I had a very pleasant experience staying at Komadori. Being my first shukubo, I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was similar to staying in a ryokan but in someone's home, like a Japanese B&B. They arrange bath times so you can get the bathhouse to yourself, which as a beautiful cedar tub with floating yuzu fruits! That was my highlight. The food was absolutely delicious. It was almost too much food, and they do include some meat dishes including duck and chicken. (They are Shinto, not Buddhist.) All the staff members were friendly, it seemed to be run by a young woman (didn't see any male staff). My room was basic but clean. I did not have any issues. There were 2 other pairs from Europe during my stay.
You can also do a morning prayer ceremony at Mitake Shrine, though it is only in Japanese. The priest does a fairly short ceremony which you follow, and spends the majority of the time telling the history of the temple.
