Went to Simonsig for a special birthday bubbles tasting on Sunday and it was totally disappointing. For a winery credited with pioneering South Africa’s Cap Classique, we expected something special (on par at least with the multitude of Cape wineries we've been to over the years). The tasting room is dated, bare and dull compared to other wineries, who all pride themselves on spectacular tasting rooms. It felt like an old school hall. Service was so inattentive: we had to ask for water an hour in, and by the end of the second hour of waiting, we still didn’t know if there was another tasting round coming, if the tasting was over, nor did we know exactly what was happening or where our server had disappeared to. We eventually had to go find our waitress at the cashier area, where she then told us we still had one more varietal to taste and asked if we were staying? Would've been nice if we'd been told that an hour earlier and served the last tasting as even lunch time had now come and gone. After two hours, we paid without finishing the tasting and could't wait to leave. We were bored, hungry and frustrated. Especially because it was meant to make a special occasion, something memorable, for the right reasons. Which it sadly wasn't.
We all agreed, we definitely won't be back
