This 7-mile Hike in Oregon Takes You to 10 Waterfalls

"An emerald temperate rainforest about 90 minutes from Portland, this park is defined by centuries-old Douglas firs draped in moss, gargantuan ferns, and a series of dramatic cascades. Its primary draw is a collection of ten distinct waterfalls clustered along miles of well-maintained trails, with visitor amenities at the South Falls District trailhead including a café, nature store and restrooms. The woods feel quintessentially Pacific Northwest—lush, misty and enchanting—and offer options for all abilities, from short accessible viewpoints to longer, immersive hikes." - Margot Bigg Margot Bigg Margot Bigg is a travel writer and editor who has spent most of her adult life traveling and living overseas. The Best RV Campgrounds in the U.S. for Your Next Trip

"About an hour outside of Portland in the Cascade Mountains, Silver Falls State Park is considered the crown jewel of the Oregon State Parks system. The park features the ability to walk behind four waterfalls, a 7.2-mile Trail of Ten Falls, and a campground equipped for visitors. Guests can also enjoy swimming at Upper North Falls via the Rim Trail and strolling under a canopy of old-growth Douglas firs."

Beautiful area. Trails are very well maintained. Can be busy around mid day, so you may want to hit it early if you want to avoid the crowd. Have good shoes and be ready for a workout. Your legs and butt will feel it in the morning.

Beautiful, well maintained trails. Too many people with dogs where they shouldn't be but saw no animal waste anywhere, it was grand. We did the full 9 mile loop today and absolutely loved it. Will probably do it again on a weekday so it's not so busy next time, but absolutely worth the visit!

Hiked the trail of ten falls today. Showed up at 0800 in early August and we were one of ten cars in the lot at the South Falls Day Use Area. It's a beautiful part of the park with well maintained trails. It's an easy to moderate hike to do the 5.8mi loop starting at the parking lot. I would recommend going counterclockwise if you're okay with going up stairs instead of down.

Beautiful place, outstanding waterfall views. To see all 5 waterfalls, it is an 8-mile hike. Plan to bring comfy shoes, drinks and it can get hot hiking in the sunniest areas. For a quick visit, one can hike the North end of the trail to reach the biggest waterfall, which can be viewed from a big cave/cavern behind the falls. Restrooms are located in parking lots. Plenty of parking.

Silver Falls State Park is terrific in so many ways. Today's review is the South Falls hike. This is a classic and must do though be sure you can do it. This particular route starts at the South Falls Lodge and follows that trail to where it connects into the rim trail which is around a 6 mi loop. You will pass underneath many waterfalls and I think you see seven or eight in total. On this hike people underestimate the punchy climbs and oftentimes bring small children or older adults that lack the conditioning to do this hike. I only mention this so you do not underestimate the hike. It's not terribly hard by any means for a person in reasonable shape. The trails are wide and well taken care of. The parking lot at South Falls does require a day pass and can get very packed. There is a bathroom available at the parking lot. The hike itself has so many beautiful views and is absolutely worth the trip.

One of the most beautiful if not the most beautiful state parks out there. You get what you expect! A bunch of waterfalls. They come to you in different sizes and viewing forms. Some you can walk behind, some you can walk down to get better views, but all are beautiful. The whole loop was 8 miles. One side is more congested with the waterfalls, the other side you pretty much just walk along the flat trail to get around to the sides. You can start on the north end or south end. North side has a smaller parking lot. I did north end counterclock wise and I had the easier flat walk last, the waterfalls first, less crowd going my way and you get one great last waterfall at the store/visitor center. The visitor center and south area has more parking. The store is clean and has some nice souvenirs. There are park staff there to help you arrange and plan out your hike. Most of the walk is shaded.

Absolutely amazing! Wonderful hiking trails with beautiful views. So many waterfalls here. We hiked all afternoon. We were here midweek & plenty of parking available. Clean bathrooms. Family friendly.

Sprawling Oregon State Park that not only features some extremely scenic waterfalls but also has a rich history of CCC involvement. South Falls is the most famous waterfall here, but one can hike the Trail of Ten Falls along Silver Creek through some impressive woodlands and see a lot more. I recommend that instead of just looking at South Falls, one follows the Canyon trail to at least see the lower South Falls and stop by separately at the North Falls. Please note that the park can be extremely busy during the summer. Also, note that while some trails are paved, many are not and can be muddy or slippery.
