they have so many flavors, stuffings, and toppings to choose from. The staff are friendly and it’s decently priced. Parking can be tricky, but you can always park at Foodland and walk down. This place is a must if you want real Hawaiian shave ice.

Google
Delicious shave ice, a small is only $6.50 and was just right to share with my wife. You are able to get 3 different flavors. If I was to get my own I would probably get the kid size but it's only 50 cents less. You might as well get the small size instead. They also don't skimp on the syrup. I like Waiola Shave ice there ice seems to be bit finer but they don't give you as much ice and aren't as generous with their syrup. I just found our new shave ice shop.

Kevin

Google
Came for shaved ice and ordered a small. Even the small size is pretty big. Was pretty good and the staff was very nice! The flavor I had was rainbow with condensed milk which was a lot of different ones but not sure about the exact ones

Trenton Bloom

Google
Sooooo tasty! Glad this place was recommended to me after moving into the area, all of the flavors I've tried have been delicious

Yelp
Brought my girls to the Liliha location since this store will be relocating to the west side. We arrived 15 minutes before closing and Eunice greeted us with a smile. She was very friendly and helpful. I ordered the halo halo and honestly it is way better than Magnolia's. The girls shared a small shave ice which was huge. Sad to hear the store will be leaving the Liliha area! I'll definitely check out the new location

Yelp
I am quite surprised with the high reviews at Shimzau. Decided to stop by since it was on the way back to the hotel. Small storefront only with one bench outside for seating, otherwise, you'll have to stand or take it elsewhere. Upon arriving, there were two ladies working at the store. One was towards the back making the shaved ice while another was talking to a customer, not even acknowledging us standing there.. We waited for about 5 minutes before we were acknowledged by the other lady who was previously making the shaved ice to take our order. Prices are very reasonable as we ordered two smalls for ~$12. The small is sizable and even comes with a straw for when the ice starts to melt. Unfortunately, this is shaved ice was not the best we've had on the island. The ice was standard "ice" and not the soft fluffy ice. The syrups were also very artificial in taste and not made with fresh ingredients like other shaved ice spots. Will not return nor recommend.
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
Always good flavors. Try the cream flavors like ceme brûlée, I've cream, and strawberry cream! Such a shame about the parking. Last check in before they close this location.

Yelp
Remembering the original Shimazu store and the wonderful times we had... we are excited to see the new location...

Yelp
After exploring, Bishop Museum, my family and I decided to get some shave ice. And where else would we go besides Shimazu store! There was no line so that was really nice and we were able to get street parking right next to the store. We got 2 Keiki cups and a regular size. They had so many flavors to choose from, I was glad there was no line behind us so I could take my time. The staff member who is working was super friendly and patient with us. I was able to get Azuki beans which are my favorite as well as condensed milk. I have heard so many great stories of this place, and was very pleased with my dessert! We sat on the bench right in front and enjoyed our shave ice.

Yelp
Can we please celebrate all small and local businesses? Whenever I'm driving down School Street, this is the spot that I'm always tempted to visit even when the weather is junk outside. Shimazu never disappoints as a family run business that has the extra charming feeling that holds quality experience and quality ingredients. This place is surely one of da kindest kine, so friendly, fast, and family forward :)

Yelp
Usually when we are in Waikiki on vacation, we drop by the Castle Street location but decided to check out the one on N School as we were closer to that one at the time. Its off the H1 on the corner of N School Street and Frog Lane. Now there isn't a parking lot like the other location so you'd have to do street parking here. Not a big deal since we have been twice and street parking is pretty easy that times we have gone. There is a nice selection of flavors for shaved ice just make sure you follow the directions on ordering when you get there by letting them know how many you want, sizes, if you'd want anything on the bottom, toppings and flavors. Other than the usual shaved ice, they also do Halo Halo! Nobody could agree on flavors to share so we all got our own. The one I ordered was a small with vanilla ice cream on the bottom, flavors were ube cream, guava, and I think it was melon cream. On a warm day, it was an enjoyable visit having some legit shaved ice that was nice and soft. None of that hard shaved ice stuff. Flavorings added to our shaved ice was generous and fully covered. We all topped ours with condensed milk which makes it even better! There aren't tables outside but they do have a bench you can sit out on and enjoy your cool, sweet treat! The person assisting us was quick taking the orders and getting them out there. I've been to many shaved ice places but Shimazu is definitely one of the best! I was so happy that they had an ube cream flavored syrup as I've never seen it before and its delicious! Prices are reasonable too. If you happen to be in that area or even the one off of Castle Street, give them a try if you haven't yet!
google avatar

Sandra X.

Yelp
I got a large shaved ice for $7 with ice cream at the bottom (+$1.50) and haupia drizzle on top (+$1.25). It does get a bit pricey with all the add-ons, but it was a refreshing treat for a hot, humid day. The shaved ice was soft and enjoyable. You can choose up to 3 flavors, and they were very generous with the syrup. It was probably a bit too much for me, as it pooled at the bottom of the bowl shortly after receiving it, making it too sweet for my taste. Still, I appreciate that they don't skimp on the flavor. You place your order at the store-front counter, and there's a small bench you can sit on after you get your shaved ice. The workers are efficient, and the service is quick.
google avatar

Karen T.

Yelp
Well, I haven't been here in years! Shave Ice has gotten fancy with a lot of add ons and costs a lot more but so worth it every once in awhile. The girl was so sweet and patient with us old folks who didn't know what we wanted.
google avatar

Doug L.

Yelp
We parked along School Street and walked up to the counter. We ordered the medium shave ice with mochi balls. Additional bottom add-in choices were ice cream and azuki beans. Topping included condensed milk, li hing powder or haupia. Flavor choices were the last step with over 70 to pick from. We just sat on the bench out front to eat our shave ice which was typical for many of the shave ice places. Other customers who parked right in front just ate in their cars. Overall the shave ice was powdery and soft. The orange cream and ube flavors were great choices as they were very distinct and spot on flavors. Unfortunately these two flavors overwhelmed red watermelon but it was still good. Mochi balls were actually squarish but was soft and chewy. A nice refreshing afternoon snack and our favorite shave ice spot this trip.
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
I've been coming here since I was little, and love it just as much now as I did then. Get the Ube with the condensed milk and ice cream on the bottom, I promise you it's the best combo. I'm sad they are moving shop, but know they will thrive at the new Kapolei location!
google avatar

Sammi L.

Yelp
Shimazu is our go-to for shave ice in Honolulu. I grew up going to Waiola, Matsumotos and other spots, and I think nothing rivals the quality/quantity of Shimazu. Staff are always quick despite the lines. Know that there isn't any seating, but we're always happy to pop a squat on the curb with our cups. It's a spot you might miss walking down the street, but highly recommend for the perfect hit of shave ice, flavor saturated throughout (no un-syruped dry spots of ice here!)
google avatar

Palak G.

Yelp
As expected..good shaved ice. A lil too sweet and each topping is extra charge. But give it a try for a sweet and cool treat!
google avatar

Vance N.

Yelp
Shimazu has always been my favorite shaved ice spot on the island. I've visited every time I've come to Hawaii to see my family so it has a special spot in my heart. Its family owned and all their syrups are homemade, every time I eat the shaved ice it always reminds me of good times as a kid. I'll always prefer Shimazu over the other well known shave ice places on the island and you can't change my mind. For some actual useful information: Metered parking only on the street, or you could try your luck at the foodland a block down. (Not responsible for anything if you choose to park there but I've done it before). They also have another location on Castle Street near Rainbow Drive in.
google avatar

Val H.

Yelp
Great place to get your shave ice fix. They have snacks and popcorn but the shave ice seems to be the popular item for both young and old. The workers are efficient and service is quick. This place is located on a busy street. There is a small bench to sit on but a lot of people just stand, talk story and eat their shave ice. thumbs
google avatar

Violet B.

Yelp
We move to come here and get shave ice. It's perfectly showered with syrup. Parking is difficult; just hang nearby with one driver in the car.
google avatar

Denby R.

Yelp
This classic shave ice place is a secret treasure. The flavors are very consistently good and the portions are more than generous. A keiki is too big for me! There was a time when there was a Larry which is literally larger than your head. No matter how big of a head you have. The service is still as great as it was years ago...even with a younger generation of employees. The atmosphere is exactly what you would expect to sea from a counter by the road. It's a counter by the road. And don't expect fancy and glittery. But delicious and refreshing for sure. This place is probably my favorite shave ice on island. Parking is tricky for the street and small side lot. But worth it. The kids are fans and so are the adults. This is a cross-generational icon.

Yelp
Haven't been here in years since I moved, decided to make an effort to visit! Prices gone up since I last been here. Small is $7 and a large is now $9.75 also saw shave ice to go for $6.75 don't get this confused! I thought this was the old style where they put he shave ice in the big plastic holder. Nope, they now serve the shave ice in a bowl and just cover it too and bottom and tape it. That threw me off, but that's my fault I should of asked and not assumed. Came here on New Year's Eve 1/31/2023 and was a great way to end the year. Shout out to the girl who took our order and made it smooth.
google avatar

Jeanie L.

Yelp
My first visit here and the lady working was so friendly and patiently waited for me when I became overwhelmed with the amount of flavors they have. Their portion is very generous too. We ordered the keikei size and it was big enough to share between two people. We got mochi which I probably wouldn't order again because it turned hard under all the ice. Overall very refreshing and satisfying on a hot and sunny day. Only thing is I wished they had more seatings because a family took up the bench outside so I had to stand by the side under the sun which made my shaved ice melt faster.
google avatar

Angel H.

Yelp
This is my son's favorite shave ice spot. He always wants to come here. It's a bit of a challenge, since they don't have parking. You just have to chance it with street parking. I can see why he likes this place. They have a lot of different syrups that you can choose from. The ice is shaven down like snow. It's smooth, airy and light. I know he tries different flavors all the time, but he likes lychee and cotton candy.
google avatar

Ryssa E.

Yelp
When I tell you I LOVE shave ice I mean it I L O V E shave ice! This little hole in the wall location is perfect for stopping by for an afterschool snack! The sizes are amazing for the price and you get to choose any flavor combinations you want! The only thing is that since it's a little hole in the wall place there's no place to really sit down and enjoy but there is street parking along the same road. I always enjoy eating shave ice in the sun since it makes it taste more refreshing! Overall service is ALWAYS great! The people are always so nice and they always make sure that its first come first serve no matter the order so no one is ever waiting really long for their order since they don't prioritize the " smaller" or "easier orders first" definitely come here if your in the area! They have more than just shave ice so it's a perfect local snacks shop place any day!
google avatar

Yelp
Always passed by Shimazu store on N.School St. but haven't stopped. One main reason no parking so that's why I just double park real quick in front of store . I've been hooked on this ice pops for awhile and just to let you know if you want a particular flavor you need to call In Advance because they only carry mix flavors. I like their strawberry and Banana flavor . It almost taste like a shaved ice in a ice pop form . Also to let you know if you can make it at there location on N. School St. also you can find their ice pops @ Fujiya Mochi . Support local friendly staff and good service
google avatar

Janey T.

Yelp
This is the first shimazu location and I've been going here with my grandparents since I was a kid. Don't be fooled by the small storefront. There's an endless amount of flavors to choose from when it comes to your shave ice. Your eyes might be bigger than your stomach! The small is so big and I tend to get full before finishing it. I'd recommend getting the keiki size. The staff is always friendly as this is a family run business! The only downside is that they have unusual hours. I'm going to be bringing my friends from out of town to try this spot! Make sure to support local!
google avatar

Yelp
Came back again this past week and I have to say it was extremely disappointing. Metered street parking, luckily not too far away. One guy was just working there by himself, kinda felt bad for him, he was very nice. But the price is ridiculously expensive. I got Passionfruit, Lychee, and Fuji Apple. The Fuji Apple literally tasted like a dirty old rag or sewage water. It was gross. Not sure if they didn't clean the bottle or wiped it with an old rag but it was inedible. After spending $8 on water with a syrup on it, it's very disappointing to have to throw a third of it away after being repulsed by the taste. Other than the Fuji Apple tasting gross and dirty, all the flavors really tasted the same, disappointing. I don't think I would return here as there are better more consistent places around.

Yelp
Today, it was a quiet afternoon, to one of the better known Shave ice Shops on the Island. The service is always good & what ever flavor(s)you choose for your treat, you won't be disappointed! The store is simple, as in past years, you could go inside the store, today you stand on the side wall & order. They have various Hawaiian snacks & fresh popcorn on the inside for sale. Simply shop ambiance but effective way of serving their customers. No benches to sit, & prices are up there! Still a treat you have to get, to get a Brain freeze! Parking today on the street was ample, I feel sorry on the weekends!
google avatar

Jace T.

Yelp
Is it hot today? Need something to cool you down in town? Shaved Ice will do the trick. Check out Shimazu Store on School St. and right after Frog Ln. Only street parking hea, so please be mindful and respectful of where you park. They only have a store front, where you order and pickup your goodies, so standing room only but the reward is sooo worth it! As a kid, I loved the rainbow flavored cones, but now you have nearly 50 flavors to choose from and maybe put condensed milk, li hing power or haupia on top, and/or ice cream underneath as other optional toppings. Flavor and topping combos are endless. Pick what grabs your eye and pallet and try my 3 to 1 combo... scoop, scoop, scoop, slurp! If you slurp too much you'll get ice left towards the end ;). TIll my next visit, Grind On, Pau!
google avatar

Misty H.

Yelp
Hope they NEVER close this OLD SCHOOL gem ...rainbow shave ice with li hung topping ...or green tea and mango with ice cream bottom and cream drizzle top...ALL SO TUMMY yummy!!
google avatar

Helen H.

Yelp
The Shimazu Store's Shave Ice is great, very fine shaved ice with LOTS of flavors to choose from! Add some Azuki Beans with vanilla ice cream and it's the BEST refreshing touch to cool you down on a hot day! Check out when they're open! Reminds me of "small kid time"!
google avatar

Kim B.

Yelp
Just yum. I already reviewed them and my 5 star don't go away. I did get these pops and that's a new thing to me. Takes me back to childhood times with ice pops. They flavors are just like eating shaved ice. I also learned that they do cater for parties. Would love that. Can you imagine a summer wedding with Shimizu shaved ice???? Yes pls. Service is always impeccable and everyone is so bubbly and happy. Love my shaved ice!!
google avatar

Arlene L.

Yelp
We come here whenever we are in the area, it has great shave ice and big serving sizes. The syrups are good flavor and they soak the ice so it tastes good. The ice is fine and smooth. It's a solid place for a delicious cool refreshing treat!
google avatar

Tiffany C.

Yelp
Wooow! This place puts shaved ice from California to shame. I've never had anything quite like it. It reminds me of fresh fallen soft snow! After you have shave ice from here, other places simply don't satisfy. I can't believe I had missed out all my life. Perfect for a hot day and there r plenty of hot days in hawaii :)! We got a mixture of flavors and they are very generous with their sizes as well as the syrup! I hate it when I don't have enough syrup to adequately coat my ice but this place gives you plenty. My very fav was the melon bar cream flavor! Soooo good and exactly like the Melona bars! Looks like a small mom and pop shop so it makes me happy to support. I personally like it better than the more "famous" shave ice places and think it has better flavors. Can't wait to come back when in the area again.
google avatar

Reiko S.

Yelp
Owner is super nice & friendly! Popcorn is fresh made to order! They sell a lot of local snacks like prune mui etc. The mochi they put in their shave ice is homemade! They will be opening a location in Kapolei soon!
google avatar

Lloyd C.

Yelp
Our search for good shaved ice leads us here. Before the pandemic, you could walk into the narrow small store. Now, it's blocked off, and you order outside behind a plexiglass. This was the first place that I saw the shaved ice come out with a vibrant plastic cone holder. How fun! So, seeing as this was my 3rd shaved ice place, I wanted to try some different flavors. Most of you will be grossed out because these flavors do not go together, but I had tried the fruity flavors at the other stores. I got mine with root beer and melon bar melon as these were unique flavors I only saw here. Great feathery and finely powdered shaved ice. The handcrafted syrups really stood out. The root beer was rich and sweet. The melon bar was light and fruity. They tasted great separately, but in the end, when it all blended together, it was funky. LOL. I recommend the ice cream and azuki beans. The shaved ice is tall. My wife and I got in the car, and she said, "What happened to your shaved ice!?!" I looked and said, "What are you talking about?" Apparently, I knocked half of it off in the car with my seat belt. D'oh! Good thing it's a rental. Parking can be challenging! There is only street parking on this narrow and busy street. I had to circle a couple of times around the block before I found a space.
google avatar

B G.

Yelp
What a fun place! Great young man making the shave ice. Had 3 Keiki ones with ice cream and condensed milk. Delicious flavors and great size!
google avatar

Kat T.

Yelp
Still good stuff to me. Love the flavors and I really like the new to me that is huapia cream on top. Next time I'm gonna add more of that cream. My sons usual at any place is something blue or root beer. He loves it. They only serve kids and small size for now.
google avatar

Aron N.

Yelp
OK OK. People have been telling me about this place and I never went because of no parking.... Well this time I hit the blinkers and waited while my lovely wife went and got my the ice shave (that's right!) that I wanted. I was amazed at big the "small" was. It was amazing and it was tasty! The Azuki beans and ice cream and mochi was so nice and the shave ice (OK there I did it!) was probably the best "regular" ice shave I have ever had. The only thing I could find was that it was really sweet overall, but the taste was spectacular! I declare this the best standard shave ice I have had. However, I consider Wailoa shave ice something different due to the extremely fine ice shave. Almost like ice cream..... But Shimazu wins for regular shave ice. EXCELLENT and guess what?? If I drive a little down the road, there's more parking.....
google avatar

Norbee F.

Yelp
I heard a lot of good things about this place. This place is a small little hole on a wall and is located on a main road near the side of the freeway. It can easily be missed due to its location especially it being a one way street. Parking is a little hard and there's not really a place to sit down and eat. But the shave ice is what's really important. My kids love Haleiwa shave ice but takes us an hour to drive there. But this place is literally 10mins away. Big plus for me. Little higher price then I'm used to but the portions are generous. So much flavors to choose from and a lot of toppings to add on. And it seems that they sell halo-halo to. That's another plus for me. I got a small and it was more then enough for me and my wife with 3 kids. The service was great nothing to say about it.

Gerri B.

Yelp
I got a kid size and it was still big!! Absolutely worth the stop and it's next door to the Rainbow Inn!
google avatar

Craig Y.

Yelp
Located off N School St in Honolulu. Very small store no parking lot and street parking is tough as well. I got the POG flavor which was passion orange guava. The small size in a bowl was huge. The shave ice was yummy but it was too much for me since we just ate before I probably could of finished it on an empty stomach. The staff was great and friendly. Overall the shave ice was yummy and flavorful.
google avatar

Eileen S.

Yelp
Favorite of my husband, but this time I think altered his opinion a little. I just wanted regular shaved ice, but we didn't realize the change that came with the "no plastic" law. All table wear in these types of establishments are now paper or some eco-friendly version. This basically mean the shaved ice came in single paper bowls. Not even double bowls to try and keep them sturdier longer. Melting flavored ice in paper bowls. Of course they immediately melted with this heat and humidity. Kids and car were basically wet and flavor stained within 5 minutes and the juice was dripping, no spilling, everywhere. Strawberry tasted weird. Not as good as Matsumoto's, but hubby and the kids liked it. Maybe we'll bring our own containers and switch them out as soon as we get them. Lol. It was a 1 and done for me though.
google avatar

Cat •.

Yelp
5/5 This place is amazing! Very cute kawaii vibes. It's a little hole in the wall near the school. Parking is a bit hard to find (street), but it is WORTH it. The lady that helped us was very kind and friendly. The shaved ice was so massive, I got the kids size and split it between me and two other people. (The photo does not do the size justice)
google avatar

Crystal L.

Yelp
Wanted to bring my niece for shaved ice and went to Shimazu because *childhood memories* She wanted a rainbow and we got a small to share between 3 of us, with ice cream and condensed milk. It wasn't sunny out and no line towards closing! Once we got our shaved out, it started leaking juice. Took the picture right after they handed it to us. It was all over our hands and slippers 30 seconds later. Think there was waaay too much syrup on ours. The couple in front of us ate theirs in their car, but there was no way we could move without dripping everywhere. It was not the most enjoyable experience and very sticky. Employee was nice and they even gave an Easter egg to my niece!
google avatar

Lan F.

Yelp
This little hole in the wall is great for a refreshing treat. Keiki size satisfies me, and the flavors are plentiful! Li hing pickled mango? strawberry colada? lilikoi passion? onolicious!! I got the creamy haupia on top too. There was no wait, and no problem parking today (sometimes can be iffy). I wish there was a bench to sit on. The sun can beat relentlessly, too. But I like da ice!
google avatar

Ryan O.

Yelp
We came here since Waiola had no parking. The shave ice quality has gone down since the last time we came here and the service is extremely slow. The shave ice isn't as fine as before and it's def on the icier side now. We will stick to Waiola
google avatar

Gaison O.

Yelp
Best shaved iced period end of story. Ice consistency is on point, not too fine and not too thick. Syrups are homemade and delicious, they don't use the cheap sugary stuff. Parking can be tricky at times, but worth the walk if you have to.

Beth P.

Yelp
Amazingly delicious shave ice. Seriously. We just visited Oahu and I used Yelp to search by top rated places and Yelp did not disappoint. The shave ice here is so soft and melt in your mouth goodness and the flavors are so good. I got ube cream, coconut, and mango. If ever in Oahu, I highly highly recommend this place

Yelp
Review #1 for 2023. Gotta love an old school shave ice shop! The service at Shimazu's is great, and the workers are nice. The service at some other shave ice places has really gone downhill, which is sad, since shave ice is supposed to feel like childhood and a reminder of home and the culture of Hawaii. Shimazu's still has a family feel to it. Shimazu's has a small store front, and you order from outside. Lots of great flavors to choose from, and we enjoyed all of the ones we tried. I love the one timey feel of the sign above the store. $6 for a keiki size bowl, but that would be an extra large in a lot of other places. I shared a keiki, and it was more than enough for two of us. Only street parking available. There's a sign that says not to block other driveways. We were lucky that there was parking right up front!

Yelp
My fave and go to shave ice when im back home..the best shave ice in town. First time i tried their Ube Cream and Key Lime..soo ONO
google avatar

Jackie M.

Yelp
This is my family's favorite shave ice place and they take us there every time we visit. Obviously, I haven't tried everywhere on the island, but I can confirm, it's really good! As others mention, parking can be a problem and there's no where to eat. In terms of the local experience, parking issues is spot on. Embrace the chaos and park illegally while someone else orders. The keiki size was plenty to share between one kid and one adult. Probably could've done stalls, but it melts fast!
