5 Best Day Trips from Hong Kong

"A tiny waterfront town in the northeast corner of Hong Kong, Sai Kung is famous for its strip of seafood restaurants—many of which provide no-frills open-air seating, modest prices, and big tanks of pick-your-own seafood. Sing Kee Seafood Restaurant is the top choice, serving Michelin-starred cuisine in a contemporary, three-story space. Seafood is prepared any way you like, from grilled to steamed or deep-fried. Standouts include: garlic scallops with vermicelli noodles, crispy chicken, fried salt-and-pepper abalone. If you have a big group, wok-fried noodles and the daily vegetables round out the sharing plates." - Kate Springer

Average place to try out seafood. We try out the set for 2 persons. We came to know this shop from a TVB show. Seafood is fresh. There are many seafood shops further up.

Quality seafood restaurant located far away from the bustling seafood street thus gives off a more relaxing vibe Food is decent, especially the deep fried abalone Good and attentive service; toilet is surprisingly clean compared to other seafood restaurants of similar nature Large outdoor area which makes it possible to bring along your furry children to dinner

There are a couple of other seafood restaurants in Sai Kung but I chose this one because it got Michelin 1 star before and more cozy environment for a birthday celebration. My second time here after 7 years! I really craved for giant mantis shrimps for celebration so on top of the set menu for 2 ($1098), we added two more giant mantis shrimps and two razor clams. The entree of the set dinner menu for two starts with this plate cucumber in garlic and soy sauce. Very crunchy and appetising. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Then this signature fried tofu. Simple but very delicious! Must-eat. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Instead of garlic, the scallops are made with 紅酒糟. Tastes good and special and not too salty. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Then it’s our additional order of mantis shrimps! It’s of the length of my arm and they are very meaty! I asked the kitchen to cook with salty goose egg yolk and it comes out extremely yummy! Not as salty as 避風塘. It’s really fulfilling to have the giant mantis shrimps. These two cost $700 in total plus an addition of $208 for cooking them. These are the two additional razor clam ($160) in black soy beans and pepper. Okay la. Springy but just typical. $118 for the cooking. We are already quite full when it gets to the lobster with noodles in cheese. So we packed the lobster and boodles home but it still tasted extremely good when we ate it the next day. Pork rib in muster salad dress. Meaty, soft, yummy but only a small portion. Well, i don’t really like these two jelly to be frank… Though it’s generally good, this restaurant is really far more pricey, at least a double, than other seafood restaurant.

+ very good food. fresh seafood. worth the visit + good portion of food with the set meal. + relatively good dining environment, with privacy in the upstairs tables - rapid service with little caring. it's like a production line. we expected better service with its Michelin one star rating. when the waiter prepares dining ware, the sound was super loud, just beside us. I wish it could be dealt with more gently. when he presented us the menu, I wish he could go a bit slower, so we understand fully what is going on and how to order which meal, because there are two sets of systems, a la carte and set meal. - overpriced overall, worth a visit and would be a good place for a slightly upscale dining.

Our group was there after a hike, and we had the set lunch for 12 pax. The restaurant wasn't particularly busy on a weekday, the seafood was delicious and very fresh, and portion quite large, more than enough to feed 12 hungry hikers. It's away from the touristy main stretch on the waterfront. Highly recommended.

Came here for dinner after a long hike. There were four of us and we were exhausted, so we decided to just get a four-person set meal. Service was good, and we sat outside and had a nice view of the sea. The abalone and the lobster noodles were fantastic, but we thought the dessert could’ve been slightly better.

It is a very local seafood experience,, it is good! The shrimp is so bouncy and fresh. The scallops is so tasty with garlic flavor. The steamed fish is cooked perfectly , pairing with soy sauce and green, simple and delicious! The fried rice is so good! Every bite I can get shrimp, cha siu and the rice is not oily at all, yummy! The pork is so soft and rich in taste, with aid of Chinese style sauce, I can finish it with rice. The deep fried squid is so cool! It is so crispy and the squid remains soft and tender, what a magic! The cucumber salad is simple, but their sauce is good, I love it. Overall it is a good experience! Thanks

Food was OK but definitely not worth the price! HK$450 for a plate of seafood fried rice and 2 garlic prawns. Additional HK$100 charged for "cooking"! Surely that's what a restaurant does and they shouldn't charge extra for it? The prawns were well cooked but not worth HK$240. The fried rice was OK, a bit too oily. Maybe they saw a tourist and thought they would add a "tax". Not sure if this is standard practice in Sai Kung but I'm not impressed. Would advise people to stay away!

Yelp
Fresh, fresh seafood well prepared in Sai Kung. Perfect for a lunch after hiking in the geoparks in the area. Only two of us for lunch so we were limited to prawns the size of lobsters(!) and shrimp and garlic. They will prepare seafood the way you want it and you can select your own seafood from the super clean tanks outside. This is not the seafood tanks in Canada that are kind of sad and overcrowded and the fish are looking really old. We also received a complimentary dessert of assorted jellies. A great meal by the sea.

Yelp
In Apr 2016, my best friend and I and her boyfriend had came to HK for a visit after a week in Korea. My mom had been planning with her old friend of 30+ to prob 40+ years to take us to Sai Kung for a seafood dinner. Since its been 10 years i've been to HK, i had forgotten how crappy of a drive it was to get to Sai Kung. I knew it was fairly inaccessible unless by private vehicle or small bus. One major thing i had forgotten was how much seafood cost in HK (more about this later) When we had arrived, the restaurant and the area had a small parking lot which was full by the time we got there. We had reservations and the restaurant took care of getting the cars parked. When we had arrived, i had not recognized the area as it was a little bit away from the actual known area of Sai Kung, with the arch way, market, etc. When we were waiting for my friends, we had looked at the menu (or lack of) and noticed this restaurant was a ONE MICHELIN STAR RESTAURANT AND IT WAS RECENTLY AWARDED IT either last year or this year ! holy crap $_$ ! When my friends arrived, we were taken around the side of the restaurant to their many tanks of fresh live seafood for us to pick. I LOVE how you get to go pick your own seafood but not being the person to pay and essentially host and what not, even when they asked what i wanted, i kinda pushed them off and let them do the ordering xD What we ended up getting was their popular fried salt & pepper tofu, popular fried scallop fritters, geoduck sashimi, soy sauce large prawns, award winning fried fresh abalone, black bean razor clams, mantis prawn (not sure style, maybe similar to bei fung tong? as it had salt pepper fried garlic chili). First thing first. EVERYTHING IS FRESH. as noted before. FRESH AND LIVE ! Naturally sweet and tender Salt & pepper tofu was the best ive ever had. Fried logs of tofu but without a thick batter and lightly seasoned with salt and pepper. As noted by the waiter, fried scallop fritters (limited amount per day apparently), were decent. Fresh and nicely fried. Crispy outside with much chopped scallops inside. Not overcooked so scallop was nice and tender, and not chewy. Geoduck Sashimi ! GEODUCK ! for those who dont know what a geoduck is, its essentially a large clam with a long long siphon that can be up to a few feet when relaxed. (google at your own risk - dont do it at work LOL) Super fresh ! Sweet slices of flesh ! Has a nice crisp texture as what fresh raw geoduck has. In the states, they usually would take the body (in the shell) and make a congee or soup, and sashimi the siphon. Soy sauce large prawns - super delicious. fresh large prawns. not overly salty from too much soy sauce. perfectly cooked. meat was nice and tender. Amazing for something so simple. But its always the simple things that are hard to master and do well right? :P Mantis Prawns - lightly fried with salt pepper and GARLIC . love garlic. mantis prawns are something fairly rare to see in the states. Yeah you can get them but so expensive ! ive been waiting years to have this again! oh man it was yummy ! if you think a large shrimp is big, you've never seen a mantis prawn. as the name states, it does have mantis like claws but unlike a shrimp that is short to curl into a ball, this is MUCH longer in size Fried fresh abalone - according to the waiter, this is the item that got them their one Michelin star ! As this is fresh abalone, not much prep is needed in comparison to dried abalone (which is MUCH MUCH more expensive and painful to prep - rehydrating, cleaning, braising, making a stock to make a sauce, etc). When i first heard fried abalone, i was like WAH SO WASTED ! but boy was i surprised, and what a way to prepare. Like their tofu, the batter is very light. And seasoned well. Shape of the abalone is very much retained. A normal knife cuts through like butter. My god was it tender. Bravo and congrats to this restaurant for this dish. Fresh clean taste as all other fresh seafood. mmMMmm Razor clams in black bean sauce - surprisingly the plating of this dish was underwhelming in comparison to the other dishes. Very sloppy. As if they took the meat from the razor clams, cooked it, then plopped it back in the middle of nicely laid shells. Flavor was very nice as usual. Dessert was provided of 3 different flavors of chinese style custard cubes. Forgot what they are but yummy at least XD Service was amazing throughout the time we were there. Had a "VIP" room as well with another table that didnt arrive till much later in our meal. Very attentive service. Total cost for this meal was $4,200 HKD which translates to over $500 USD. As mentioned in the beginning of this post, i have not been to HK in 10 years. I had forgotten the cost of seafood here. Apparently it was in the 3s when i last came here according to my aunt. Worth this price? maybe not. Experience? pretty good. Another thousand for michelin star experience? eh not bad. Lol

Yelp
My boyfriend, best friend, and I came to Hong Kong for a trip and we absolutely did not plan to eat here at all. However, one of my best friend's close family friends took us here our first night in Hong Kong and boy were we surprised. We didn't realize that this establishment was a 2-star Michelin restaurant until we got there! That's not the best part. The best part was that we got to choose our own seafood. Off to the side, they have a few tanks filled with live shellfish that you are able to choose from. Anything from crabs, lobster, shrimps, etc! Of course we didn't do the choosing -- the host did! We ended up with some deep fried salt & pepper tofu, deep fried scallop fritters, geoduck sashimi, soy sauce prawns, deep fried abalone, razor clams with black bean sauce, Chinese broccoli, and salt/pepper/garlic mantis prawns. Everything was simply delicious because everything was super fresh! My favorite was the geoduck sashimi, soy sauce prawns, and the mantis prawns. I looooooooooove geoduck, or as other people call it, giant clam. It has such a nice, clean, and sweet taste to it! I always eat it when I get the chance! The soy sauce prawns and mantis prawns just had so much flavor to them .. thanks to the salt of course! I kept licking my fingers afterwards because the flavor was just too yummy! Apparently their deep fried abalone was what got them their 2 Michelin star status. Normally, abalone is a pain to cook from what my mom told me. Abalone itself has no flavor so you have to braise it with sauce in order to get any flavor from it. Therefore, traditionally, the abalone dishes are all braised and drenched with sauce. This was the first time that I had it deep fried. They use a specific batter for it as well -- I forgot what kind of batter though ... short memory. The abalone itself was reallllly tender. It was probably the most tender abalone I've ever had. It was not tough to chew at all! As for the taste .. eh, I think I prefer something else haha. I never liked abalone that much to begin with so I'm probably a little biased. The service was really good throughout the meal. They would refill the tea once it was empty. They would change our plates if our plates had a lot of shells on it. They even provided us dessert!! They gave us a variety of custard/pudding cubes! The cost? Around $4,200 HKD. Was the meal worth the dollar amount? To me? Probably not. That's a little too high for comfort. There are probably other alternatives. They are probably extra expensive due to their Michelin star rating. However, if it's the abalone that got them that and I don't care too much for abalone, then I can abort mission next time!!

Yelp
This place is not better than other but really expensive. We are use to go in fancy place but the price don't correspond with the quality. Also the place is not so clean I can jus say better to forgot this place is a trap for tourist as all is not clear with price if you don't speak Chinese

Yelp
Came by Sai Kung to walk around and stopped by here since my uncle said this spot is his favorite (cleaner than others in the area with a nicer ambiance). We ended up going with a set menu and overall the food wasn't bad. Hits: Mantis Prawns was tasty though the seasoning was a little too salty (kind of reminded me of ramen flavor packets tbh), fried tofu wasn't bad with the wasabi sauce, and the fried rice was also pretty good but pretty oily. However, the service was pretty horrendous, especially for a Michelin star restaurant I expect better service. We asked a few questions about the menu and if it would be possible to switch out items since not everyone in the party ate the different types of seafood but the woman who was working literally rolled her eyes so hard I'm surprised her eyes are stuck to the back of her head. She wouldn't even give us the time of day to try and ask about adjustments which I understand if it's not possible but for the sake of customer service is it that hard to try and ask (or at least fake it) to make the customer happy...? For the type of food they're offering, the cost isn't worth the food or putting up with the service. Not sure if it's the jaded Michelin mentality which seems to be the case in several other Michelin-starred restaurants I've been to but you can find better seafood elsewhere in HK.

Yelp
I don't understand how this place has such low ratings on yelp, when it was arguably one of the best banquet style/ Chinese seafood restaurant I've ever been to. Firstly, I want to call out the amazing service here. I was sitting outside but there is indoor seating and an upstairs. A boy came here with crutches and his table was upstairs. unfortunately they don't have an elevator but the host offered to piggy back him up which I thought was amazing. The host also kept giving people a heads up whenever the nearby lot had a cop giving out parking tickets. You can just tell that the staff was very customer first by the type of personal and unconventional service they provided which I, myself have never seen anywhere else before (literally in the world). Location wise, it's right on the water front on sai Kung, so the view is quite pleasant while you're enjoying your meal. After you order your dishes, you can go over to the giant fish tanks to pick out the fresh and live seafood. Literally every dish I had was absolutely amazing in flavor and super fresh. There's a few other Michelin Star rated seafood restaurants within walking distance but I've been told that the flavors here are unparalleled to. Here are some of the things we ordered in no particular order and hopefully somewhat correct names: Fish soup (5/5): surprisingly my favorite most memorable dish. Strong flavors without being overwhelming Fried squid cake (3.5/5): not as special as other items but great texture, crispy on the outside, similar to a deep fried fish ball Geoduck sashimi (5/5): super fresh ! Fried tofu (4.5/5): on the house and probably one of the best fried tofu I ever had. Crispy on the outside and the softest tofu ever inside. Fried abalone (4/5): great deep fried flavor. My only complaint was it was a little chewy but that might also be the natural texture of abalone Fried bigass shrimp whose English name I don't know but directly translated to "pee itself shrimp" (5/5): one of my top dishes, as large as a lobster. Tasted like lobster, deep fried flavor to perfection, but difficult to remove the shell from *update: mantis shrimp is the name* Uni fried rice (4/5): fried rice was cooked to perfection but I had to knock off a star just because it didn't really capture the uni flavor Crispy chicken (5/5): full of meat and flavor was on point, I was amazing at how they were able to make the skin on chicken so crispy as if it was Peking duck Red striped crab cooked in egg white (4/5): a little bland for my liking but the crab meat resembled the middle ground of king crab and singleness crab. Very simple flavors for those who like that Stir fried surf clams in black bean sauce (4/5): good flavor, cooked perfectly, but very similar to regular stir fried clam I would totally come back again on my next visit to Hong Kong! It's a shame that it is a bit of a journey and the best way there is if you know someone with a car, but worth it!

Yelp
The food is great, and the service is too. But I would have expected a lot more from a Michelin restaurant in terms of ambiance. It might be a good idea to start with ironing the tablecloth for example.
