On the Grid : Signal Return

"The letterpress shop in the city that hosts workshops for those looking to learn the craft of setting lead type or wanting to make a set of charming thank you cards. Check the store's inventory for in-house and artist-made posters and cards and other print goods." - Eugene Carland

"Letterpress Workshop and Gallery in Eastern Market The Eastern Market neighborhood is expanding to become a haven for the arts as much as for those seeking fresh, locally sourced food. Signal Return is a product of that expansion. Open every Saturday (the main market day) as well as Thursdays and Fridays, it is a shop, gallery, and practical workspace that welcomes local letterpress artists. It's an ideal place to browse if you're still looking for that Detroit souvenir that can't be bought anywhere else in the United States. While letterpress is popular, these designs are not like any you've seen. Many are truly one-of-a-kind and they range from posters and greeting cards to t-shirts and bags."

Google
Stumbled across Signal Return this morning and I'm so glad I did! Friendly staff. Prices in their store range from $5 - $150, so there's something for everybody. Beautiful brick and mortar shop, too.

Such a hidden gem- The letter press machines over here are so vintage, the studio space almost doubles as a museum exhibit. The folks working here are also super passionate and love what they do. Overall, a really cool space that churns out beautiful prints.

Happy to support a local nonprofit that is intentional and thoughtful about their mission. Highly recommend stopping in their studio if you’re near the Market—they are simply excellent at their craft!

BEAUTIFUL PRINT SHOP and PRINTS! They offer classes in addition to their merch: handmade cards, art, tea towels, zines, you name it! Very talented artist's artwork for sale.

Cool prints and very friendly staff. You can also see the studio area and watch folks printing if they're in working. Classes offered if you want to get into printmaking yourself.

My girlfriend loved her Christmas present. I visit Signal Return occasionally when I'm in Eastern Market. They have amazing handmade prints made in house from local artists that are reasonably priced. I've also purchased birthday cards from here, and attended an event where I was able to print my own Chrisrmas cards. Make sure you wander around and check the whole place out. The people are super friendly and welcoming. You can see all the hand operated presses and they are very well maintained and beautiful works of in their own.

Yelp
' had an amazing time doing the Workshop at DIA on Saturday! Great set up for the crowd you generated. Everyone walked away with a product. FUN! Thanks! Judith

Yelp
So grateful for this beautiful studio/business! The staff has always been so helpful, enthusiastic about this amazing process of printmaking, and encouraging for furthering my passion in the craft! If you're looking for a new skill/hobby that allows you to get lost in your own creative mind, printmaking is it, and signal return can help you get on your feet :) They also have a beautiful collection of prints, cards and more that make for a unique timeless gift

Yelp
Cooooooooool! This place rules. Awesome letter press studio in Eastern Market. Full of delightful pressings of designs of a Detroit, Michigan, and general whimsical nature. Eastern Market Flower Day, Nothing Stops Detroit, and Tigers are heavily featured as are food centric prints. My favorite is a print of hens with a caption of, "Thanks for the eggs, ladies!" Super cute. Prints are a reasonable price ($20-40) given that letterpress equipment is SO expensive. Speaking of the equipment, they've got some bodacious stuff in there. If you're a printmaking nerd like me you will totally get all hot and bothered. Not really an expert? No worries. They also offer workshops and events (lectures and such) that will help you get learned in no time! But if you don't want to do the work they also offer custom orders and such to get you exactly what you want or need.

Yelp
What a fun shop in the Eastern Market neighborhood! From the minute you walk in the door you can't help but love the maker feel of letterpresses and projects in motion. Although our visit was only ten to 15 minutes, I quickly found a wedding card and not "lunch box notes" set that I had to leave with. In addition to dozens of cards made locally, the shop boasts one-of-a-kind prints for framing as well as proud Detroit/Michigan items. If you find yourself at Eastern Market, know that you are less than a block from Signal Return. Enjoy the beautiful space!

Yelp
I love Eastern market and supporting small business in Detroit. I really like the selection at Signal-Return. I have several prints in my home. I was particularly happy to get this year's Mo-Pop print. Yay, me. It will match one of my rooms perfectly. I'm also a fan of their cards. I try to stop at least once a quarter so I don't miss anything new.

Yelp
Signal Return is a fairly new addition to the Eastern Market district, and it functions not only as a cool space but also as: (I.) Letterpress Facility - Looking to get give your wedding invites that extra special touch? Look no further. Signal Return has the capabilities to print your letterpress order. They also host letterpress & bookbinding (aka making a book from scratch from the cover, sewing, making signatures, etc) workshops. (II.) Store - Selling local zines, poster prints, books, and newsletters. (III.) Art Gallery - Featuring a variety of artwork from screenprinsted posters, to installations, and sculptures - pretty cool! (IV.) Public Space - Hosting everything from the monthly DrinksxDesign event, to movie screenings, and even pop-up dinners. Overall, Signal Return is a fantastic addition to Detroit!

Yelp
Fun spot to walk in to. My friend wanted to get a customized print and so he brought me here. I was caught by many prints that were hung up. Some of them I wanted but i just happened to browse. Really neat store with all the print making machinery on the backside. There is a print making event called Power of the Press April 5-9th! So make sure to check that out! Prices range from $15, $20 and more.

Yelp
Terrible customer service given to my mother who missed a class for which she had registered, despite the cost. She doesn't have money to waste, at all, and tried to get the fee applied to a future class or workshop, and after days of asking, they only offered her a 10% discount on a future workshop. I understand that they have to cover costs, but they could've done better, and it didn't need to take days of negotiations for them to just basically tell her to kiss off.

Yelp
Cannot wait to come back to this place next time I'm in town! I wish I could buy more artwork but I'm running out of wall space. This place is so beautifully designed & you can sign up to take classes! What's better than that?!

Yelp
Signal Return is the type of business that really sets Detroit apart from the rest. I couldn't be happier that such a unique business has cropped up in the Eastern Market area. The space itself is part shop, part workshop. On one side, the customer can see prints made in the shop hanging up and can purchase them. There were all kinds of cool gift possibilities from cards to prints from various artists. They do special orders, too as mentioned by Maria B. The most exciting part for me, are the workshops that they offer. There's more info here: http://www.signalreturnpress.org/Workshops the offerings are ever-changing and some require more of a time commitment than others. I'll be trying one out soon, stay tuned for a review update! Welcome to the neighborhood, Signal Return.

Yelp
My favorite art studio in the Eastern Market! The studio is split in half. The first half is where you arrive when you walk in from the front door. Here, you can purchase prints made in the studio by local artists in addition to some select prints made elsewhere. They have everything from original cards (for birthdays, etc), to posters, to beautiful images worth framing. Think the first half is pretty cool? Well the second half is better. This is where the magic happens. There are rows of presses with a variety of letters, carved wooden shapes, etc that can be incorporated into a print. There is usually a resident artist at Signal-Return and they (in addition to other staff) are usually working in this area as customers browse in the other half. The best part is that there are frequent hands-on classes offered by the resident artist! Just as a sample, during July 2014 Signal-Press is teaching workshops on building geometric patterns, working with digital illustrators like photoshop, and pressing with metal type. Prices for classes range from $50-200 and may last a few hours to a few days. So, next time you are thinking about going to CVS to buy a thank you card, come here instead. Also come for the classes, the art, and whenever you are in the Eastern Market!

Yelp
I love Signal-Return, because I always feel creatively inspired when I walk through the door. Then I realize I suck at being an artist. There are always a plethora of cards, posters, tea towels, and such for sale, each with a different edge, each full of art. They also hold regular classes and sessions here for letter pressing and the space is really just fantastic. Go and buy yourself something pretty. Don't miss it while you are roaming around Eastern Market.

Yelp
Came across this place from a local Detroit blog and feel in love with a print I wanted to buy. So one Saturday morning after spending more than I intended to perusing Eastern Market (damn you Romanian sausage!), I strolled in. They are really setup to teach people how to use the Letterpress that they run, which is an amazing idea, but for me I just wan to buy some local cool stuff. They have a limited rotating selection of prints ranging from cards and invites to posters of varying sizes. I attended an one year anniversary of bar held at Hazel Park Racetrack and was able to buy a poster that Signal-Return created for the event. It was the perfect memento. To Recap: The Good: Great local artists making unique pieces of art. Custom work can be done, but I just like to buy the prints. Most of them reflect local Detroit art from Belle Isle Disc Golf, to retro looking Tigers-era Kirk Gibson prints with clever sayings. The Bad: I have been unsuccessfully trying to get an artist to reprint an Eastern Market print that I love with no luck for over 6 months. The prints rotate slowly, so there isn't a need to visit weekly, although you can, the staff is very friendly. The Band This Establishment Most Resembles: Deftones. Hard to define, easy to enjoy.

Yelp
Perfect store if you're looking for awesome prints! From large frame-able prints to birthday cards. They have some notebooks and postcards as well. Love the fact that they have a plethora of classes for the community. Would go if I was local

Yelp
What a gem! My boyfriend and I found this awesome print shop & workshop on our visit to Detroit. It is full of lots of local and affordable art, they offer classes too! I ended up purchasing a large print and having it shipped to me. It was damaged in the mail, but the shop was awesome and got a replacement sent out to me ASAP. Will definitely revisit when we are back in the Motor City.

Yelp
You have to check out Signal Return. It's a great place to pick up amazing posters and prints. I got two beautiful prints for under $25 that I plan on framing. I was looking for stuff at the MoMa design store but this work is way more original, priced reasonably and beautiful. The staff is really friendly and the prints are stunning. Stuff you'd expect to see in Andy Warhol's studio. Seriously missing out if you haven't been.
