I'm a Double Amputee Paralympian With Prosthetic Legs — Here's What It's Like to Travel the World

"When corrective measures for his congenital limb condition weren’t working in infancy, this pediatric hospital was the first to recommend amputation; following their guidance, his parents proceeded with bilateral leg amputations at 11 months, and within six months he was fitted with prosthetics and learning to walk like other children — a pivotal medical intervention that shaped his mobility and athletic future." - Hunter Woodhall and Rachel Chang Hunter Woodhall and Rachel Chang https://www.travelandleisure.com/author/rachel-chang Travel + Leisure Editorial Guidelines

We were blessed to meet an incredible doctor who has been caring for our son since birth Dr. Gollaberg's dedication to traveling to Springfield Shriners has made a profound impact on our son Arvin, who instantly connected with him. When our son was diagnosed with left-hand hemiplegia, Dr. Gollaberg shared inspiring stories of kids with the same condition, lifting our spirits. His recent procedure in Boston has brought tremendous progress for our son. I'm eternally grateful for his compassionate heart. My family will forever cherish the gift of meeting such an amazing doctor, whose passion for healing children is truly a blessing.

I am a Zamora Roadrunner Shriner from Birmingham Alabama, this is not one of our normal hospitals but I got the opportunity to take this patient transport trip. As soon as we walked in we were greeted with open arms. Words can not describe how they treated our patient. The people who work for the Shriners hospital work selflessly to improve the lives of children everyday. And we got great advice of where to find the best cheese steaks.

This hospital is MAGICAL: like Disney magical. I have never encountered a medical professional here who was not the absolute best in his or her field. The nurses are knowledgeable, patient, and kind. The occupational therapists are take the time to find innovative ways to keep my teenage son interested in therapy, and they listen to his concerns. I have never met doctors and nurse practitioners who are more compassionate than those who work at this facility. Together, they are giving my son with quadriplegia the ability to use his hands again. If you are considering travelling here for treatment, it is well-worth the trip. I am eternally grateful.

What an amazing hospital. Six-year-old with a broken elbow. Was referred here from Doylestown hospital. The staff was incredible and Dr. Park is amazing. PACU nurses are little angels! And it was two days before Christmas and they gave him Christmas presents. Thank you so much for all you do and happy holidays to everybody.

My son broke his arm twice on two separate occasions and both times we ended up at Shriners. Both times he was in and out in less than 1 1/2 hours without even an appointment. The staff is so sympathetic and caring to the children and take any fear away. Shriner's is a first class hospital and i would never have reservations taking my child here.

I can not express my feelings of gratitude to this hospital. They are truly amazing! My infant is finally getting the care and attention he needed. As a parent of an infant who had markers for cerebral palsy I am so glad I came here. They are getting to the bottom of my son’s medical problems. Other hospitals brushed off my infant even though it was obvious something was not right. The staff that works here really is so warm and genuinely care about its patients and the parents too. I have had a very powerful experience here that will forever change me as a person. God bless this hospital for the work they do for sick children. Thank you Shriners for what you are doing for my son and me.
