Do NOT visit this zoo. There are hardly any animals and the ones that are there look miserable, living in dirty enclosures that haven’t been cleaned in years. Yes, the entrance fee is very cheap. But I would much rather pay more, have the funds go towards caring for the animals and see them living in a clean space. The atmosphere of the zoo is not nice and you can feel the pain of the animals. It almost feels as though the zoo has been closed for years and you’re just walking around looking at a few animals that were left behind. Very sad experience overall.

Shoushan Zoo, located in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, is a great destination for families and animal lovers. Recently renovated, the zoo offers a cleaner, more spacious environment for both visitors and animals. It is home to over 70 species, including Formosan black bears, Bengal tigers, and various exotic birds. One of the highlights of Shoushan Zoo is its focus on conservation and education. The zoo provides interactive exhibits and educational programs that teach visitors about wildlife protection. The enclosures are designed to resemble natural habitats, giving animals a more comfortable living space. The zoo is quite affordable, with an entrance fee of only NT$40 for adults, making it one of the cheapest zoos in Taiwan. However, the walking paths are quite steep, which might be challenging for some visitors. The zoo is also relatively small compared to others, so it can be explored within a few hours. A major advantage of visiting Shoushan Zoo is its location near Shoushan (Monkey Mountain). Visitors can enjoy a hike before or after their zoo trip, making it a perfect day out in nature. Additionally, the zoo is accessible by public transportation, making it convenient for tourists. Shoushan Zoo is a great place to visit, especially for families with children. While it may not be the biggest or most modern zoo, its affordability, educational value, and scenic surroundings make it a worthwhile stop in Kaohsiung.

Not a large zoo. Few animals for each species. Mostly they are hidden in the area where you can’t see. Traveling there requires bus. The zoo will take you 2-3 hours to complete. Entrance fee 40twd/person.

I recommend going here if you have a limited amount of time since the whole zoo is compact. They do not have pandas but they have Formosan Black bear, Sika deer, and friendly goats. Monkeys are everywhere so be careful out here but overall, this was better than Taipei Zoo. There is also a kiddie pool for kids to wade in esp. in that Tropical heat Kaohsiung has. Paid ₱74 on Klook for this and was it worth it! If you don't know how to go here, just take bus 56 across Kaohsiung Main Station and it will drop you off directly there. Take the same bus at the same stop to go back either to Yanchengpu or Kaohsiung Main, either way as long as you are on the MRT, it is easy to go back to Taipei if you came from there like I was.

Google
Fine experience. I loved the bridges as they allowed a great observation point for the various animal displays. Many of the cages seemed old and inadequate while others were updated and fine. As so often I wished the zoo would focus even more on local species and thoughtful education.

Google
Great environment for animals. But kids are too noisy. Most of the animals look lay back, but the Taiwan Formosan Bear looks a bit anxious. The walk way is a great design to be animal centrism.

A small and easy zoo park for travellers where provide heartfelt convenience like free locker after entering the zoo, paid service little train cruising around the park with clear intro slowly just like slow walking.

Ticket is only 40NT. Nice skyline walk for viewing the animals. Hopefully animals have more living space in the future. Wild monkeys in the area can be aggressive. Be aware.

Yelp
This is the first zoo I had ever visited in Taiwan! Surprisingly enough, my dear friend Carissa treated me to a spontaneous zoo trip on the day that I was meeting with her, after my study abroad program effectively kicked me out of my dorm. I would have figured the program itself would take me to a zoo, but not everyone is a biologist like me, so that didn't happen. After taking a bumpy train ride to Kaohsiung from Tainan, my angel Carissa and her father picked me up from the station and drove me to their home to settle before we were dropped off at this zoo. I guess zoos are special in that they provide opportunities to see animals that you would not normally see locally or wildly in the area of the zoo. This zoo however is a combined zoo and national park, so there are some wild parts to it I'd say. (Some of monkeys in the area are free roaming and I'd personally just be careful because monkeys are unpredictable.) The zoo is fairly decent for its price, though I always place my value on the memory of a place, and this place is valuable. I just loved that I got to spend time with my friend and her family before I went back home to the States. This zoo is great for kids, and there is a place for kids to play in the water.

Yelp
I am a big fan of zoos because I love animals and am curious about what animals exist in this world. Some people are against zoos but I find them ok in my opinion, because in a way, the animals are taken cared of and have shelters to stay at. It's also educational for people to learn about different animals. I took a public bus and walked about 20 minutes to the zoo on a Wednesday afternoon. The zoo was pretty empty. The entrance fee is NTD$40 or NTD$20 for students. It's cash only I believe. The employee gave me a slip of paper and I went to the next counter where the lady punched a hole in the slip. After entering, I went to the Information Center to get a map guide. Then I found out that the lockers are for people to use and the fee NTD$10 is refundable, which is great and convenient. I looked at the brochure map guide and it was a bit confusing. I started walking through the B section, then C, D, and I skipped F. The zoo was pretty empty and some of the animals were resting. I saw some employees bring food to some of the animals. This wasn't the best zoo I've been to because some animals weren't available and some places were closed off. But for the price of entry, it's not bad.
