"It’s fair to say that a trip to the hammam isa quintessential Moroccan experience and is a salve for the soul as much as it is for the body. Fes’s bathhouses may not have the sheer wow factor of those in Marrakech, but they perhaps offer a more intimate and authentic experience at more wallet-friendly prices. Yoursafest bet is to take a taxi to Nausikaa in the Ville Nouvelleand hang with locals while being treated toa deluxe treatment which involves a luxurious steam, followed by an enthusiastic scrub-down ( gommage ) with an exfoliating mitt ( kessa ) and olive oil soap, before getting slathered in rose-scented claywhich leaves the skin baby-soft and sparkling. It also offers excellent pedicures and waxing. If your heart is set on goingold-school, be aware that the medina’s hammams are not always as hot, nor as clean, as you might like. In the medina, the pink and womblikehammam at Dar Bensouda is perfect if you’d prefer a private to a public hammam. It’s properly hot, and the local women who do the gommage mix their treatment lotions with lavender and chamomile as well as with other healing herbs and spices.A treatment costs 350 dirhams. The Riad Laaroussa provides a luxurious, candlelit experience. It’s the place to go if you want to experience a hammam with yourpartner, followed by sublimely relaxing massage. Have a cocktail in the courtyard afterwards; the orange- and cinnamon-infused gin and tonic is legend."

If I went there with my own soap, shampoo and did everything myself I would pay 10dh. If I purchased soap and shampoo from them, it would be 16dh. In both cases I would rate them 3 stars as the place wasn't cleanest or nicest looking. But as it was my first hammam experience ever I went for full package which included 1h massage and I can't help feeling ripped off. It is not a lot of money especially with massage but unfortunately the massage part last basically 2 minutes. So I paid 116dh for another woman wash me, soap me and scrub me and rub my shoulders for 2 minutes. My Moroccan friend laughed at me that I paid so much :(

I liked it, but do take to heart this experience is another way of living. This is not a spa style sauna by any means. Take your own towels, slippers, shampoo or any lotion you enjoy. And scrubing glove and hairbrush. You will leave this place with your hair damp, so do like the locals and cover it with a scarf until you get to the hotel. Yes, the floor looks dirty, but that's why there's so much flowing water all over the place. And soap, so much soap. Go with a friend and be amazed that sisterhood truly translates without the need for language.

It's an interesting social experience if you want to see how Moroccan women take a hammam, but in terms of relaxation, being pampered and cleaned it is a horrible experience! They make you pay 150DH (when entrance costs 13DH and the scrubing lady 20DH). They didn't have slippers so I had to wait bare feet on cold, wet and dirty floor and then they gave me really old dirty slippers. I expected they would give me a new rubbing glove and small plastic brush for washing the hair, since I understand I paid for them, instead they just borrowed them from other women nearby. They make you sit and lie down straight on the dirty floor. They rub you like crazy, it hurts and it can't be good for the skin. The "massage" lasts 3 minutes while you're lying on the floor. They didn't have clean towels at the end so the scrubing lady took her own very old dirty looking towel from her handbag and gave it to me. The lady in the changing room who organises things seems to be in constant conflict with the other ladies. It's a bit distressing. There are no hairdriers at the end and I didn't have anything to cover my hair. It was rushed, I felt very dirty and I didn't want to go walk on the street with wet hair in the winter. I understand it is a glimpse into the every day life of the Moroccan women some of whom were there with a little child or a baby. In the changing room, a crying baby pooed all around me on the floor. It was all way too much for me and I was very distraught. Authentic experience probably but I felt violated, dirty and taken advantage of and I went back to my hotel and took a long shower which felt like complete luxury

The hammam is cheap and the massage is good, feels like a genuine experience. However, this place is not exactly the cleanest establishment.
