Hazrat Syed Abdullah Shah Ghazi (Rahmatullah Alaih) ​Introduction: He was a renowned Muslim Sufi Saint and Majzoob (one lost in divine thoughts) whose shrine is located in Clifton, Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. His shrine is situated on a hill overlooking the Arabian Sea and is a historic and spiritual site. ​Ancestry and Lineage: He belongs to the Ahl al-Bayt (the family of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him). His lineage is often traced back to the fourth generation of Hazrat Ali (Karam Allahu Wajhah), and some narratives suggest he was a descendant of Hazrat Hasan ibn Ali. He is also known by the name Abdullah Al-Ashtar. ​Arrival in Sindh and Martyrdom: It is believed that he migrated from Arabia and came to Sindh (the area of present-day Karachi). The time of his arrival is generally placed around the 8th century CE. Historical accounts vary regarding his arrival in Sindh and his background. He was martyred in a forest in Sindh by his enemies, and his devotees buried him on a hill in the coastal area of Karachi. ​Miracles and Devotion: He is regarded as a Ghazi (one who fights for the faith) and a Wali Allah (Friend of God). Many stories of his miracles are famous, including the belief that his blessings protect Karachi from severe sea storms. The Sindh government has transformed this place into an architectural wonder. I have been visiting this shrine since I was a kid and recently went there with my family. I remember how hectic it was to reach all the way to the top where the saint's grave was located. I was pleasantly surprised to see how much it had changed. Most of all, it has wheelchair accessibility all the way to the grave. Now, that is an amazing feat. The langar (free food distribution) is still there, but more orderly now.
