The airport is great, it will be really good for the economy in Siem Reap by making it accessible by larger planes.
Most airports in major cities are some distance from the CBD. So whilst people may be unhappy that it has moved further out, it's not unusual in terms of airport locations.
The highway that has been built to cater for the airport is fantastic. Very fast route, only two (1 each way) lanes though so if the passenger demand increases significantly they may look to expand that. It took around 50 minutes from centre of town to the airport around midday on a Saturday.
The check in process was extremely smooth with multiple counters open. The same story with the security and passport control.
The airport itself is opening up new services and facilities weekly. On 18 Nov the below facilities were at the international section of the airport.
- free wifi (fast connection, no time limit or password required)
- snack kiosk
- coffee club kiosk (serving coffee and other drinks like juice etc and pastries)
- dim sum restaurant in the food court
- food court is set for expansion with two other vendors due to open in the near future (burger king and crushly)
- toilets, baby change rooms, accessible toilets
- outdoor courtyard (smoking area)
- brand new lounge currently costing $35USD for entry. Not partnered with any airlines or miles group yet, however they anticipate to do so in the future.
- PowerPoint charging stations located near the gates (not in the seats but along a bench against the wall)
- ample drinking water stations (warm and hot water available)
- souvenir gift shop
- multiple duty free stores selling a range of alcohol, tobacco, clothing, accessories and makeup
- air conditioning
- soft calming music playing in the gates
Overall the airport is great and will only continue to improve
