4.5 stars rounded up! The three of us paid $422 through Booking.com for a room with two double beds. Overall, I'm very happy with our choice!
Pro:
-Lovely staff! Big thanks to TU, MICHAEL, and DIANA for their hospitality! Everyone was so friendly, it made our stay feel like a second home instead of just some random place to crash at at night. TU and MICHAEL were great fun to chat with :)
-Awesome lodge decor that's perfect for a winter stay! I love that this place isn't a soulless chain hotel. The main lobby was beautiful and cozy, with a running fireplace, a piano, and perfect amount of table space and comfortable couches. Honestly, the lobby was probably the deciding factor for us picking this place when we compared hotels within the same price range. There's also a second lobby that's bright and airy with board games for kids!
-Pretty happy with the food and beverage offers. Breakfast was solid and nicely presented, and there's unlimited tea, coffee, and hot chocolate you can enjoy in the lobby.
-the overall space was just really well maintained. We appreciated the patio hangout space, the two lobbies available, and the firepit and fairy lights outside. Everything felt organized, well run, clean, and romantic.
Con: fairly minor, mainly has to do with how dated the room was...
-the beds and pillows were too soft for me. I felt like I was sleeping on jello :(
-the walls were very thin; be prepared to hear conversations outside the room even if the other guests were only speaking at normal volume.
-The three breakfasts we had were all the same. They were good, but it would've been nice to have some variety. On the upside, the breakfast room was bright and elegant, so it was a great dining experience.
-the room itself (#39) was disappointing. It's pretty small and cramped. There was no desk or seating options, so we had to sit and eat in our beds. The lights were also really dim, the kind of yellowish glow that makes reading anything a huge strain. It made the room feel unpleasant and dingy, like walking into a long-neglected basement with a single lightbulb.
-the heater, while functional, was way too loud! Imagine someone showering right next to you, except it's the heater.
We were told that the hotel was at less than 50% occupancy during our stay. We walked by at least one double room that was empty, but had much bigger space. Not sure why we didn't get that room; maybe it was reserved for someone who booked direct instead of through third-party like us. Oh well.
Overall, we had a great stay and would come back. The history here is fascinating too, as it used to be a TB care center; there's stories of haunting, but we didn't experience anything weird. A quick Google confirms that it's been the set for several movies, including Annabelle: The Creation (2017). Finally, if you're lucky (unlucky?), you can potentially see deer AND BEARS that come looking for scraps! Despite the few minor issues, we were all really happy with our choice of staying here.
