"For a subtler aloha shirt or shell dress (a simple shift), try this place in Hilo’s old downtown. Opened in 1985, it's now a second-generation shop steeped in local rites and rhythms. Designer Sig Zane creates patterns based on traditional plants and legends, some incorporating elements from kapa (mulberry-bark paper fabric) orthe kupukupu fern, symbolizing continual growth and expansion."

I originally went into 16 about two months ago because I was tired of wearing scrubs for my work. I bought my first shirt and I was addicted because they’re so well-made. Their designs are so beautiful. I always walk into the store a few weeks and I find a new style that catches my eye. Had more compliments wearing those shirts than anything I’ve ever worn.

Beautiful unique clothes with an elegant Island vibe and some Japanese inspiration and handcraft. Not tacky, good quality, honest and well made. Some pieces are a bit pricier but it’s worth the money.

Google
While it is a nice store, the older female employee was not very friendly at all. Highly unusual as this is a Hawaiian brand and made in Hawaii. For such a high price point for a shirt she could have used a better demeanor when we came in very politely and were kind and friendly.

My favorite Hawaiian clothing designer! Great shop in Hilo! Clothes are well made and beautiful!!! Staff are very helpful and just great people! love, Love, LOVE it. Thanks for helping choose the PERFECT shirt for my daughters wedding!

Nice selection of inhouse designed Hawaiian shirts. Pricing is not for the feign of heart.

Beautiful shop of men’s and ladies Hawaiian wear. The selection was minimal when I visited. Purchased a top and precut squares to sew your own quilt.

Google
Super nice quality aloha shirts at a super high price! Love the shirts and own some but be ready to pay $114 for a short sleeved shirt. They become collectors items but I wouldn't spend the $$ on it if I were a tourist only going to wear one or two times. However if you work in the islands and want to impress at a work meeting, these are THE shirts that stand out over the rest. Hope that helps!

Best aloha shirt designs ever. All local. Always a small production run.

Yelp
Awesome clothing designs hand made locally!! Great service, well worth the trip to Hilo from Kona.

Yelp
We visited Sig Zane in Hilo, it's a beautiful store, the futures and dressing room. The employees were chill, not in your face, helpful and friendly. The selection of shirts had sizes up to 4X. It's definitely worth the visit for a well made designer aloha shirt. Women's selection was limited, but there were also accessories available, handbags, jewelry, and T-shirts.

Yelp
Customer service here is great and the fresh designs are always welcomed. The shirts are not cheap but also understandable given that they do not mass produce the shirts. The quality of the shirts are nice but they are a little stiff and the sizes tend to run large.

Cherry D.

Yelp
The staff has all the pretense of a fifth avenue boutique but none of the quality. A sleeve had raw edges on a shirt I purchased and had to be completely removed and redeem. Fortunately for me, I have this skill set. Otherwise I would have thrown more money at a very overpriced shirt. There is the perception of quality but not the existence of quality. Sadly, we will not make a special trip to Hilo on our future vacations.

Yelp
The designs are incredible. The staff is incredible too. The store is clean and amazing!

Yelp
They have the most simple yet beautiful designs that I really appreciate. Quality of their cut and design is very apparent and worth the price.

Yelp
It was my first time here and it was a nice experience. Very welcoming, open, clean, and comfortable. The workers were really nice and helpful. They knew each product very well. I was able to catch a quick glimpse of mr.zane himself, he seemed happy to see all the customers in the store. There is a lot of free parking around the building. You can tell the quality of the clothing is superb. The feel of the fabric feels beautiful. Now that i know which styles i fit, i can order more online. Definitely worth it. You should at least own one thing from the store. They have all kinds of sizes for men and women. They had these little cute bags and pareos too.

Yelp

Yelp
This is one of the places and that is unique to Hilo. Sig Zane is known for vibrant unique aloha shirts. I'm sure you must have seen guys wearing them at weddings, parties or to work. Many politicians and businessmen love to wear these iconic aloha shirts The store is right in downtown Hilo and absolutely gorgeous with their wood shelves and flooring. The workers here were very nice and even showed us new prints which weren't on the sales floor yet. They do have dresses and tops for women but they are more widely know for their aloha shirts. The aloha shirts are pricey and over $100 each. But there are a limited amount that are made and they are good quality. You see locals of all ages wearing these aloha shirts. The aloha shirts have an old school look yet trendy; somehow they seem timeless. Sig Zane himself chooses the designs and colors. It has a certain look, so you can spot these aloha shirts right away. If you can't get to Hilo, they have a website and a store in downtown on Oahu, Sig on Smith St. The Aloha shirts here are a little different, more contemporary aloha shirts. Kūha'o Zane (Sig's son), Director of Design and Marketing for Sig Zane/Founder of SigZaneKaiao runs this store and chooses the designs and colors. Every local in Hawaii has a Sig Zane. ******** When in Hilo town make sure you visit this store to get a Sig Zane

Yelp
I have to update my review. What impressed me was their customer service. I have about 8 Sig Zane Aloha Shirts. I bought one about 3-4 months ago. I probably wore it about 3-4 times in that timeframe. Recently, after washing it I noticed that there was a small part near the neckline that was coming apart. It looked like a defective stitch or something. I called the store and talked to a nice lady. I told her what happened and she said to mail the shirt back and they would send me another shirt or a different shirt of my choice. Since I was going to Hilo, I told her I would stop by the store. I went today and I told the people working that I talked to a lady and told them what she said. They never argued or disagreed. They didn't even look at the shirt. They just wanted to make sure I was happy. A lot of stores would ask for the receipt or haggle with the customer. Instead, Sig Zane just wanted to make sure the customer was taken care of. This is how clothing stores should be. I am very happy, not only with the shirts I buy, but also awesome customer service.

Yelp
Love dropping by Sig Zane when I'm in Hilo. Clothing can seem a little pricey but it's worth it, and when you're walking down the street everyone knows it's a Sig Zane (at least in Hawaii). Only thing is womens selections (mostly referring to tops) can be more scarce than the men's. So if you're looking for a certain type of outfit, good to call ahead and see if they have it.

Yelp
My fave aloha shirts. Beautiful designs, meaningful, and of the highest quality. The core of my professional wardrobe. I acquired them about 10 years ago when they were very affordable. I'm sure they will last at least another 10. The bayfront shop is neat. Nice people. New designs are super cool. Hope to add another to the collection soon....

Yelp
Flew over for work! Finished, rented a car and drove to SZD. Only to find out they were closed and renovating to accommodate customers. Oh well ‍ at least I got some Mochi!!

Yelp
I'll admit, it took me a while to appreciate and jump on the Sig Zane train. For one, you can't deem this place as just an "aloha shirt" store. If you do then you're going to get sticker shock at the prices. If all you needed was a "nice" aloha shirt, you could go to Macy's and find something there. You come here looking for art on the canvas of clothing. Sometimes, simplicity is the hardest form to conquer and the easiest to overlook. This is what Sig Zane has mastered in terms of taking the natural elements of Hawaii and translating it into modern art. Wearable modern art. He's been doing it so long and does it so well that you can tell when other designers or clothing companies are trying to imitate his style. As they say, imitation is the highest form of flattery, so job well done Mr. Zane. Btw, side note, on one visit to the store last year, my family actually met Mr. Zane himself! He was super nice, friendly and really approachable. Very enthusiastic about his clothes and about my kids that were in there! Tips: If you see something you like, in your size just get it! Like all art pieces, they're made in limited quantities, so once it's gone, it's gone!

Yelp
So many beautiful designs that I wanted to purchase but unfortunately don't even have size Large in stock. I even checked online and still couldn't find my size. They need to make more of the common sizes!

Yelp
Sig Zane Designs is perhaps the top Hawaiian apparel designer in Hawaii, PERIOD. His designs are inspired by nature and it's many treasures - flowers, ferns, sea creatures, trees, or historical places. Each design comes with a story about how he came up with the design (i.e., he describes the significance of the flower). He uses very standard colors (blacks, browns, blues) and doesn't hesitate using bright and vibrant colors (reds, oranges, teal blue, yellows) in his base colors and designs. The clothes are made with dyed 100% cotton, which make for a very comfortable and long lasting clothes. Sig Zane has been selling his line of Hawaiian clothes for over 25 years. He has become a national and international designer sensation. I went into the Hilo, HI store today and the place was flooded with guests from Japan and all across the US. Prices are on the high side, but I believe it matches the quality designs and product materials used to make the clothes. Ladies short dresses: $95 - $140. Men's Hawaiian shirts: $89 Ladies purses: $140+ Men's Tshirts: $36. If you are at the Hilo store, be sure to check out the back sale / clearance section. In most instances, there are XXL-4XL sized shirts and dresses at a 25-50% discount. You might get lucky finding a smaller size. Super huge kudos go to Ipo (Internet sales manager & distribution) and Emery. Both have helped me over the years and have been super friendly. I've purchased Sig Zane design clothes over the last 15+ years, and will continue to do so! Maika'i Loa!

Yelp
Sig Zane, is the epitome of Hilo fashion designers and also a very pleasant man to be around. Come Merrie Monarch time (http://www.yelp.com/biz/merrie-monarch-festival-hilo-2 ), the city is all decked out in Sig's finest and his store is packed with wave upon wave of tourists, locals, and halau's alike. Simple, but using a variety of colorful dyes, Zane emphasizes the plain beauty of the world around him. The store is elegantly designed with a rich wooden feel. It's in stark contrast to the outside Hilo waterfront which emanates an more small old town feel, but they work so well together. His men's shirts start around $80, but he has many online sales and at the back of his store is a clearance rack. He even had a new gradient color style dress which was completely striking, but unfortunately my girlfriends size was sold out. His employees are extremely helpful and easy to talk to. It's small town Hilo after all. If you had to pick one Aloha clothing to wear, this should be it.

Yelp
I wanted to send a Big Island friend in to the Hilo location for a gift of a custom tailored shirt as I had been told they made back in 2012. After 1 phone call to the Hilo location with a not-very-friendly man who basically just told me to email the website, and 3 emails later.... I finally got an emailed reply that they no longer make custom shirts as "their production has evolved over the years." To me this was a disappointing evolution. I guess they're too busy designing corporate logos now. Sig Zane has also opened a store location in Chinatown on Oahu but when I went to check it out in person, it was closed with no hours posted. I have heard it is open one day a week but... what day?? That information was not visible on the door. So, Reyn Spooner got my gift shirt money. At this point I feel very "3 stars" about Sig Zane, but am adding a 4th star for the fact that if I run across a Sig Zane shirt in a thrift shop, I still grab it and wear it proudly as a Hilo brand, even if it barely fits me (LOL) and despite the fact that the design is rarely matched across the front of the shirt (one of my pet peeves). However, if their goal as a business is to get people to pay full price in a retail location, they haven't gotten me on board yet.

Yelp
Definitely cool designs in Hawaiian shirts and dresses, but the patterns that appealed to me in the women's styles weren't in the right sizes. Wasn't much of a choice in women's actually. Items were not cheap here, but I assume it's because this designer is a known commodity. I even saw him working in conjunction with Big Island Candies (one of his patterns was on one of their candy boxes). I wouldn't have minded putting up the money if I could have found something I liked. Unfortunately I was stymied several times by the selection. Too bad.

Yelp
3/9/19 Ordered 2 shirts and a dress online. This is my 2nd time ordering from Hilo. Awesome service, ordered on Saturday, received in my office before lunch on Tuesday! Just a shout out to those in Hilo, awesome job!

Yelp
Covid has upended life as we lived it. Changing our attitudes and ways. I seriously committed this year to "shop local." You should too. Went to SZD website, registered then perused the most beautiful selections. By the way by registering you are updated almost daily if not weekly of the selective beautiful items that become available in limited supply and sizes. So I shopped and bought. Easy to do. You are able to "curbside pick up" using Covid protocols they instruct you. Or you can have your items shipped to you. They have specials on that because of the holidays. I had a problem with one of my items on delivery. I emailed their website also called and left a short message. My call was returned in a timely manner by a very polite and helpful person. My issue was resolved right away, I was satisfied. Easy. Just a side note, I have cleaned out my closets many, many times over the years. But the items that are still held dear are my SZD items. They are still beautiful and wearable. I also shopped online with their other business Paliku Surf. Some of Paliku Surf items are on SZD website too. "Shop local everyone!"

Yelp
Amazing designs based on the leaves and other nature of Hawaii. Lots of bright colors as well as neutral shades. Men's shirts run to 3X. They are just starting to carry some larger sizes in women's attire. We happened to go in when they were having a sale on everything so that made buying some beautiful aloha shirts more doable - I think the regular price is $80. They are good quality for that price but still, ouch! They also have a website so if you are not lucky enough to find yourself in Hilo you still can check them out.
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Hands down the best Aloha Shirts I have ever purchased. The are on the pricier side but well worth the value and investment. Sig and Kuha'o Zane take pride in what they do and it shows. Every design tells a story and every product made for a reason. Thier work can be seen in the designs at the Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa at Keauhou Bay, along with many other community based companies and organizations.

Yelp
The shirts are amazing. The colors and patterns so vibrant and full of mo'olelo. And the staff...simply delightful!

Yelp
Really loved this store. And it is the only one in Hawaii or elsewhere, as I understand. You can go online but that would take away from the experience of visiting the store. The sales clerk had a great understanding of the plant species that are used in the designs as each is clearly well thought-out and each has a deep significance to the designer and to the people of this place. The fabrics are hand-printed and the styles are very Hawaii. Very Hilo! I really wanted an item with the koa leaves print but they were sold out in my size. :( Very sad. You could say that each piece is a unique work of art. These very limited edition items are well worth the prices, which do not seem at all excessive to me all things considered. Oh yes, of course I made a purchase and I know I bought something more than just a couple pieces of clothing.

Yelp
This Store is Gorgeous! Beautiful & Unique Designs! I love all the Bright Color's and Print's!

Yelp
I've never made it to the big Island, but it's already in my heart....or atleast I wear it that way. Thanks to Sig Zane. I was introduced to the style of Sig Zane by friends. If you're tired of the tired typical Hawaiian shirt, Sig Zane may be for you. The designs they offer are vibrant, unique, and Indigenous. Sig Zane is a Hawaiian Native-owned business, and many of the designs are Native-inspired. I've done my Sig Zane shopping online. Their website has several options for ya. Some of the shirts can be pricey, but they really are worth it. They sometimes have several pieces on sale as well. When you wear a Sig Zane garment, you are wearing art.
google avatar

Phill W.

Yelp
Sig Zane embodies everything I love about the big island and Hilo. If you're going bring one trophy item back from Hawaii, make it a Sig Zane shirt! The staff is full of aloha -- friendly & knowledgeable. When my girlfriend asked a clerk about his fresh-flower lei, he said it was made from tahitian gardenias and then gave it to her! They told us about everything from the printing process to the ancient medicinal uses for the plant used for the design. Their men's aloha-wear is perfectly tailored; the prints are simple, tasteful and beautiful. Colors are bright and cheery, but nothing is gaudy. Everything in the store is made in Hawaii, and if you're lucky you'll meet Mr. Zane himself.
google avatar

Ken A.

Yelp
Sig Zane's shirts are great - beautiful and striking designs. The staff in the store is friendly and helpful and does not pressure you. They are expensive -- if you are going to be in Honolulu, I suggest not buying at the Sig Zane store but going to Bailey's on Kapahulu Ave. - a huge vintage aloha shirt store, with a pretty good selection of Sig Zane stuff at half the cost of what you would pay new.
google avatar

Chad Y.

Yelp
Nothing says Hilo apparel than Sig Zane. The designs they offer are truly unique and offer a different aloha shirt that stands out and makes a statement. Is it more expensive, yes, but you get a high quality shirt with a truly unique print that makes it worth it. The store itself is somewhat off the beaten path, however it is Hilo..How far is anything really? The selection is the entire collection. So if it isn't available there, it isn't available period. Sig Zane offers a contemporary look to aloha shirts which are refreshing and attracts not only the younger crowds, but the older groups of businessmen. Sig Zane's looks are quintessentially Hawaii and more so Hilo. It is different, cool, and traditional all at the same time. If you ever want to spring for a nice aloha shirt. Check out Sig Zane. Oh, they also have a website you can order off of as well!
google avatar

Jaime F.

Yelp
Absolutely beautiful store! It's like art and clothing in one! My husband has a few item and loves all of them! Yes it is pricey but the amount of work and background that goes into each design is totally worth a piece of art that will last a very long time! Not to mention made in, designed in, printed in Hawaii! The man that gave a bad review probably came in with a bad attitude and gave the sales staff a bad time. Everyone that works in the store is amazingly friendly and helpful! We've never had anything but good service!

Yelp
If you are looking for an Aloha shirt that will get a lot of compliments, then Zig Zane is the place to get it from. They have a variety of unique dress shirts for both men and women. They are located in downtown Hilo off of Kamehameha Ave. near Cronies Restaurant. The shirts are made of the highest quality material, and you can tell when you try it on. There are so many beautiful colors and designs that are used in the shirts. To me that's what makes them stand out from other designers. When you see someone wearing a Sig Zane shirt you can tell that it's not just another Aloha shirt from a big store. I have a few of the shirts, and get lots of compliments whenever I wear them. The hard part is deciding what shirts to buy, when you go to the store. It's a better idea to just by at least two at a time, because you will go home and say I should have got that other print to. Many of the shirts are a one time limited print, so don't wait to buy the one you want. The prices are high for the shirts, but the quality is worth it. The store is small, but is set up very nice. The super friendly and helpful staff will make sure that you find what your looking for. Sig Zane Designs is the place to go for that one of a kind Aloha shirt!
google avatar

Kalani C.

Yelp
Love this guy. Local and nature inspired aloha wear. Not your run of the mill aloha shirt, but one with spirit and designation. Be prepared to lay down some cash, but well worth the investment. Malama Pono!

Yelp
Just back from the Big Island and on my first day I drove from Kohala to Hilo to see what was up at Sig's. This place is a real treat. Sig is a fascinating man and you'll be especially lucky if he happens to be around. Beautifully designed clothing made in Hawai'i. The materials are carefully and thoughtfully selected and hand silk screened using Sig's designs. The store is a treat to visit. On both recent visits there was a bowl of freshly cut gardenias making it smell like the paradise it is.

Roberta D.

Yelp
Sig Zane is my favorite designer and I have many items in my closet. Every time I am in Hilo I go into the store. On my last 2 visits to the store my experience shopping was noticeably different in that I was ignored and offered no help despite at least 2 sales people and an empty store. On all of my prior occasions I received lots of assistance, for example different styles, sized and colors were brought to my dressing room and I happily purchased items. The last 2 visits I helped myself, was offered no sales assistance and left empty handed. Please consider hiring some helpful staff or I am going to stop shopping Sig Zane in Hilo.
google avatar

Yelp
Sig Zane is one of my favorite stores for Aloha attire. The prints on the clothing is special and each print has its own story. It's exciting to ask a salesperson to tell you about the print and what may have inspired them to create the print. Yes, it's pricey, but for the quality of the clothing and fit, it's well worth it. The dresses and tops fit my body perfectly, even after I wash it! Unlike other brands you don't have to worry about shrinking or taking it to be dry cleaned to avoid shrinkage. People always get compliments when they wear Sig Zane.
google avatar

Robin S.

Yelp
You know you've settled into Big Island life when your go-to designer is Sig Zane. Love everything about their stuff. The sales staff is friendly and helpful. The store is beautiful...the DOOR!!
google avatar

Adrian K.

Yelp
Stroll into the beautiful Bayfront store and pickup a classic style button-down shirt. Next thing you know everyone is hollering, "That shirt fits like a dream, where did you get it?" From the designer featured in the in-flight magazine, dats where. Zig Zow! Super aloha staff. I would be stoked to see some 3 piece suits.
google avatar

Shane S.

Yelp
Wonderful Friendly Service with the personal touch...Definitely First Class quality product...Look and feels good...Wide array of designs and colors...do not be deterred by the price...if you want cheap and poor quality go somewhere else...
google avatar

Amber W.

Yelp
I went nuts once in this store and bought 3 dresses. I don't regret it one bit and rotate them for Aloha Fridays. His patterns are so stylish that you could actually wear them outside of Hawaii and not get funny looks.

Nacho L.

Yelp
This place is always nice to visit. Can't always buy a clothes every time but it's always fun to try things on. The staff is very helpful with anything you need. They are very very nice when returning a gift that's may be more then 90 days out. The designs are very nice and they have a rainbow of colors. If you want a good quality made aloha shirt this is one to always have in your closet.
google avatar

Ax C.

Yelp
Aloha wear is like rodeo gear - both look cool in their element, but once removed look pretty lame. If you are going to buy one aloha shirt, and find yourself on the Big Island then consider Sig Zane. You may get more long term usability from his simple designs on solid backgrounds. However, if you are one of us working stiffs I can think of a lot of better uses for $110. Of course, if you are a Hawaii State politician you already have 5 of these as wearing $600 worth of cloth somehow makes you more authentic.
google avatar

Yelp
I own several items of clothing from Sig Zane and I really, really want to love them, but I just can't. The brick & mortar store in downtown Hilo is a must visit every time I go to Hilo, but I just can't get excited about their women's clothes. 1) I wear a size medium, have an hourglass figure, and their clothes never seem to fit right - always too tight around the bust and hips and way too big around the waist. I've heard that Sig prides himself on creating clothing for Hawaiian women who may not be "supermodel thin." That's great, but it seems as if his clothing will only fit you if you are built straight up and down. I'm used to mainland designers like J. Crew designing for women that are basically built like little boys, but this is a Hawaiian designer who's supposed to be designing for Hawaiian women. C'mon! If you are at all curvy (meaning you have waist to bust and waist to hip ratios less than 1 and not aren't just thin or big all over), don't even think about it unless you're willing to go to a tailor. I'm extremely frustrated by this issue - can you tell? 2) There's something odd about the fabric. It's feels very thick and stiff, doesn't really "drape" well, and doesn't breathe very well in the humidity. The labels say that their clothing is 100% cotton (except for a few items that are done in linen), but it feels almost like the kind of material you would make a thick tablecloth out of. I don't know. It's really difficult to describe. This brand is favored by hula dancers and while the dresses look lovely while standing still I find them very difficult to dance in just because they don't move with my body. 3) The online selection is terrible, which bums me out since I'm currently finishing my PhD in Boston and don't get to Hilo very often anymore. The two stars are for amazing prints that are beautiful to both look at and think about and how amazing their aloha shirts look on a handsome Kanaka man!

Yelp
Stopped by this store on a trip to the Big Island after I saw some really cute stuff on their website for kids. Ends up that some of their kids products on the website are no longer available?!?!?! And the few kids items they did have were not available in all sizes. Looked at some of the women's clothes- nothing you could really where on the mainland unless its aloha day at work. If you're in the neighborhood, it wouldn't hurt to stop by, but don't make a trip just for this place.

Yelp
seems so much more high end than reyns but prices are about the same. the store was very nice - had lotsa selection. really the designs are unique, beautiful - the fabrics are soft and high quality.

Yelp
I bought my first sig zane in 2007 and I love it... I get so many compliments on it... it is the Vera Wang of Hawaiian print dresses... they are also hand made... they are not manufactured like most dresses.... you have to go into the shop... if you go online the styles are not as nice....oh and when you go it they give you a brownie with sig zane's logo on it.... the people are very helpful and friendly... it is also is right on the coast with an amazing view of the ocean....

Kristin M.

Yelp
I love this store. I work a few minutes away and I can't get enough of it. Although due to the price I only can afford one a year. But it's all worth. Beautiful designs if you can get them before they sell out to other people. It does run a little small for women but guys last I bought one for my husband it ran one size bigger. They last a long time. I have dresses from several years ago. It's too bad my daughter keeps out growing hers so fast, she can only wear them for a few months. Customer service is awesome! Everyone there is so friendly. By now they all know us by name so that's cool. Most of them are bilingual so it helps when the tourist come and speak another language. I still have a bag when he first designed the open leather trim bag. Still lasting, now if I could only get the rain to stop so I don't get it wet. LOL right stop raining in Hilo.

Yelp
I love Sig Zane's clothing and items, the perfect mixture of art, culture, class and style. He takes old Hawaii and art and creates beautiful clothing that stand out. You know a Sig piece when you see it. The men's linen shirts when they have them in are perfect for Hawaii weather. The dress pattern art does sometimes wear off where your purse rubs, but once it does you get to have guilt-free shopping to replace it, I mean c'mon now you NEED a new one :)

The designs, colors, and cut is, as most reviewers have written, unique, comprehensive, and generous, respectively. However, one improvement that would significantly improve the label is use of a blended fabric or non-wrinkle type material. I wear apperal by Sig on a nearly daily basis for work and HATE to iron/dry clean the wrinkles after washing and drying on the line.
