"Opened in 1977 on the Upper West Side, the Silver Palate became an archetype of the gourmet food shop; as I read in Sheila Lukins’s New York Times obituary (she was a co-founder), these shops arose to accommodate city‑dwelling professional women (and some hapless bachelors) who wanted good food but lacked the time to produce it. At the Silver Palate you could buy curried squash soup or lemon chicken to reheat and plate as you wished, and its cookbook, The Silver Palate Cookbook (published in 1982 and since selling millions of copies), helped popularize a prepared‑food style and ingredient standards that changed home cooking." - Hannah Goldfield

My friend treated me to brunch this morning at Silver Palate and what a treat it was! The most delicious meal I've had in a long time. Friendly service and greeting when we arrived. There was a lovely vibe and despite being very busy we were well looked after and not rushed. We'll be back.

A really spot on restaurant! The hash browns are honestly something else and something you must get. I was surprised with the healthy portion you get A nice chill vibe, a really enjoyable way to start the day. The discount you get for the deli on your way out is a lovely touch, also.

Really good cannoli! I had pistachio, it was great. There sandwiches are good too and the hot chocolate was high quality. However, the food and drinks are pretty price. But, the place is decorated really well and the servers are usually really nice. So I still recommend, you get quality.

Found this lovely restaurant by accident today whilst working in the area. Comfortable, spacious environment with a great atmosphere. The staff were very welcoming and attentive, and the food was amazing, fresh, quality produced cooked to perfection. Will definitely return. (PS. Try the poached eggs!!)

I don't know Harpenden very well and came here for a brunch with some girlfriends. One of them has a few food allergies and the staff tried hard to accommodate her but I have to say they didn't know what was even in some of the food and had to make several trips to and from the kitchen to ask and then we were not overly confident. My food was very nice bit some of it was cold.

Shame I have to give it two stars as I used to love this place but since their refurbishment and the clearout from what was once a really good italian deli it's now just a rather expensive cafe. Yes they still do excellent value made to order sandwiches (£2.50 - £3.00) and have a great selection of meats, cheeses and antipasti. But gone are the centre isles of goodies that had just about everything you would want from a traditional italian deli. The place looks like it's missing something Plus they get two stars because my last sandwich from there was the special of the day: salted beef on rye. Unfortunately thats exactly what it was - no mustard or pickles - no idea.

Hi, I work in Harpenden and go to the Silver Palate a great deal. They have a very good selection of cheese, both french and english, cakes from Maison Blanc and good wine selection. Their working lunch platters are a must, always a treat. I agree with getup early and miss the good selection of upmarket groceries, but some are coming back for Xmas, pannetone yum! I imagine they had to enlarge the sitting area due to immediate competition. Staff are nice enough even though the owner can be grumpy at times. Cheer up Georgina We love your place. Overall a very good Deli. PS: they are greek
