Came here on a Sunday evening at 8 o’clock and there was no wait. Service was great and the food was amazing. One of the guests ordered teriyaki chicken which was “just” okay. Definitely recommend ordering sushi instead.

Google
The food was really good the staff very friendly and polite I love the atmosphere they even had old Japanese movies playing in the wall. I recommend this place 100%.

Google
Absolutely amazing. The uni was some of the freshest I’ve ever had silky, briny, and melting like butter on the tongue. Every piece of sushi was crafted with care, the rice perfectly seasoned and the fish cut like art. This isn’t just sushi, it’s an experience. You can taste the quality and intention in every bite. A few moments even made me light up with an excited smile.

Google
I've been coming here since I first moved to Los Angeles around 2015 and absolutely love it! Hannah is the best and she has smile that warms your soul. The food is amazing,, awesome lunch specials, and very unpretentious but pleasant atmosphere where I bring my dates.. Thank you Shintaro!

Google
The best sushi place in town ! I had a special birthday night with my friends. It my first time here, I'm so happy finally to try here. Service very friendly & Chef very professional! The best plate for tonight is Sea urchin sushi very fresh and so sweet . Hokkaido rolls was unexpected! So delicious. All the sashimi are very fresh and the way that they cut is the perfect slices, It will be on my favorite place for sushi.

Google
Don’t let the outside fool you, the inside has nice lighting and a really enjoyable atmosphere. The food is excellent! We had miso (above average), the green beans (spectacular), and a verity of different sushi (all of it prepared perfectly and with attention to detail. The prices are reasonable and the service was very good. We highly recommend if you’re in the area looking for a meal!

Google
Been coming here for years, and I can confidently say it’s the best sushi in LA. Half the price than the higher end spots in the city with far fresher sushi. Koti is the sweetest— really their entire staff are great! 10/10

Google
Nice price/value relation, the lunch specials hit the spot. Just make sure you order your nigiri without wasabi, otherwise it comes with it.

Yelp
I had an amazing time at Shintaro. The service here is excellent so you'll love the environment. The ambience they created with the silent movies & lighting is so relaxing. To top everything off the food here is also so delicious. I can't wait to come back !!

Yelp
Shintaro is quaint and cozy. Hannah was a lovely and personable waitress and attended to me well. The service was relatively fast, and the food is fresh. That being said, I would say that the food is largely forgettable. It's a nice place if you need a quick bite to eat, as there is a lot of parking space in their lot, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here as it's on the pricier side relative to the value offered. Spicy Scallop Cut Roll ($15.95) Rating: 4.2/10 - The scallops were fresh but lacked the special tenderness one might expect from a great scallop. Moreover, they were missing that distinct, slightly sweet umami of the sea. The spicy sauce that they coat the scallops with is neither spicy nor tasty; it sort of overwhelms the palate without contributing much. I was disappointed with these and would not recommend them. Fried Calamari ($14.95) Rating 5.0/10 - I definitely didn't receive any "yuzu wasabi" sauce as advertised; I was given a "spicy mayonnaise" instead. To my surprise, the spicy mayonnaise was inoffensive and had a smooth taste. The calamari is fried along with jalapeño rings, which added a nice touch of spice. The squid itself is considerably chewy, compared with other calamari dishes I've had, and the overall flavor is mild. California Cut Roll ($10.95) Rating: 5.5/10 - A worthwhile purchase at the best price point of the night. A California roll made with real crab meat is a hidden gem in the food industry. For what it is, it's well made, but the quality of the rice and crab are not going to be spectacular in this price range. I would highly recommend this item if eating here.

Yelp
Sushi tasted like something from 711. Honestly I was so disappointed. It just didn't make sense because the restaurant itself looks very hole in the wall traditional and perfect on the outside. Maybe they accidently served me a bad batch? IDK. I've had sushi at 5-star Michelin restaurants and cheap places and at 711 and at home so I know my sushi! IDK what happened here in my experience hopefully they improve the sushi

Yelp
Haven't been to Shintaro in years and I'm happy to report the staples I liked are still terrific, those being the buttery and savory Black Cod Appetizer ($17) and beautiful and tasty Unagi Dinner over Rice w Miso Soup ($24), a generous portion and perfectly cooked with Shintaro's fluffy and not-too-sticky rice... The one demerit star I'm giving them is that their sushi rolls, while remaining quality cuts of fish, are tragically small now while remaining market price or even seem a tad pricey. Our tuna belly nigi roll? 6 tiny pieces and $21 dollars. Added all together, before being cut, it would have made for one hand roll at other fine sushi places like Katsu Nori and it would've been on the small side for that fine restaurant! Finally, the ambience and layout of the restaurant remain as it ever was, spacious, with the nice sushi bar you can sit at, and the huge screen playing old 1970's Japanese monster films on rotation... it all works and the service, by Asian ladies in kimono-style uniforms, is pleasant and on point. Easy parking in this corner lot mini mall, where the restaurant is located...

Yelp
Wow! This place is bomb!! How is this not on the list of "places to grab a bite before a show at Hollywood Bowl". We got right in, super cute inside. Sushi was fantastic! Service great. Everything was great! Get here people! It's some damn good sushi!
google avatar

Catrina R.

Yelp
Came here because we were craving sushi and have yet to find a go-to place (spoiler alert this is it from now on!). I had a picky sushi lover with me and he enjoyed it! Everything was super fresh and the cuts were very melt in your mouth. The chicken karaage was great (the sauce was phenomenal) and the gyoza was also tasty. It's a cute little spot that has a lot of seating with traditional sushi chefs in the secondary room. Special shout out to Miho who was a wonderful server! The location has a small lot in front. People come and go quickly so it wasn't too hard to find parking on a wednesday. With that said please note a lot of the spots are for 30 so make sure to get one that isn't one of those (tends to be the ones right in front of the shops). You can also walk here from the Hollywood and highland parking lot (a few blocks).

Yelp
This place has been on my list for a while so happy I finally got to try it. Shintaro is located in a small strip mall. A small parking lot and street parking are available. They provide plenty of indoor seating and the interior atmosphere is romantic and relaxing. I ordered a salmon hr, baked crab hr, and the soft shell crab appetizer. Everything was delicious and fresh. Soft shell crab was amazing, the best I've tried so far. The staff was professional. Overall, enjoyed my time here. The food was great, the staff was kind, and they have a lovely ambiance. However, they are on the pricier side so just be mindful of that. Tip: If you come with a party of 5 or more they automatically included an %18 tip on your bill.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the food here. Did not know what to expect. The best was the agedashi tofu appetizer. Even the two people I dined with agreed. Hot fried tofu in a starchy skin, with a delicious dipping sauce. The rolls and miso soup that we ordered were also excellent. The mochi dessert was tasty. You can tell from the diligence of the sushi chefs that they take food seriously. The restaurant is not as large as I thought but has very tall ceilings and a large video projected onto a wall which gives an old cinema vibe. Makes sense since they are in Hollywood.

Preston J.

Yelp
Incredible taste and very fresh. Fresh wasabi is the best. Certainly coming back. Weight staff very kind.

Yelp
Sushi is fresh, vibe is fun, service is great. Our family's regular go-to local spot. No reservations taken but long waits are uncommon in our experience. We sometimes Uber because parking can be tight in the parking lot.
google avatar

Yelp
World's best miso soup and you can not convince me otherwise. Food came out within a 10min wait. Very good service, with the waitress being lightning fast.

Yelp
Good food, decent portions, not overpriced. On my way to the Hollywood Bowl I stopped there with my wife. We ate and had sake, and, in true fashion, I forgot my fancy binoculars there. I called from the Bowl, they had found them, and kept it for me to pick up after the show. First class people. I would recommend it.

Yelp
Second experience was even better than the first. Got another small order of sake. Tried the most popular spicy tuna with crispy rice. It is good. But the miso cod and the albacore with crispy onion on cucumber were the highlights. Will chip away at the menu the next time I come around.

Yelp
Everything was great. Saturday night and the service was fast and friendly. Chicken katsu was excellent. Sushi was excellent. Dumplings were also excellent!

Yelp
We went to LA and stayed in Hollywood. We wanted to try a different sushi spot and we came across this one. Easy to find and right off of the strip, which made parking nice! We were very pleased with this sushi spot. The staff were all very nice and attentive. The atmosphere and ambiance were great as well. It's almost like you step into a whole different place when you're inside. The tables were clean and spread out enough where you felt like you had space and privacy. The food was really good and tasted very fresh.

Yelp
Delicious sushi combo plate, tempura, and hamapeño. Great pre-Hollywood Bowl, and great delivery! Always happy with their quality!
google avatar

Kay M.

Yelp
Great service and amazing food! Ordered dragon roll, salmon, some tempura shrimp for my kids and chicken katsu and they were all tasty. Garlic string beans were delicious. Most importantly, the best spicy margarita I've ever had.

Yelp
I hadn't been here in ages (used to live on a few blocks away) and decided to order some food to enjoy at the Hollywood Bowl last night for Janet Jackson. When we arrived at 7:30pm (Postmates indicated 7-7:30pm window for pick up) the food, in a stapled paper bag, was just sitting on the counter waiting for us so thought that was a bit odd... Food quality and taste was average, portions were tiny. Most notably: the negi toro hand roll was able to fit into your mouth with one big bite (at $18 wtf lol), the hot night roll super small, the tuna tataki was "non-tataki'd" haha, and the kinpira was not good - too sweet thickish sauce (I thought it would also have burdock and gobo thin slices in it too but I believe that's a variation of the dish). Green beans were tasty. There was also some random oil that got all over the container of the hot night roll but I specifically asked them to put any / all sauces on the side (which they did with the eel, spicy mayo) so unsure where this came oil from...but it got all over my jacket and saturated the brown paper bag the food came in. Tried to avoid this! Perhaps dining in is a different experience, but I know my Japanese food and have never had issues with spillage and mess with to-go until last night. It's a no from me.

Yelp
Philadelphia and dragon rolls are great. Very kind and great staff. Chef is great as well.

Yelp
We were staying in a nearby hotel and wanted a quick dinner - but didn't hae the energy for the crowds on the Hollywood strip. We had low expectations for a sushi restaruant in an unassuming strip mall, but were pleasantly surprised. After entering the restuarant, the ambience was subdued - a nice escape. Our table had a view of the sushi chefs at work. The food was excellent - and much cheaper than comparable restaurants in our home town. Attaching photos of Chirashi and the salmon carpaccio. Not pictured (but also delicious): baked black cod, garlic green beans, agedashi tofu.

Yelp
We got the Omakase, which is $95 per person. It was a gourmet 8 course experience. Everything was meticulously and freshly prepared in front of us. Superb quality. Would go again!
google avatar

Aya S.

Yelp
This place is amazing! The amount of food and quality of the dishes and ambiance are top notch. The prices are fantastic! I was visiting my daughter who lives nearby and she is planning to go back weekly :)
google avatar

Erin G.

Yelp
Great food! The sushi was extremely fresh and they accommodated my special request. Definitely try it out!
google avatar

Kate G.

Yelp
Yummy! I wish that I was able to experience this place with a true omakase experience but I was here for a business dinner. The food and service was exceptional with a surprisingly low bill at the end. I do wish that I had tried even more of their menu! I look forward to returning on my future visits to Hollywood.

Yelp
I ordered to go and was missing 2 sushi rolls and they refused to refund me for the two rolls. I even sent a picture to their manager for proof which shows read and he hung up in my face

Yelp
Had a date night here and it was a fun atmosphere and yummy sushi. Got there right when they opened and was seated within a couple minutes but it filled up within an hour.

Yelp
Quality fresh fish and good selection If you love garlic get the tuna steak on hot stone

Olivia B.

Yelp
Sushi and FULL BAR! The Mexican Moscow Mule was very fresh and delicious! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
My fav casual hang. Love to get nigiri and some apps. The white tuna steak is tasty. Snapper with shiso always good. Cucumber salad with real crab is nice and light too! Lots of things to choose from. They always have some black and white movie playing on the big projector on the wall and it's dimly lit. Good to go alone, with a date or with ppl.
google avatar

Keri P.

Yelp
The food is absolutely delicious and service was excellent! I highly recommend this place!! Ambience atmosphere and is a great date spot!

Bruce L.

Yelp
Love love shintaro great service, cute vibe, and good food, and a sweet price. the black cod, nasu miso and salad with a few rolls
google avatar

Yelp
Don't miss this jem of find. Tucked into the corner of a little strip mall is a very nice Japanese restaurant. They have a great bar and a very nice menu. If you're cruising up Highland on your way to the 101, hang a quick right just past Franklin. and they have parking!
google avatar

Bryan C.

Yelp
Intimate scenery and tasty sushi. Portions were small compared to their price. Regardless, a great place to take a date !

Jane F.

Yelp
I've come here a few times and it's been pretty good - unfortunately, I just left and did not enjoy the experience and no longer recommend this place. I ordered a toro handroll not a cut roll as hand rolls are usually less expensive. Im extremely upset because for starters, the spicy tuna, crispy rice was awful. As for the hand rolls, they were delicious but I was charged $22 for a Toro hand roll.... Bringing my total of $75 for literally an appetizer and three hand rolls. (I also got a crab handroll) actually crying over this experience :/

Marissa S.

Yelp
We went to this little hidden gem after a tour guide's recommendation. We were a little hesitant due to the outside but don't let looks deter you. Inside it is so cute and cozy. The service was great. The food was delicious!! We had the tempura appetizer-wonderful. Calamari-some of the best I've had. Spider roll and shrimp tempura roll both amazing!!

Tamara S.

Yelp
Hidden gem My favorite Japanese place in LA and the best omakase ever. The service is always friendly and the food is always great. The place is located in a simple mall, but the food is on a level of a more upscale restaurant for a price of a simple cafe Nice ambiance too. Simple, quite and feels like home. I also love how they always play some old Japanese movies with a projector on a wall.

Yelp
Easy chill yummy never too crazy lovely staff and one of those secret go to spots in hollywood

Nancy A.

Yelp
They were very fast after I called in order and were Very fresh and tasty! A quick walk from our hotel too!
google avatar

Anthony R.

Yelp
Went there last night for dinner before a concert at the Hollywood Bowl. We mainly picked it because it was within walking distance to the Bowl. From the outside, it looks sketchy as it is located in a somewhat rundown strip mall, but lesson learned as you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. As soon as we walked in, we were very happily surprised. Everything was great. Atmosphere, service, food. The prices were very reasonable too. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. Perfect spot to go before a concert or anytime you are in the area. Walking distance to Hollywood Boulevard as well. Awesome find!
google avatar

Brian W.

Yelp
In search of a place for lunch with work colleagues, we found this spot a few blocks away. Nothing fancy BUT great sushi, would return if ever in the area
google avatar

Lanita P.

Yelp
The food here was fresh and delicious. The atmosphere inside had a nice ambience and the old Japanese Gamera movies brought back memories from my childhood. Good service here and I would consider it a hidden gem. I didn't give this restaurant 5 stars because I didn't like the parking lot or the homeless people hanging outside.

L M.

Yelp
This WAS a decent local spot...until I learned their kitchen hygiene is non existent. Service was slow, we didn't get 90% of our order until an hour and a half in. The kicker...we ordered mixed tempura and it was ice cold. I took a bite of one. We let our server know and she whisked it away. She comes back with a plate of tempura and it's the same one we sent back, bite and all. The kitchen just threw back the same pieces into the fryer to reheat.
google avatar

B E.

Yelp
The best. It's crazy to me that I've never reviewed this place when I've been regularly coming since around 2004. Nothing compares to the food and the feel of Shintaro. They are consistently good and their prices are generous. I prefer straight up sushi to the fancy rolls that excite most. Give me fresh fish and good rice and whatever magic the chef sprinkles on it and I am in heaven. Sit down and say, what should we eat? Allow the chef to do his art and deliver whatever goodness he feels. Where soy sauce is a no no. I'll eat most sea critters on the menu except never octopus (watch My Octopus Friend and tell me that sweetheart isn't the most special, brilliant creature ever). But Uni? Uni for days. Amberjack? Sure, bring it. Toro? Nom nom. Whatever the chef says. Nothing has changed over the years and that's because when you've got a great thing going, you don't need to change a damn thing. Mahalo, Shintaro. You deal with so many ridiculous people, given your location. And you consistently display nothing but grace in the sea of chaos that is Hollywood/Highland. Never change. See you soon.
google avatar

Michael N.

Yelp
The place doesn't look like much from the outside, but the sushi here is consistently excellent. A great place for a pregame meal before the Bowl, or just as a dinner destination unto itself.
google avatar

Darshi A.

Yelp
This place is a great option if you're going to the Hollywood Bowl! We had dinner there and it was a great experience! Food was fresh & delicious and the service was respectful. My daughter and I had a great sushi date!
google avatar

James G.

Yelp
For last minute good food prior to a concert at the Bowl, you can't beat it. They move people through quickly and serve good food. I would not say it is the best japanese food I ever had, but when you are hungry and the concert is starting soon, you can't beat it! Thank you!
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious Tuna & Salmon Sashimi. Environmental vibe is status: CHILL. I recommend and will be back.

Yelp
This place was not bad, j just had a red dragon roll to go. And it was what I expected. It didn't blow me away but it was good. The service was pretty prompt.
