This 7-mile Hike in Oregon Takes You to 10 Waterfalls

"An emerald temperate rainforest about 90 minutes from Portland, this park is defined by centuries-old Douglas firs draped in moss, gargantuan ferns, and a series of dramatic cascades. Its primary draw is a collection of ten distinct waterfalls clustered along miles of well-maintained trails, with visitor amenities at the South Falls District trailhead including a café, nature store and restrooms. The woods feel quintessentially Pacific Northwest—lush, misty and enchanting—and offer options for all abilities, from short accessible viewpoints to longer, immersive hikes." - Margot Bigg Margot Bigg Margot Bigg is a travel writer and editor who has spent most of her adult life traveling and living overseas. The park features the ability to walk behind four waterfalls, a 7.2-mile Trail of Ten Falls, and a campground equipped for visitors. Guests can also enjoy swimming at Upper North Falls via the Rim Trail and strolling under a canopy of old-growth Douglas firs."

Silver Falls is a delightful day trip from Salem, Lebanon, and Portland. There are multiple falls to see. There are hiking trails around the canyon and more to the east allowing access to horses and mountain bikes. The park is large enough that is does not seem crowded. The park is gorgeous and being able to walk behind falls is magnificent. We saw dozens of crawdads in the stream by the Upper North Falls. Several areas are steep, but the experience is worth it.

The Trail of Ten Falls is without a doubt one of the highlights of Silver Falls State Park and a must-do hike for anyone visiting. The trail offers a series of stunning waterfalls, each with its own charm, and provides an immersive experience of Oregon’s natural beauty. Trail Options: • Starting from the South Falls Day Use area, you can do a shorter loop beginning at Upper South Falls and finishing via the Rim Trail. This route takes around 2 hours 15 minutes and is a very enjoyable hike with plenty to see. • If you’d like to experience all 10 waterfalls, including the North Falls, plan for at least 3.5 hours or more depending on your pace and time spent at each viewpoint. Alternatively, if you’re short on time, you can also drive closer to North Falls for a shorter walk to enjoy it. Highlights: The most spectacular sections are definitely Upper South Falls and Lower South Falls. These waterfalls are both incredibly picturesque, with trails that even allow you to walk behind them — a unique and memorable experience. If your schedule is tight, I’d recommend prioritizing Upper South Falls, as it’s the most impressive of them all. Trail Experience: The hike itself is easy to moderate and very well maintained. It’s suitable for families and even young children, with plenty of resting spots along the way. The scenery is lush, green, and peaceful, making it just as enjoyable as the waterfalls themselves. Overall: This trail combines accessibility with breathtaking views, making it one of the best hikes in the state. Whether you do the shorter loop or the full 10 falls, you won’t be disappointed. A highly recommended outdoor experience for all ages!

I parked at the south falls day use area. This is a big parking lot with picnic tables around and a bathroom building. I was on a time crunch so didn’t have all day to hike the full 8ish mile loop. I saw 3 waterfalls which were fantastic. I suggest if you don’t have all day to hike to just park here then park at the other waterfall parking lots. It saves you hours of hiking total. I saw the 3 waterfalls in around 2 hours and hiked only about 3 miles total. Definitely visit here if you’re in the area. The hikes and cave areas near some of the falls are gorgeous. Also don’t forget to pay to park. Have fun !

It's a magical place. We saw 6 out of 10 waterfalls. It's definitely a workout. We rented a cabin and we love it. I definitely recommend it. Very nice and very clean and beautiful views.

Wow! What an amazing place! The trails are as beautiful as the falls. This place rivals Hawaii in sheer beauty. My knee was sore from hiking previous days so my wife and I didn't do the full loop trail. We went to North Falls Upper Falls, then North Falls. Both are very short treks, like a quarter mile each and both are spectacular. We then drove to the main parking lot and hiked to South Falls because it was also a short, easy hike. The trail for this one goes behind the waterfall. We'll come back another time and do the Trail of Ten Falls loop.

Beautiful, well maintained trails. Too many people with dogs where they shouldn't be but saw no animal waste anywhere, it was grand. We did the full 9 mile loop today and absolutely loved it. Will probably do it again on a weekday so it's not so busy next time, but absolutely worth the visit!

Hiked the trail of ten falls today. Showed up at 0800 in early August and we were one of ten cars in the lot at the South Falls Day Use Area. It's a beautiful part of the park with well maintained trails. It's an easy to moderate hike to do the 5.8mi loop starting at the parking lot. I would recommend going counterclockwise if you're okay with going up stairs instead of down.

Beautiful place, outstanding waterfall views. To see all 5 waterfalls, it is an 8-mile hike. Plan to bring comfy shoes, drinks and it can get hot hiking in the sunniest areas. For a quick visit, one can hike the North end of the trail to reach the biggest waterfall, which can be viewed from a big cave/cavern behind the falls. Restrooms are located in parking lots. Plenty of parking.
