During my stay from 11/30/24 to 12/4/24, I interacted with the staff at least six times, and they were great every single time. Their friendliness and professionalism stood out and are the main reasons I'm giving 3 stars because honestly, the hotel doesn't live up to its 4-star hotel rating that is claimed.
The property itself definitely needs some work. The hallways and rooms need a deep cleaning, and the decor is really outdated--popcorn ceilings, and old fans in the bathroom for example. The A/C worked fine, but the room had a faint damp smell. The bathroom could've been better--there was hair left behind, and some mildew around the shower caulking. The beach towels were tiny and thin, though the front desk happily gave me an extra when I asked. The rooftop pool is small but a decent spot to chill for a few hours.
I watched more TV than usual since I was traveling solo, and the commercials were way too frequent and long. This is more of a Hawaii cable company issue, but if you plan to watch anything, bring a laptop so you have more options.
There was some late-night noise from people partying on the street (bars and clubs nearby) and my neighbor across the hall who seemed to come back at 3 a.m. Light sleepers should bring earplugs. It wasn't a huge issue for me since I'm used to waking up randomly anyway but know the sliding glass door is old and thin / single paned (1970's maybe). When someone showers in another room and possibly another floor, you will hear the pipes running very well. This started around 5 AM and lasted till at least 11 AM (on and off) as people were probably showering for the airport and to leave out for the day.
The balconies were closed during my stay (see pic). Honestly, they look pretty thin, and I'd be nervous about standing on them even if it was open. It looked like they might be retrofitting them, so hopefully, they'll be safer in the future as across the US older buildings balconies have been collapsing that are designed just as this hotels.
On the plus side, the location is perfect if you like busy Waikiki. It's a short walk to the beach, many restaurants, and shops. The mall is just a quick Lyft/Uber ride or a $3 bus trip away. I don't usually take the bus, but since I was alone, I tried it--it was quick and easy and picked up nearly in front of the hotel. I walked back from the mall, which is about 1.5 miles. The bed and pillows were fine--nothing special, but clean sheets and no bedbugs is all I really care about. The complimentary chips and juice in the mini fridge were a nice touch (I only drank the juice). I ate at the "Heavenly" restaurant which is on the ground level and the fish and chips were perfect. The hotel gives daily coupons of $5.00 off I think it was, to this place which was cool and a recommend even without the coupon.
Bottom line: The Shoreline Hotel Waikiki is fine for solo travelers or couples who don't need anything fancy or for short stays. Personally, my wife and teenagers would've hated it--they prefer places as nice as or nicer than home when on vacation, and this isn't that.
While the hotel has its issues, the staff made my stay enjoyable. I'd probably stay here again if I were traveling alone and didn't need to impress anyone. Big thanks to the Shoreline Hotel staff for their excellent service during my visit!
