First time flying into FSD airport, one of South Dakota's regional airports. The other I've flown into was Rapid City (RAP), which is the closest to Mount Rushmore and other area attractions.
This time around, I needed to be closer to Lennox, SD, so it was basically flying into Sioux Fall, SD regional airport (FSD) and was reasonably priced versus flying into OMA or even MCI and making the drive up. With that in mind, first impressions was that it is a tiny airport with 8 gates. It's like a small arm of SFO or ORD or even ATL. Small regional airports like this are awesome but can be cost prohibitive if there's not enough demand for air travel here on any given day. Thankfully there is enough to give the city of Sioux Falls, SD to have a nice area to have an airport, so I don't need to drive from another major city to get here. The airport itself is very easy to get in and out of. You can get out of the airport within 10 minutes if you are in a hurry. They have all the latest amenities and restrooms are cleaned daily, if not hourly. It's almost like a small wing of a shopping mall, but with airplanes. It's cute and quaint but a good place to fly into if you need to get in the area and don't want to drive long to get here. They have a small but limited food vendors outside TSA security and assorted rental car companies to fit your needs. Not sure how active Uber and Lyft are in the area, but obviously airport service almost guarantees opportunity for them too. The enjoyment factor is good and hope to fly again here soon if my future travels permit me to do so.
The overall experience here at FSD regional airport was quite nice and pleasant. It was cool that there was a Subway restaurant kiosk at the airport (outside TSA security) and I was able to mobile order my lunch while deplaning the aircraft, so once I got to the Subway kiosk, it was grab and go from there. Gotta love technology these days. I enjoyed the small town vibe that comes from these small regional airports. No real hurry but still need to be on time for your flight out of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. For the most part though, it was a clean and simple process. You don't really need the two hour standard for flights here, but it's typical just in case. You can get in and out of the airport within 15 minutes, assuming no long lines thru the security check points on any given day. Everything is modernized and optimized for the traveling public. It's great that they have this airport here for those of us who need to fly here to Sioux Falls, SD on any random day of the week. It's nice to visit other parts of South Dakota and here I am doing just that. I enjoyed my short time here wandering around the small terminal inbound and out bound trying to shop for souvenirs. Hope to be back sometime.
Sioux Falls regional airport is Sioux Falls, SD airport that's located just outside the city limits. The merchants that do business here accept major credit cards, as well as cash. They have the major car rental companies here as well for your travel needs after your arrival. I didn't need one on this trip since I have a local friend in the area and was gracious enough to accommodate my transportation needs. The airport has a cell phone parking lot for those who need to wait there to pick up friends or family or in some cases, business contacts. Whatever your reason to come to Sioux Falls, SD or the surrounding region, best to fly into FSD. Takes the pressure off of driving long hours to get here when the scenery can be as plain as a white window. I think there is also commuter parking for those who park their car here before jetting off. Overall, can't complain. It's a nice airport that is complimentary to the region it serves. Fly here if you can, it's quite lovely.
5.0 stars for the overall experience.
