This 80-mile Horseback Ride Across Idaho Is the Ultimate Horse Girls' Trip

"A family-owned dude ranch near Dubois that offers immersive three-day, 80-mile horse drives across open plains, sagebrush and wildflower-lined terrain, often with a herd of nearly 50 horses thundering past distant peaks. Founded 30 years ago on a parcel of family land, the operation is now run by the founders’ son and daughter-in-law with help from guides (notably a Wyoming-born Stetson), rotating family members who cook and camp with guests, and seasoned ranch hands. The drives function as both ranch tourism and hands-on horse training: mounted vacationers help move and school dozens of unridden horses to improve their surefootedness while learning to handle spirited mounts at a brisk pace—so riding skill, stamina and tolerance for chafed thighs are essential. Days include fordings and creek baths, simple camp meals (think pulled-pork sandwiches and saddlebag snacks), encounters with regional wildlife (moose, antelope, mule deer, badgers and the occasional coyote or cougar), and rustic nights in sturdy tents; the experience aims to be authentic and rugged rather than high-maintenance." - Carrie Dennis Carrie Dennis Carrie Dennis is a New York City-based writer and editor with more than a decade of content strategy experience. Silver Spur Ranch is the real deal! It was an experience of a LIFETIME! June 2025 was our first time on this horse drive vacation and it didn’t disappoint. Clearly, as we are already booked for 2026. The amenities are great and the food is absolutely delicious. The fellowship with the owners, staff and fellow riders was so much fun. The staff cater to your every need. It’s a real family ranch experience and I highly recommend this vacation for any experienced rider who is game for adventure, beautiful scenery, and a good time!

There is no possibility of making this experience any more amazing! The horses are stunning, the people are kind, funny, and take great care of us! Thought is put into pairing us with the best riding horse for a good fit. The food is so good- they go out of their way to provide delicious and comforting meals and snacks. The lodgings are well though out and charming (both the lovely cabins at the ranch and the camping accommodations along the drive). I thought of this as a once in a lifetime experience, and now I'm scheming about when I can go back. You'll be exhausted and so happy! You get to know the other people on the drive in a way I have never experienced on a vacation. It's a dream come true and I'm grateful to the families at Silver Spur for sharing it with us!

I went to Silver Spur to join my wife on her dream trip. She’s the horsey one, not me. What I found out there was a dream trip for me as well. From the rugged terrain, the saddle ponies, feeling like a functional part of the drive and getting a glimpse the families that work together to make it all happen. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a hard week but so worth the saddle sores. We’ll be back.

DO IT!!!!!!! I cannot recommend this trip enough, it was incredible! The trip was even better than everything I saw on their social medias. We did a little father daughter trip to the ranch in June 2025 and we will definitely be back! The horse drive was so much fun since it is for advanced riders; galloping for miles, moving horses, and what an amazing way to see Idaho. All of the family at the ranch were incredibly kind, helpful and overall amazing people! I have nothing but good things to say about Silver Spur and cannot wait to do it again!

It was literally the trip of a lifetime! Beautiful land, skies, fresh air, incredible starry nights, and precious wildlife. Gorgeous horses, mommas, and their foals. Unbelievably kind hosts, fantastic coffee (you gotta have great coffee! ), and the most delicious food make you never want to go home. After a great deal of unbearable life loss, this was a much-needed escape that brought about a remarkable amount of healing, for which I will always be grateful. It was incredible, and I will return someday. If you have been thinking about booking this trip, don't hesitate. You won't regret it! And if you fear a sore butt, padded bike shorts under your jeans help immensely :-)

Excellent adventure! Trip of a lifetime. If you like riding fast and long on a horse this is an incredible adventure. There's nothing like it. But you must be able to ride and be in good physical condition to ride several days in a row all day in all elements. This is not an easy trail ride. Great family and close knit team running this operation. Friendly and fun! Make sure you have your gear, gloves, boots, sunscreen, long sleeve shirts, hat and Advil packed.
