MAZARI SHARIF
Afghanistan
Mazar-e Sharif, also known as Mazar or Mazar-i-Sharif, is a city in Afghanistan and the capital of Balkh Province. The name means "tomb of the saint" and refers to the tomb of Ali, the son-in-law, cousin, and companion of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. The tomb is located in the Blue Mosque, a large, blue-tiled mosque and shrine in the center of the city that was built in the 15th century.
Mazar-e Sharif is Afghanistan's fourth-largest city by population, with an estimated 500,207 residents in 2021. The city became part of the Afghan Durrani Empire around 1750 and remained peaceful for the next century. During the Soviet war in the 1980s, Mazar-e Sharif was a strategic base for the Soviet Army.
Some attractions in Mazar-e Sharif include: Ariana Park, Khaled Ibne Walid Family Park, and Shrine of Ali.
