Shrove Tuesday

We chanced upon Shrove Tuesday after having a full meal at the coffee shop next door, and decided to stop by for a little dessert. The place is clean, cosy, and well-maintained — a nice spot to cool down and chat after a meal. I decided to try their recommended Pistachio and Triple Chocolate ice cream. Both were decent, though I would say the flavours leaned towards the milder side. The pistachio had a light nutty note, and the triple chocolate wasn’t too sweet, which some might appreciate. Personally, I found them quite average in flavour, but my peers really enjoyed the creamy, milky base of the ice cream. Price-wise, it’s on the higher end, especially for the portion and flavour intensity, but it’s probably expected for a cafe-style dessert place. I did notice they also serve coffee, snacks, and light bites, so it’s a convenient place to hang out if you’re looking for something simple beyond ice cream.

Came all the way on a Monday afternoon, only to be told that they are not serving the chendol waffle. Very disappointed. Ordered the plain waffle with pistachio ice cream. Pistachio ice cream was good. Aircon was not cold enough. They only accept cash and paynow. Very weird as their stuff is not that cheap yet they don't accept credit card payment. Unlikely to return.

Food were ok - I tried a Horlicks Tim Tam and a Salted Caramel ice cream, coupled with a hot Long Black. They were satisfactory But it's the small details. Not allowed to sample flavours before ordering, no discount for a double scoop compared to a single scoop. They also couldn't find change for me when I handed $10 notes over! Lady at the counter (Vietnamese) also looked like she wished she was elsewhere

Chendol waffle was tasty and easily shared between 2 people as there are 2 pieces. Pies seemed microwaved, very hot on the inside but not so on the outside, and the chilli crab pie crust was tough. Only one person manning the counter, friendly but she disappeared for awhile just when we needed to get a takeaway container. Nice music soundtrack and relaxing ambience. Large range of gelato. 🍦

The atmosphere was pleasant, but the peppermint ice cream we ordered turned out soggy. When I asked about it, the staff said it was normal, though I doubt that’s the case.

Quality control of flavours was quite bad. The strawberry milk and gula melaka flavours were very powdery and grainy. Milk & honey and vanilla were ok.

Went to Shrove Tuesday with my family today around 7pm and ordered 2 classic waffles (1 for $5), with one scoop of coconut and one scoop of milk ice cream (1 for $3.50). Waffles and ice cream came relatively fast, and were crunchy on the outside, while soft on the inside. The waffles were served hot, so they tasted really good! Interior of the shop is really nice and clean, so it was a pleasant dining experience. Had quite a number of ice cream options to chose from too. Will definitely come back!

Many of the ingredients are not available so I was not able to try their signature waffles. Today is a Friday. Perhaps I should come Shrove Tuesday on a Tuesday instead? They seem to have changed their waffles from circular to rectangular. The waffles today feels soggy. Hope the availability and quality of food is not being compromised in order to battle inflation or due to fears of recession. This ice cream parlour is in the midst of Toa Payoh heartland, so the crowd consist of mostly heartlanders. Comfortable place for homemakers, children and the elderly. Must give credit to the service staff at the counter though. She is patient and understanding. Thumbs up!

Yelp
Located within 5 minutes walk of Braddell mrt is this cafe, located under a block of HDB flats. It has a very simple outlook, of white washed walls and sign board. But the minute you walk in, you are greeted by the variety of ice cream and rainbow cakes that they offer. No pork or lard :) Who knew you could display cakes alongside ice creams in the same fridge? COOL idea. Nonetheless, we got ourselves a waffle with 2 scoops of gelato. Roasted Pistachio which was a premium flavour so $2.50 + $0.80 and Rocher which was $2.50. Waffle with Roasted Pistachio and Rocher Gelato $10.80 And here it was, the leaning tower of gelato! I really enjoyed both flavours of the gelato. I just couldn't get enough of it. The roasted pistachio was my favourite. The rocher was very chocolatey and creamy as well. Both weren't over-poweringly sweet, and that's why I loved it. Look at the thickness of the waffle. It was so fluffy and awesome!! Definitely coming back for more waffles! Here's why their waffles are so fluffy! Because they use yeast raised batter and each batter takes 3 hours to ferment! The fermentation processes releases C02 making their waffles light and crunchy! Take note employees of the above companies, you get 10% discount M-F 12-7PM :) All in all, a great place to chill out even though I wasn't able to connect to their wifi for some weird reason. Yelp
Honestly, Shrove Tuesday is only my third cafe after returning from Tokyo. While I still hold a healthy skepticism with regards to the quality of cafe food, I am delighted to discover some stellar food here, thanks to the recommendation by a coffee guru friend Gelato is no longer a novelty but there is something playful when it comes to the Italian ice cream here. It's Gelato desserts. This magnum-lookalike "Milk Chocolate Classico" might not be convince you to splurge $10 but wait till you sink your teeth into the chocolate shell. Instead of the typical artificial-tasting buttery ice confectionary, a dense caramel brownie-like layer concealed in the fresh and smooth vanilla gelato, made it extremely pleasurable yet gratifying. Count yourself lucky if you managed to detonate one of their "BOMB" (bizzare ice cream balls), especially the salted caramel version which was unavailable during my visit. Same goes for the Matcha & Black Sesame gelato ($2.50/$3 for premium). Yes, these might be my two favourite flavors but there is a reason why they are standouts of their own species. The Black sesame gelato grabbed our attention away from its matcha counterpart due to its warm earthy nuttiness, thanks to the incorporation of grinded BS seeds and BS paste. But be forewarned that the sugar content for both flavours were askew. Waffles ($5) were light and delicately crisp on the edges, crawling in with subtle honey sweetness. Cakes are not as stellar as the gelato so expect standards to fluctuate with the nature of pastries. Baked goods like the Strawberry Rose Red Velvet ($4.50) had a stale, uninspiring rose buttercream, clearly not performing at its utmost. Though neither coffee nor orange was discernible in the Ivory Orange Coffee Mousse ($4.50), the texture of the mousse was smooth and wholesome. While there is a range of other cakes such as Peanut Banana, Tiramisu and cheesecakes, I'm contented with their gelato creations, which I hope can be further experimented and one day expand to become the forte of the cafe, apart from waffles and coffee.

Yelp
Light and crispy waffles. Very good. Probably best waffles in Singapore. Worth driving more than 10 km for these waffles.

Yelp
Hipster cafe in a rustic neighborhood. Main attraction: waffles A friend brought me here, she can't stop raving about this place's waffles. We alighted at Braddell Station and walked in between the HDB block to get to this cafe. Approx 5mins. It's an old neighborhood, so it is fairly easy to find a parking lot if you plan to drive. Typical cutesy, cosy hipster cafe. Nothing over the top, generally well decorated. We ordered a Waffles with chocolate ice cream, cafe latte, citron tea and Mexican wings. Approx $22 They arrived fairly quickly. Waffles was good, and clearly they take pride in it - there is a dedicated chalk board to justify and tell people just why their waffles is so good and how they made them. In addition, the wifi password is "crispywaffles". The coffee was below average, citron tea was ok. The Mexican wings were terrible. They all had a weird smell to them, felt like it was dunked in some detergent or cleaning solution. It was so bad, we had to stop eating them. Informed the staff when she cleared our plates, claims she will look it up but did not come back with a response. Instead, she sat down and watch her drama series. I would have given them more stars probably 3/5. If not for them - disregarding customers feedback and the horrible wings. The one and only thing (maybe two) that you would visit this place for would be the waffles and maybe the ice cream.
