Have visited the Silver Star in the past with family and had delicious experiences. Am unsure if the kitchen staff has changed or no longer takes pride in their work, but recently had an experience so terrible that we will not return. Ordered two cold sandwiches to go and waited 45 minutes for the order to be completed. Drove all the way home to discover that the food was definitely not up to standard for this touted establishment. Of the several errors, two of the most notable were probably that the gluten free bread was presented totally untoasted, underbaked, and soggy (I'm sure it is not made in-house, but to put out food so poorly plated was very unappetizing, to say the least). Both sandwiches were advertised to come with a huckleberry compote (and as a native Montanan, anything huckleberry is worthy of celebrating and savoring!) Unfortunately, the huckleberry sauce was so withheld that we believed it to be forgotten until seeing a few pea-sized flecks of light purple stain on the top bread slices. I know huckleberries are expensive, but so are the Silver Star prices- which should more than cover rendering a dish as advertised ($32 for a pair of deli sandwiches). We drove back to the restaurant a second time to return the sandwiches and were offered the opportunity to wait almost as long for a re-do of the original order. Drove home again and began to eat the sandwiches only to discover yet-RAW bacon on both sandwiches. At this point we, for a third time, returned the food to the Silver Star. The manager agreed that the bacon was raw and even took it back as a training issue to talk over with the kitchen staff.
Having spoken with the manager multiple times to try to place this relatively basic order, and having spent over an hour and a half on this fiasco, we had no more desire for more food attempts. The manager refunded our order, though notably not our initial tip, and gave us two *complimentary* creme brulee desserts in styrofoam (without utensils or napkins). She assured us the "chef" had not put undercooked bacon (hello Trichinosis?), on as retaliation. But that would mean that the alternative was that so little care was put into a re-do, even underdone food, possibly carrying foodborne illness, was deemed acceptable to plate and represent the Silver Star reputation. I say, eat here at your own risk or find a restaurant with staff who are given the resources and environment to excel and, more importantly, enjoy their job!
Lastly, after this escapade, the "chef" should indeed be fired.
