I’ve stayed at many different hotels in OBX, and this one is by far my favorite! I had an amazing stay here. The hotel perfectly balances comfort and luxury, offering a wide range of amenities. There’s a heated indoor and outdoor pool with plenty of seating, plus a hot tub that was such a bonus. The gym was a convenient size and well-equipped. The private beach is less than a minute away—so peaceful and never overcrowded. I loved the outdoor water spigots for rinsing off sandy feet, and during some hours, there was barely any traffic, which made everything even more relaxing. The large gazebo and extra seating outside are perfect for small to medium gatherings. Breakfast was great—plenty of options with both indoor and outdoor seating. I also really appreciated the free lemon water and chocolates always available in the lobby. The rooms were spacious, beds super comfortable, with lots of pillows and extra blankets provided. The location is also close to great restaurants and attractions. Truly an unforgettable stay—can’t wait to come back!

The location was great and staff was wonderful. Breakfast is on the smaller side but not bad. We booked the dune view room. It was clean, but the rust in and around the bath tub was off-putting. The shower pressure was amazing and shower gets really hot. The access to beach was great but the outdoor shower to wash the sand off your feet is poorly designed and does not always work. Pools were great and clean. Overall, the stay was alright.

Very clean, quiet little hotel on the beach. Our room was comfortable, very clean and equipped with a mini-fridge and microwave. We had a ground floor room in the tower that had a back door that opened onto a small concrete patio with two chairs. Comfortable bed. We had a "dune view" but hotel has a convenient private beach access so you are steps from the beach. Parking is free. Free breakfast buffet each morning but be aware the dining area is very small, although they do have additional seating on an outside patio area. We only stayed one night but was very comfortable. We definitely would consider booking again in the future.

Google
Pros: This room was immaculate. There was one minor issue but maintenance handled it quickly and happily. The rooms are updated and, well roomy! The beds were comfortable. Shower pressure is AMAZING and hot water is plentiful. Breakfast was more than what you normally get for a free breakfast. There is a gazebo near the top of the dune. There is a walkway if you have difficulty walking. Cons: The ONLY con I have is the layout of the bathroom. You walk in and the bathroom sink is right there. The door for the toilet/tub area is darn near impossible to close because of how small it is. But honestly it is a great value for the money!

We stayed here in the middle of May 2025. Location was great as it was beachfront.Room was good except that it had a funky smell for a while. Our room was never cleaned nor were fresh towels ever brought to our room. We were told on two different occasions that certain things would be brought to our room and they were not. We always had to go and get the things we needed from the front desk. Breakfast was OK with the typical breakfast items that hotels provide. I would probably find another hotel to try on my next trip.

Google
Really nice rooms (cute cottage style) Highly recommend an ocean view! Facilities were all clean & comfortable. Beach access was just a short walk over the dune. Perfect place to bring your family! Definitely will be back!!

Google
Hotel was okay. Not worth the price though. You can hear the plumbing from surrounding rooms, and the bathroom/sink area was so close together the door can barely close as it’s inches away from the toilet. The bathroom ceiling is also very low so good luck if you’re above 5’10 lol. Overall alright experience, bonus points for being next to the beach.

Google
The location of this hotel is excellent! Right on the ocean and in the heart of the outer banks with so many restaurants, shops, and attractions nearby. The beach path was clear unlike some reviews we saw before we booked. The included breakfast was solid. Hot tub was closed one night we were there and the room could have been cleaner. The walls are also thin and parking lot noise I can imagine could be annoying in the summer with how close the rooms are to the parking lot. These are minor concerns overall it was a great experience and all staff we encountered were friendly and helpful.

Yelp
Great location, free breakfast, easy beach access with indoor and outdoor pool. Clean property & friendly staff

Adrienne Z.

Yelp
Very clean and classy place! Rooms are super cute and the beds 10 /10 for cleanliness and comfort. Breakfast was awesome, fresh scrambled eggs and bacon, (none of that powdered stuff) fresh biscuits and pastries. 2 pools, 1 indoor and 1 outdoor. Friendly attentive staff. Well kept and maintained property! I would highly recommend the establishment to anyone, especially families. Also has private beach access , outdoor showers and a gazebo too! Very convenient.

Yelp
Overall this place was great for a short stay. I don't like to stay in hotels or motels if I have to but this one was much cleaner than I've experienced before. Traveling with two kids, 4 year old and 3 month old, I was comfortable staying there with them. The room was in the tower dune view first floor and we didn't hear any other guests at all. Breakfast was nice and staff was more than willing to help with anything. Only cons: The a/c made loud noises similar to fireworks at one point which kept me awake for some time but that seemed to resolve with adjusting the temperature. Also the outdoor showers on the beach path had no water to them so cleaning sand off prior to entering our room was challenging. In the end if we needed to stay somewhere for a night or two we would choose to stay again.

Penny R.

Yelp
Comfortable, clean, roomy, great location. They are in the process of a remodel. This made checking in a bit tricky. We were on the 3rd floor and we could just see over the dune for an ocean view. Bed was comfortable and crisp sheets. We asked for extra pillows when we booked and they were there. Small shower and limited sink space. Indoor pool was being refurbished.

Onawa C.

Yelp
We were initially greeted by a momma spider who had baby spiders. They treated the room near the door immediately and no more issues. It was a relaxing trip and the beds could have been more firm. The pools/hot tub were quiet and clean. Their breakfast was a basic breakfast with good options. Our room was great, and close by the water! We would go back.

Susan M.

Yelp
Stayed here about 6 years ago with a nice room facing the ocean. This time we had a " pool /parking lot view" for far more money than we paid the first time. Sadly, this place feels like a mediocre motel beachside. The shutters on the window with the 24 hour/day glaring lights streaming into our room made sleep difficult. The room was quite simple. Will not bother to return. Went for the barely heated pool and inadequate hot tub jets.

Jason A.

Yelp
The property was very clean and staffed by a team of courteous and helpful individuals. The breakfast was a typical continental spread. Beach access was convenient. Great way to visit the outer banks.

Tamatha D.

Yelp
This was our first stay and we loved it! The view from the tower was amazing. Everything was clean and up to date.

Tammy L.

Yelp
Great place to stay! Wonderful and friendly staff, pools are clean and well taken care of, room was in immaculate shape. Highly recommend. We will be back again and again!

Brandy G.

Yelp
For our spontaneous get-away, we stayed for one night. The check-in staff was fantastic; they were extremely pleasant and accommodating. The gentleman that was there (I believe his name was Ron?) recommended some good restaurants to try. The motel is located right on the beach. The view of the ocean is just breathtaking. The room was not horrible, however it had an unpleasant musty odor. For $250 + tax a night, I accepted more.

John W.

Yelp
Great experience for a weekend getaway. Room was clean and everything worked. Only knock was the little, hard pillows on the bed ... 3 was too many and 2 was not enough. Breakfast was a real breakfast with biscuits and gravy, waffles -- both full-size and silver dollar -- and cereal, yogurt, juices. The red-haired lady who ran the breakfast room made the experience even more enjoyable, plus, there was a sitting room with a fireplace where we sat and read. Would we do it again? Yep, in a heartbeat -- and sooner than later.

MISTISA P.

Yelp
They are not flexible even if your flights change they will not let you check out early if you do they will charge you full price... they also say that all the hotel here do that. The beds on the lower floors are not as good as the 2 second floor. MAKE SURE YOUR FLIGHT IS NOT CHANGING. YOU WILL EAT 200 A NIGHT. CHECK OUT AT 11AM BUT CHECK IN IS 4PM SO TELL me why peoples cant check out early? Money hungry get copies of everything.

Christina G.

Yelp
Overall a nice place. I've stayed in the obx quite a few times in both houses and hotels. Shutters has a great check in process. The front desk staff was amazing. I had a two queen suite with ocean view. I asked to upgrade and I got a king room with a pull out couch. I was very dissatisfied with the king room. It wasn't any bigger and when we pulled out the couch bed it was not clean. Literally crumbs and bugs. I went back to the office and told them and they immediately moved me back to the queen room which was great. It looked like the king room wasn't as updated as the queen. The pool room was nice, great easy walk to the beach, the beds were comfortable and the free breakfast is a standard hotel breakfast. The only other concern I had was the elevator. I felt like it was a gamble if I was going to get stuck in it every time I used it. Not sure when these should be checked but it has been a while. I would go back if I got a good deal on the rate.

Mary B.

Yelp
It is a great location! Private beach entrance. Close to many restaurants, shops, etc. Would definitely stay there again.

TrailBlazer P.

Yelp
This is a nice place to stay when coming to OBX. You get beach access, accommodate pets, and have complimentary breakfast! Overall a great place, I definitely recommend it.

Mayii M.

Yelp
Disappointing. Staff: Friendly, but not accommodating. Room: MAJOR improvement is needed. See photos The beds are very uncomfortable and feels hard. There is a funky smell in the room. Carpet is messed up. Dunes view... literally the dune is blocking my view, not overlooking it, but actually stayed directly in front of it. Bathroom: Disappointing. Not pleasing to the eye. The faucet is broken, visible rust in the tub. Internet: Poor connection Cellular signal from the dunes view, NO SERVICE. Not happy. Beach is accessible, indoor and outdoor pool available.

Candra M.

Yelp
We drove in a day early and needed a place to stay for the night. Got in around 2am and went to about 5 hotels before landing on this one. Went in and we were greeted by Eric. He was very helpful, polite and professional. He got us in a room and made sure that we had all the things we needed for our short stay. The next day during check out we were greeted by another friendly staffer. Room was sufficient for the stay; staff was exceptional!

Rick P.

Yelp
We stayed here for one night on a weekend get-a-way. All in all, it's not a bad place to stay. The room we had was a room by the parking lot on the first floor, 2 queen beds. The room was very nicely furnished looks newly updated. The ONLY complaints we had are very minor, but nonetheless, worth mentioning. The Hotel is obviously an older facility - but very well kept. The room walls are VERY thin and not well insulated. We could hear when the phone rang and muffled conversations in the room next to ours. We could also hear footsteps from the room above ours. The shower was hot, but again an older model shower shower head (Still got the job done). The fridge didn't have a temp control that we could find and didn't cool the drinks very well, if at all. The bottom line - would we stay here again - YES!!

Adrienne S.

Yelp
I stayed here for our mini-moon and we had a lovely time! We stayed in an Ocean view junior suite in tower building all the way on the end/corner and it was lovely. The room was large and had a tv for both the bedroom and the living room area. The bed was comfy and we didn't hear a lot of noise or other disturbances. The sunrise view was great and you could hear the ocean. The balcony provides a great view and location for relaxing. Beach access was so convenient and the beach was really good quality Breakfast was pretty good - bacon, bagels, eggs, cereal, coffee etc. Its not the same as a restaurant but it's included in cost and quick and convent Location is convenient to restaurants, bars, and shops. Parking was plentiful and easy to find. Staff was friendly and helpful. The room was clean and the bathroom was spacious and nice Overall, we had a wonderful stay and would happily return

Yelp
We recently stayed in room 226 in the Tower building at Shutters On The Banks. We've been coming to Shutters for many years and have never had any issues until this year. Now, suffice it to say, we will never be back. We were scheduled to check out on a Saturday. Thursday night at approximately 9pm we found not one, but two insects in our room that appeared to be cockroaches. For legal reasons, I'm not a bug expert and cannot say definitively that these insects were cockroaches, but numerous Google searches led us to believe the insect to be an Oriental Cockroach, native to North Carolina. Now my 8 year old is begging to leave and I'm concerned about taking hitchhikers back home. I know in this situation people in other hotels have successfully gotten their whole trip refunded due to this. I didn't request that. I merely wanted a few nights refunded just in case one of these things came home with me and I had to call an exterminator. I think that's more than fair. I called the front desk and was told that they couldn't move us because the hotel was full (which I didn't want anyway) but they could give us what amounted to a can of Raid. Unacceptable, so my husband called the front desk and asked for the manager. He was told there was no one on premesis in charge and that there was no way to reach any such person. Which is ridiculous. He bagged the live insect up and took it to the front desk being careful to avoid other guests because he wasn't trying to make a scene (when in reality he should have showed it to everyone he walked by, but he was still hoping for a mutually beneficial resolution at this point). The girl at the front desk was immediately grossed out (recognizing what the insect likely was but also not a bug expert) and was very apologetic. Still, he needed to talk to someone who could make decisions. She told him there was no way to reach the manager but called the maintenance supervisor. He refused to even come talk to him in person, opting instead to have the counter attendant text him pictures of the bug and then called him back and gave him the same run around. We left that night with a promise that when the manager came in at 9:30am the next day, we'd receive a phone call. 2:30pm in the afternoon and still no call, so I called the hotel. I was told the manager had already left for the day. So the ONLY person in charge of a hotel that's open 24/7 came in at 9:30, didn't call a very upset customer about a sanitation/pest issue, and then left 5 hours later with absolutely no way for their staff to contact them if needed? Absolutely unacceptable. So now this review, and the accompanying pictures (where ever I can post pictures) will be going up so everyone knows what they may be getting into if they check into Shutters, because they've made absolutely zero effort to fix the situation. I've seen at least one past review on their Facebook page that says pretty much the same thing, so stay here at your own risk and know that if you are dissatisfied with anything, they will definitely not go out of their way to make it right. Update: just received a call from the maintenance supervisor, literally right after I posted this. He said he's been texting the manager and she told him that she could "handle the situation" but gave no details as to what that meant and also said it wouldn't be until she "got back", which would likely be Thursday. Today is Friday.... Again, unacceptable customer service practices. At this point, I'm probably not going to get any money back since I'm posting these reviews, but maybe it will save you from the same experience and teach them that customer service shouldn't take a WEEK...

Tarsha J.

Yelp
The front desk is very helpful. It's in the middle of everywhere. A issue happen and and it was immediately addressed and the price is reasonable. For these reasons, I would definitely be back! The atmosphere makes me want to consider moving to this area

ann marie c.

Yelp
Nope won't be back - Front desk lied to us and judged me thinking I booked on Expedia I didn't I used my chase sapphire preferred members only card It's not a great location I used for my points and for rooms for free and you know what it shows - FYI there is a newer side to this so if you use expeida make sure you pay for ocean view bc they will not upgrade you especially if you have little kids i noticed all the kids w families are on the crapper side and all the "couples are on the newer side " aka older adults so unless you need an elevator day for age or disability you are stuck on the old crappy side like us - we were surrounded by smaller kids and they were loud like elephants past 10pm - I complained and all I got was an email hours later saying one would be checking out the next day ! Wow thanks !! I miss Hampton inn and surfside in near carova ! The check in lady was rude and just plane not in mood until I told her I yelp and I never be back I am a consumer advocate Pool is smaller than pic - towels are sucky No freebies like other places happy hours and cookies ! Not here !! Never again ! Also photos are of dust on the room decorations at least an inch and the fire alarm was brown and possible old not working as well with dust al over it. Gym is under construction not open Free water in breakfast area was not open all the time People do go in and get coffee all day long though Breakfast is crowded from 9-10am

Beth K.

Yelp
Thisis a great place to stay especially if rain is in the forecast. Indoor pool and small gym. close to the beach . decorated nicely and clean for being an older property. Great breakfast in lobby in a.m. you don't need to use your car since so many restaurants are within walking distance. quiet beaches...relaxing

Courtney L.

Yelp
Another delightful vacation at Shutters. One thing I noticed is how clean the staff keeps this place. Being by the beach requires constant glass cleaning, and there on it every day. There's security cameras in every corner so obviously security is a priority and we really appreciate it. The breakfast cafe is such a cool perk: complimentary bacon and sausage, each on alternating days; do-it-yourself waffles, scrambled eggs and sausage gravy, bagels and cream cheese, English muffins, yogurt, coffee and so much more every morning, THANK YOU. The outdoor pool is lovely during the day, and the indoor pool with hot tub was wonderful at night. Not to mention our oceanview room was perfect. We cannot wait to come back next year.

Mike H.

Yelp
We stayed here for two nights after hurricane dorian hit the Outer Banks while we waited to get into our village. I was a bit skeptical about staying at a "two star" hotel for sub $100 per night, but I was pleasantly surprised when we arrived. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Front desk, lounge and breakfast area were very clean. I got a "dune view" room, which means oceanfront, ground floor. We litterly walked out the door from our room, to the walkway and less than 100ft from the beach. Our room was a standard 2 queen room. It was a little on the small side for 4 people, but it was clean. Bedding and towels were also nice an clean. I would not have any issue staying here again or recommending it others!

Bryan J.

Yelp
What a lucky find! This was a perfect stay, so much so that we had to extend our stay an additional night. We had a 4th floor room with an ocean view in the tower building, an awesome vacation. We already have reservations for next year, we can't wait!!

Kenia L.

Yelp
So when I write reviews for hotels, I'm rating based on my overall experience, not just the actual hotel room so keep that in mind. This was my first time in Outer Banks and overall I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. It isn't the Marriott but for a beach front hotel, it was pretty great. As soon as I arrived I was greeted by Gretta at the front and she was so incredibly friendly and welcoming. I had no problem checking in and was given my room card. We stayed in the Tower building which is their newer building. It's pricer but based on the pictures I saw on their website, the Tower rooms looked a lot nicer than the main building rooms. I have to be honest here, when I walked into my room I was a little surprised as I was expecting a room a lot nicer looking. It wasn't horrible but let's just say the pictures online made the room look like a 5 star hotel and that's not really what my room looked like. The bathroom was small and the lighting of the overall room was bad. The only good light we got was when we opened the shutters which we couldn't do the whole time since people would walk by. We stayed on the first floor with a view of dunes btw. The beds were comfortable and the AC worked perfectly. The shower had good water pressure and didn't change temperature like a lot of beach hotels tend to do. Everything was clean and housekeeping made sure we had fresh towels everyday. The hotel has an outdoor and indoor pool but the deepest it goes is 4ft, which really isn't ideal for adults. There's also a hot tub and a small gym. The beach is literally right in front with a private entrance just for the hotel guests. There's also a really nice gazebo on the path going to the beach. The hotel also has free hot breakfast just FYI. Overall, I had a great time at this hotel. The price was right, they had great customer service, the room was clean, the location is great, and we got free breakfast. I would stay here again.

K R.

Yelp
Great location and friendly staff. That's where the goodness ends. The room's ac dripped onto the carpet covering the entire floor on one side of the bed. The carpet smelled like mildew. When I walked in to use the bathroom the seat was up and there was dried pee all over the seat. I am not kidding. Some stranger's pee already on the toilet seat of the hotel room I just paid $284 for. I took pics but will spare your stomach this time. Bed is also too soft. My feet started to itch after staying there. It must be the mildew carpet fungus forming. Whatever you do, don't stay in room 201.

Wendy L.

Yelp
Stayed there last week, my 3rd stay at this location over the last 3-4 years with a variety of people: one was a solo trip, one with my mother, and this last visit with my husband. The first visit was great, super impressed. People friendly, room spotless, nice view. Second visit was also great but the cracks began to creep up and I rationalized those away. Beach access is great as is the view if you get the 3rd or 4th floor ocean view. This last visit? Eh. The room was a good bit more than what I remembered paying (thanks inflation, also peak vacation time) and I called to confirm the reservation a few days prior. No one mentioned at the time the key detail of the elevator being out of order and the room was booked on the top floor. My husband has RA and climbing anything is murder on the joints. If I had known the elevator was going to be out of order most of the week we were there, I would've asked for a lower floor or cancelled altogether, but no. No one thought to relay this key detail. So, we arrive July 10 at night, I check in at the desk and hear the astounding news regarding the elevator and asked when it would be repaired and received the condescending reply from the snarky desk clerk "well, you got the good room view, so..." like that's supposed to make it better? Kinda dismissive and not helpful at all. This did not help my mood after a 13 hr drive and a banging headache. Elevator wasn't repaired until Thursday and the housekeeper told me that it had been out since the previous Thursday, her day off, so my view of a formerly favorite location slipped further. The fridge in the room didn't shut all the way (you had to practically kick the door shut) and frost had built up in the back pretty thickly, so anything in there didn't cool all the way. Wasn't a big deal since all we kept in there was coffee creamer and bottles of water, but other guests might want to actually put food in there and it would be nice for it to not spoil. Housekeeping must never rotate the mattresses because when you sit down on the side with the table, there is a noticeable dip. Beds are comfortable though, so there's that. Sit on the side nearer the window and you'll find that it is much more firm. They don't vacuum until you leave. I get that they won't change linens unless you request in order to save money on laundry costs, since it also seems crazy to me to change sheets and towels every day for a week long stay by a guest, but they can vacuum every day. Doesn't take long to do that. When I checked out on the morning of July 16, I informed the desk clerk on duty of the iffy room fridge and he dutifully took down the info and printed out my receipt, which totaled over 2500.00 for a six day stay. Did I get a thank you? No. Was I asked how my stay was? No. Did I get a "Hope to see you again!" No. I was handed my receipt and summarily ignored. I don't think I'll stay here again. Something has happened here and I can't put my finger on where, when or what, but I was pretty disappointed and will find other lodgings on my next visit to OBX.

Yelp
Shutters on the Banks offers a comfortable facility and a beautiful, convenient beach in the Kitty Hawk area. If you have the extra money I feel the tower rooms are of better value. They are newly renovated, spacious, and meticulously clean with a beautiful view as we were on the third floor. Very scenic and surprisingly peaceful. Early in the morning, we walked out to the beach to watch the sunrise. Wonderful experience. We also had the fortune of seeing several dolphins. The staff here are wonderful. My fiance and I planned a surprise for his mother, and they let us into her room before she was due to arrive in order to set up her gift. We truly appreciate that. His mother was so happy! We also appreciated that the tower building had private balconies and an elevator. We only stayed here for a night, but we were very happy with the view. The bed was relatively comfortable. A bit firm for my fiance's liking. The pillows were soft and plentiful. We also took advantage of the coupon for Dairy Queen that was on the room key. Great added benefit. CONS: The shower is beautiful and roomy but didn't have a door. I found that a bit odd. We didn't visit the outdoor pool, but the indoor pool area was quite small and crowded. During the time of year we visited OBX the ocean was still very cold - so I guess that may be why so many people were interested in the indoor pool. Lots of loud, splashy kids lol. The breakfast left a lot to be desired. Microwaved bacon, powdered/frozen eggs, waffle maker, cereal and oatmeal. There were assorted breads, but I didn't like the danish I had and the bagel was damp. I appreciated the coffee and the boiled egg I had. The parking lot fills quickly when there are a lot of guests in the hotel. We forwarned! The room was gorgeous, but the surroundings aren't the most romantic in my opinion unless you plan on spending a lot of time in the room. If you are planning a trip with your sweetie, definitely book the tower room (without question). Shutters is also expensive considering other options in the area. We stayed in Corolla for two nights before our stay at Shutters (Kitty Hawk) and it was $100 less per night.

Kat K.

Yelp
The area was really nice, the path to get into the beach was nice too. The rooms were very clean and looked amazing But there was a few problems with our stay, first the elevator was out of service for the entire stay and they were unable to get it fixed so my family and I had difficulty getting up the stairs with our health conditions, second in the room you could hear everything around, someone was moving their chairs the entire stay and it was annoying, we heard people's music the entire stay and worst of all there was someone smoking weed and the smell was coming into the room, I thought it would be a relaxing stay but I didn't think someone would start smoking weed at 8:00 in the morning! I probably would not stay there again.

Spencer J.

Yelp
The hotel is okay. It's definitely been tweaked, and worked on throughout its times on the OBX. The reason for my score is because of the comfort, and price. The room had plenty of issues. You had to practically run the air conditioner constantly or it would be room would be humid within minutes. It's a great location. The breakfast was also very good.

M. M.

Yelp
We spend a couple a nights in room 115. The room was okay, carpet smelled aweful, coffee maker was broke and at night we could hear people from 3 sides talking and kids running around till 11pm above us, because walls are so thin and not insulated. Next time we would book the room above us, because we loved the location. Bring some air freshener and a water cooker just in case

Tammy S.

Yelp
Reasonable priced and was very nice and clean. The rooms where decorated really cute. The beds where comfy. Most delicious coffee in there lobby. The beds where comfy. The motel was right next to the ocean. I loved the place

Sharad S.

Yelp
We, family of 4 - 2 adults 2 kids, had a nice time at Shutters on the Banks hotel in Kill Devil Hills, NC. The room wasn't too terribly but but it was enough for two nights. Next time I'll have to get something bigger. The great perk was direct access to the beach. Just a short walking distance away from the hotel you can enjoy the private beach. We absolutely appreciated that very much. The complimentary breakfast tasted well. Just short distance away is a really good pizza place (Sal's) and Thai food.

Cheryl B.

Yelp
The Outer Banks is not to be compared with many of the more commercial or "exclusive" type beach areas you may have visited. As you head down NC 12 S you realize the weathered bungalows are peppered with salty hotels/motels that have been in business there for as many years as I can remember. Our stay this past weekend was at the Colony IV. The staff was so accommodating and kind. Rooms were clean, beds comfy and a nice continental breakfast was a great way to kick start your day! You won't find this to be the Ritz - its a beach community and the memories I have from my summer vacations here were revived when we opened the door to our room. Small bath and single sink - so what. No flat screen TV - so what. The ability to open the door to the balcony and take in the view of the ocean that provides a backdrop to the sea oats dancing in the salt air breeze and hear waves crashing and gulls screaming for a bite to eat - PRICELESS!!

Yelp
Thank you for an excellent place to stay for our first family beach vacation! We have stayed here twice. Pets are not allowed at this hotel. We really enjoyed out stay here. It was our first stay and I was unsure of what to expect because I've had bad experiences in the past with other beach hotels. I enjoyed every minute of our stay here and I was very impressed with this hotel. The exterior was well maintained and our room was very clean & everything seemed like it was brand new inside of our room. We had a dune view room on the second floor, but we could still see the ocean from our balcony. We had a dune view room with a balcony. The hotel has recently been remodeled so all of the rooms are modern and everything still feels new. The room service cleaned our room each day and we never had to wait long before it was done - a few times I was even shocked that they had been there so quickly. The complimentary breakfast was nice to snack on when we first woke up and ventured out somewhere else for a larger meal. The staff was very friendly. Anytime we asked for extra towels we never had to wait. We had some issues with our room key deactivating but the staff was super helpful right away. There is a nice gazebo to watch the sunset and sunrise & an area to rinse off the sand. I loved that this part of the beach didn't seem overcrowded and you don't have to walk far at all to get to the ocean & it was easily accessible. The pool area was really nice. There is an indoor pool/hot tub & an outdoor pool area.

Yelp
We stayed at Shutters for a night on my boyfriends birthday in Dec. we had to check in late due to arrival but they where so helpful and kind. It was a great check in. The room was so nice and we had everything we needed. The room was facing the beach so it was great to hear the water and have easy access to the beach. The hotel is located around food and great spots to check out. Plan on coming back during the summer if I can get a room at a great rate. The breakfast area in the lobby is so awesome. Great options for ppl and it's amazing ppl still offer this for their guest. I've stayed at large hotels that don't offer this type of breakfast options. Keeping showing your guest their value - we appreciate it.

Yelp
We have stayed at Shutters 3 times with no complaints. Friendly staff, quick checkin. There are very limited rooms with ocean views due to sand dunes. There is, however, direct access to the Beach with a plank walkway. There is a gazebo with a view, outdoor showers to clean off sand. Indoor and outdoor pool. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Continental breakfast is good. Parking is free with plenty of spots. Prices are very reasonable for the area. I would definitely recommend this to anyone for a short stay. Walking distance to Outer Banks Brewing Station and some surf shops.

Yelp
I recently stayed here for three nights. I wanted to go through VRBO but my mom suggested this motel. It is locally owned so I thought why not give them a chance. I wasn't very impressed. Pros: friendly staff, relatively inexpensive. I think we paid around $160 a night after taxes. Cons: location, room condition, amenities. The room had a really funky smell. Not sure what this was from. Also the room was advertised as having a kitchenette, when in fact it had a small coffee pot in the bathroom and a mini fridge and mini microwave next to the bed. There were two queen sized beds with nice linens but the mattresses were rock hard and very uncomfortable. Also the toilet was super hard to flush. The walls were so thin I could hear the person in the next room snoring through the wall. The pool and spa were very small and over crowded. The beach access was direct from the hotel which was nice but people were smoking all over the place. There were two rinse showers and a fish cleaning station but no foot rinse- weird. They offered a breakfast which had recently been improved we were told by the desk staff. But it was just a continental breakfast with a waffle iron. No meat offered which is silly, throw in some bacon or sausage and call it a hot breakfast. The coffee was good though- a nice medium roast. I think the thing that annoyed me the most was that we though we were booking an ocean view room, not ocean front, but ocean view and we did not have that at all. We had a concrete stair case two steps from our door and a view of the parking lot. The only thing that made this motel different from an Econolodge is that they had plastic plantation shutters over the windows, which would have been way cooler if our view was of the beach or sand dunes or ocean, but it was not. So that novelty wore off after about one minute. I would not stay here again. It lacked character and was uncomfortable. If your looking for a cheap, noisy, place to take the kids- by all means this is for you.

Yelp
We stayed here because they were on the ocean. Best decision...wonderful hotel! Pay a little extra for an ocean view buy ask for an upper floor...out room was ground level and our view was of the wall holding the sand dune. But there was a nice area to sit and you could hear the waves! Non smoking hotel...yea...but ample approved smoking areas. Nice gazebo where you can sit and watch the ocean! Nice clean beach area...bring some chairs! Ample breakfast...one morning eggs and bacon, the next eggs and sausage...with biscuits and gravy, cereal, and waffles! If you stay in OBX I recommend Jimmy's Seafood Buffet or John's Drive In.

Yelp
Have stayed here many time over the years. Breakfast is include and they have two wafflebots (pancakes suck!). There are two pools (indoor and outdoor) and they are both very swimable. They are located within walking /stumbling distance to several eating and drinking establishments. The WiFi worked like a champ for me. Everyone that works here is nice and friendly. There is a nice gazebo on the dunes that give a great view on the ocean. I have their webcam bookmarked, since it has a view of the gazebo and more importantly of the ocean.

Yelp
First, everyone who I came in contact with at the motel was very friendly and pleasant. When we arrived after 9pm I could tell my questions about our room location were a touch unsettling for the manager who was in a office behind the front desk. She popped out to assist the desk clerk in getting us checked in and gave the clerk some terms like "dune view" to describe our room location. I didn't have an issue with our room, I just wanted to know for future reference what to ask for when we made reservations if we wanted to look out the window and see the water. The manager seemed less defensive after she and I chatted - I guess she realized I wasn't going to complain. We got in the room and within 4.5 seconds the kids were ready to hit the pool. Turns out they were ready every single night to hit the pool. Our room was *tiny*. I'm sure I was overly optimistic when we brought two kids and two coolers of food with us for a week's vacation. Next time I'll definitely reserve a room in the newer section and with amenities. Nevertheless, the actual location of the room was spot on (other than the public trashcan right outside the door - but it had to be somewhere). We walked out of the room and right on to the boardwalk that led past the gazebo where you could sit and watch the sunrise, right down to the beach. Toting all the beach gear was a breeze. It made for many trips to the water to watch the sunrise and set as well as moonlit crab watching. In the rooms the AC units were working overtime and our's almost kept up perfectly. The tiled entry was a handy spot to drop beach gear and shoes. Again, space was very limited in the room, as well as in the bathroom, for four. I wanted to "recycle" our bath towels each day but they were so dang fluffy - and there was nowhere to hang them to dry for reusing - so we weren't able to take advantage of that offer. Additionally, it seemed wasteful to be given two new boxes of soap every morning when we could've easily kept using the bars until they were gone. My only issue with a room in this older area of the motel is - it had a definite stinky smell and we took it home with us. Our clothes all had to be washed twice to get the stench out. It's that old, musty grandma smell - you know what I'm talking about. We even had a bag of brownies we didn't finish on the trip we tried to eat after we got back. You could taste the smell on them so they promptly went into the trash. The free breakfast was, by far, the best I've seen in a motel in a very long time. Although the juice was watered down, the double waffle irons and the sausage gravy made up for it. Again, there were several folks working the area, keeping things stocked and cleaned up and just down right being friendly. You couldn't beat it. So, be sure you know what view you want when you make your reservations, try to stay in the newer area if you're not a fan of old lady smells and expect everyone to be super friendly!

Yelp
This place is wonderful. This is my first time here but it is super clean. Everyone is very nice and it's super centrally located. 2 pools kept up very well and about 100 yards to pristine beach! Chairs and umbrellas available. Soft sand. Not a speck of litter or trash and lifeguards too! Also not too crowded. Wonderful family atmosphere. I can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Nice rooms, great continental breakfast, comfy beds, clean place. Beautiful gazebo and landscaping. Convenient walkway to the beach. Great parking, 2 nice pools and a hot tub. Laundry facilities are a nice amenity. Wi-fi is great. Forgot to clean our room one day, called the front desk, someone was here in less than a minute- honest! Room was cleaned, fresh towels delivered, beds made, trash emptied, carpets vacuumed-all within 20 minutes. Overlook forgiven. We had an efficiency. Good deal for a small family of 4 who doesn't need a GIANT house for the week. We'll definitely stay again.

We absolutely loved our long weekend stay here. Friendly staff, very clean, free breakfast and our room was ready hours before check in which is always a plus. I would highly recommend this place to anyone!!

Yelp
I purchased this hotel stay on Groupon. This place was much more than I expected for the price unpaid. It was one of the cleanest hotels I have ever stayed in. Hats off to the cleaning crew. The office staff was very pleasant and helpful. The room was plenty big for myself and my 3 children. We will definitely stay here again. Thank you for a great stay!
