Stopped into The Side Project Cellar on Friday evening. Ordered two drafts, Side Project Abricot Du Fermier Blend #3 and Side Project Raspberry Biere Du Pays.
Quality
If I had more time I would have hung out at The Side Project Cellar all day. As the tasting room for Side Project Brewing, they showcase their incredible creations as well as have a great assortment of unique guest beers from across the world. During my visit I tried two Side Project beers, Abricot Du Fermier Blend #2 and Raspberry Biere Du Pays. I loved them both. The Abricot Du Fermier Blend #3 was a saison aged with apricots in French oak wine barrels for over a year. It is a very sour beer, but one that balances well with the fruit. It is extremely refreshing, making it a wonderful beer for a warm day. The Raspberry Biere Du Pays was excellent as well. This one took a table saison and aged it in an oak foedre with red and black raspberries. This one had a gorgeous red color and was surprisingly light. It reminded me a lot of an acidic white wine and really gained some amazing flavor from the berries. And although I only got to try two, I am fairly certain that the menu was filled with nothing but hits. These are complex beers that require time and patience, and Side Project is clearly putting in the work.
Quantity
The menu clearly details exactly what you should expect from your beer. From size to glass to temperature, they are very transparent about what you will get.
Value
Draft beers fall between $5 and $11, which is a little pricey, but well worth it. They also have some expensive and rare bottles available for true beer connoisseurs.
Ambiance
The Side Project Cellar is located in Maplewood area of St. Louis. The tasting room is found in this cute brick building in a quaint little area full of stores and singe family homes. The inside of the space is beautiful. Wood almost anywhere you look. It has an almost farmhouse vibe, the perfect match for the beers. The bar itself has a strange w-shape with an opening in the center, but it allows for a few extra stools. The space also has some seating towards the front entrance with a long couch and a few tables. They have a bookshelf full of games and books about beer for guests planning to hang out a while. The music selections were awesome, focused around indie and alternative rock. And as the sun started to go down the space became even cooler as the dim lighting gives the place a nice intimate feel. This would absolutely be my hangout if I lived in the area, and I completely understand why people will line up outside for their beer releases.
Crowd
The tasting room was very busy when I arrived. Almost every seat around the bar was filled and another small group had congregated towards the entrance. This is definitely a place that draws a more sophisticated beer crowd, folks willing to shell out some more money for specialty beers. It was primarily older guys and they all seemed to know the staff well.
Service
Friendly, knowledgable, and not pretentious. I will be honest, I was concerned this place would be beer snob central. I am happy to report I could not be more wrong. While they clearly are doing special things with their brews and have an incredible collection of guest beers available, they are just happy to share them. And though I may not recommend it for beer rookies, the staff is great at guiding guests through the complicated menu to find something they will enjoy.
Parking
The Side Project Cellar is right next to a large public parking lot on Marietta Avenue.
Extra
The Side Project Cellar is simply fantastic. Great beer, an amazing space, and super friendly staff. You are going to spend a bit more on beer here, but it is absolutely worth it. Just get ready for an incredible experience and allow the bartenders to guide you in the right direction.
