The Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon is an awe-inspiring landmark and a must-visit for anyone in Myanmar. Its golden stupa, glistening under the sun or lit up at night, creates a breathtaking sight. Beyond its beauty, it’s a place where I always find myself connecting with locals and having wonderful conversations, adding a personal and meaningful layer to the visit.
The atmosphere is deeply spiritual, with locals and visitors alike offering prayers and making their rounds. Exploring the intricate details, from the smaller shrines to the cultural significance of the planetary posts, is a fascinating experience.
Visiting at sunset adds a magical touch as the changing light enhances the pagoda’s beauty. Be prepared to walk barefoot, as shoes and socks are not allowed inside the grounds, and dress modestly to respect local customs. A small entry fee applies for foreigners, but the experience is absolutely worth it!
