Faraway Nantucket Hotel Review | Hotels Above Par

"As the hotel’s Mediterranean-inspired restaurant and drinking den, I found Sister Ship to be a vibey, color-and-texture-forward one-stop for food and cocktails: a sunny spot for boozy brunch by day and a packed, convivial dinner destination at night where patrons order housemate focaccia, tuna crudo, and seafood paella and linger over inventive cocktails like the signature Faraway Mermaid." - Lindsay Cohn

Your dining experience begins the moment you enter the restaurant. The luxurious setting, inviting and playful decor sets the tone for a meal with friends. Fast forward to the culinary part. After a nine month hiatus from the Nantucket social scene, Sister Ship was first re-entry. I went twice in the last three weeks, and, on both occasions the meals were excellent, which we enjoyed family style. The star of the each meal for us was the steak! A generous portion, very tender, perfectly seasoned and can be easily shared among 3 people. This is the best 16oz Ribeye steak on Nantucket for under $80. Let's not forget the Big Eye Tuna Crudo another favorite of mine which I grudgingly shared. The blood orange delivers the precise amount of acidity to brighten the buttery taste of the rich tuna natural flavors. The seafood paella looked amazing, I didn't indulge because I do not eat pork. Chef Nathan & Sous Chef Brandon, you make an excellent team and the consistency is evident! Thank you for taking our palates on an adventure each time we dine at the Sister Ship.

Google
this is one of our favorite dinner restaurants on nantucket! the service is a bit on the slow side, but what’s the rush—that’s the european way! sit down, relax and enjoy some of the most incredible dishes, you won’t regret it! the smoked tuna dip, tuna crudo, gambas and the spicy pork ragu are some of our favorites. their burgers are also incredible—melt in your mouth!

Made a reservation for Saturday night during peak season. Very busy, but got seated right away on the back patio. Great ambiance, great vibes, and food was exceptional. The server was also very careful with my wife’s nut and shellfish allergy so was able to accommodate and have the kitchen adjust several dishes accordingly. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a new-age Mediterranean vibe on Nantucket. Highly recommend the Big Eye Tuna which is an absolute must-have, even without the hazelnut oil. Our Sommelier (Sam) was very knowledgeable, was a pleasure to talk to and gave us the perfect pairings for our meal (not to mention dessert wine!).

Google
Charming garden area and porch perfect for a romantic celebration! The cocktails were inventive and well balanced. Service was crisp. The menu choices were rather mundane. Pork Ragu was solid but unremarkable. Halibut was well composed and fish was a perfect sear. I’d Come here for drinks and ambience not so much dinner…

Lovely Valentine's Day Dinner! For our first time, the service was incredible, cocktails on point and such exceptional food. We started off with the Kale & Native Green Salad and Smoked Fogtown Carrots then the Maple Leaf Duck Breast and Moroccan Chicken Tagine, sharing each dish. We had leftovers which were just as delicious the second day. Everything was top notch, recommend trying the carrots such a unique dish. The only disappointment is in ourselves for not going to Sister Ship sooner!

I am very happy that I was reminded of this amazing gem in the center of town. They worked hard to squeeze six of us in on a Friday in July (other places that we asked laughed us off). The service was top notch, vibe was cool without feeling silly, and each dish really wowed us. They make great use out of a pleasantly simple menu. The check didn’t feel outrageous like other island spots. Will be my new default here.

Had a 9 girl bachelorette dinner on 8/15 and it could not have been better at Sister Ship. The design aesthetic of the restaurant (even the perfumed washrooms) was both stimulating and soothing… Then the food delivered by all-star Bobby. Every bite had me tossing my head back or hands in the air in ecstasy. The sauce with Harissa Chicken was a particular standout. 10/10 recommend on all fronts… including location!

Google
The service and overall dining experience was 1 star at best, but I’m giving it 2 because the food was genuinely great. That said, this was one of the most baffling dining experiences I’ve ever had—especially at this price point. Our bill was $700 for a table of four. I made a reservation a month in advance for 5:30 PM, expecting a full, relaxed dining experience. When we arrived, we were barely acknowledged. When we were finally escorted to our table, it felt like we were a bother. Fine, maybe it's one of those “too cool for school” spots where aloofness is the aesthetic. Whatever. We were seated near the POS area, not some forgotten corner, so we were clearly visible. The restaurant wasn’t even busy yet. We got water and were told someone would be by shortly for our drink order. Then… nothing. Ten minutes, nothing. Twenty minutes. Thirty minutes, still nothing. Nearly 40 minutes later, I got up and approached a group of staff chatting about their weekend plans. I politely asked if I was missing something—should we be ordering somewhere else? One server casually glanced over and said, “I’ll be over in a minute.” She eventually came to the table and said, “Oh, I forgot this was my section,” then took our order with all the enthusiasm of a dial tone. Later, one of my friends switched from white to red wine. She still had white in her glass, but before she could say anything, the server just topped it off with more white. My friend said, “Oh, sorry—I actually ordered a red.” The server sighed loudly, took my friend’s partially finished glass and the new wine, and dumped it all INTO MY GLASS without asking. No apology. Just walked off. A few minutes later, she returned and said, “Oh, I probably shouldn’t have done that,” but still didn’t offer a fresh glass or ask if I was drinking the same wine. The tip is auto-included at 20%, so maybe there's just zero incentive to give a damn. Entrees finally arrive around 6:30, and now we’re getting rushed by both the staff and the manager to wrap up because there are reservations waiting. But our experience didn’t even start until 40 minutes after our actual reservation time. We were celebrating, ordering drinks and dessert, but then the manager came by a third time and was very firm in pushing us to leave. It got so uncomfortable that we paid quickly, without even double-checking the bill, only to realize afterward that we’d been charged for drinks we never ordered. Not surprising, given how spaced-out our server was. There’s also a mandatory “Kitchen Appreciation Fee,” which I honestly didn’t mind—the kitchen was the only redeeming part of the night. The food was excellent: well-seasoned, beautifully plated. But unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to make up for the chaos. At this price point, I expect great food and service. I won’t be back, and I won’t be recommending this place to anyone.

Yelp
This was an exceptional experience! We stopped in for cocktails and had an amazing time. The patio was gorgeous but our server Margaret Louise was the star of the show. She was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and recommended a drink we would have never normally tried and LOVED it. She was working the entire patio and never let a table go with out a drink or attention. I would come back for her customer service alone. Sister ship got a great one!

Yelp
We ate on the patio on a perfect July evening. Our waiters were friendly and informative about the menu. My husband and I knew we wanted shared plates and cocktails before we arrived so it was just a matter of selecting. Everything sounded wonderful but we settled on four - the roasted potatoes, tomatoes on focaccia, hummus platter and shishito peppers. The hummus was our favorite but everything was delicious. My husband ordered the Lucky the Cat cocktail and I ordered the Unruly Seas. Both were so good we each had a second drink. We weren't sure we wanted dessert but one of the waitstaff suggested the cheesecake. Boy was that delicious. The atmosphere was fun, the food delicious the drinks unique and overall a true Nantucket experience. We'll definitely be back.

Leo R.

Yelp
Service was amazing (which isn't always the case in Nantucket). Seated us with one extra person and a baby without flinching. Food was also amazing. Storch encourage the "signature" dishes. Wines fun and their cocktails are made well. Barkeep actually measures the various ingredients - go figure. I really like the decore as well an overall consider it one of the best places on the island.

Yelp
I've been going to this restaurant multiple times a year since it's opened. When the restaurant first opened, it was exquisite. We went back for stroll it was equidistant. We went back earlier this summer and it was exquisite. We had quite a few good meals here but something has changed. Cocktails were not drinkable. When we came in June, we had a beautiful clarified drink that was our favorite drink on the island. I could have made cocktails at home with my limited liquor cabinet. The almost $30 1/4 of a tomato appetizer was unsalted over priced and lacked any creativity-I do better. We had the mussels earlier this year and they were plump and the bread was fresh. During this visit, the bread was stale and the mussels were not good. I would recommend the sauce with the muscles dish as it's a fabulous vermouth nduja sausage and spice. The chicken dish was the most disappointing as it was overcooked soggy, and just generally a very unsatisfying dish. It was very good when I had it earlier this year. What is even more disappointing is we did not eat our chicken, but we asked to wrap it so we can modify it for lunch the next day on the island with some salad and the kitchen forgot to pack one of the uneaten $45 chicken dishes to go.

Yelp
Everything was wonderful . The food, the ambiance, the hotel.. loved it all!! Hope to make it a yearly trip

Yelp
Oysters and Mussels were outstanding. Great service and the ambiance was relaxed and welcoming. Recommend it highly

Yelp
The ambiance and decor here is dope, and the lighting (thankfully) is nowhere near as bright as their website. The menu was very focused, overall, and was clearly meant to highlight the farms and fish suppliers in the area. The scallops were cooked to perfection, and the dish was a perfect harmonious balance; there was sweet from the scallop and the corn, earthiness from the shrooms, and spice & acid from the peppers. The crab toast was also sinfully delicious; I could eat that every day. Additionally, the cocktails were innovative and the wines were clearly very carefully curated. There was something from all over.

Yelp
Cocktails mediocre and food overpriced. Absolutely gorgeous scenery and amazing patio. Better for coffee and pastries in the morning.

Yelp
Absolutely recommend this place. Food was outstanding, especially the tuna crude, patatas bravas, and lamb tagine. Dessert was the highlight: If you love chocolate, the semifreddo is amazing; if you love ginger, the ginger ice cream is the best I've ever tasted...and I always order it when I can. Service was excellent. After a small kerfuffle, the staff made up for it with an extra pour of wine and sincere apology. And the space, well, very coherent with Nantucket's history in sea trade. One of the top 2-3 meals since COVID.

Yelp
We loved the outdoor dining and the service, both impeccable. We had the patatas bravas, roasted cauliflower, roasted duck, scallops, and chicken with snap peas. Everything was delicious and they ensured that my dishes were dairy free. Wish some of the dessert options were alcohol and dairy free but the ingredients were flavorful and elevated. The outdoor courtyard space Is beautiful. Thank you!

Yelp
service was amazing. Food was 100% on point. everything we had was amazing. Octopus, Tuna Tartare, Oysters, Chicken all were perfect. looking forward to our next meal there.

Yelp
In an island saturated with culinary laziness, Sister ship is a breath of fresh air. The interior is the nicest on the island, the servers are engaging / professional and the food is simply the best executed and most creative on the island..period. I've eaten here 5 times and have never had an even mediocre experience - always perfect - all the time! You can get a lobster roll and a boring steamed fish anywhere but nobody else is turning out impeccable lamb tajine with smoked eggplant , a flawless ribeye served with a fun, creative vegetable hot pot and a toothsome black-currant glazed short rib . Even the dessert was perfect - a refreshing semifreddo and an 'Ice Cream Social" which is better than any ice cream on the Island Nantucket is a victim of its own popularity. When proprietors and restauranteurs know that every seat is going to be filled every night in season, they simply don't have to try very hard. No one really cares about sourcing interesting ingredients and nobody cares about the discipline and technique that that goes into creating memorable experiences - Sister Ship just gets it. They are operating at a level that satisfies their own sense of duty to their craft and not getting away with the bare minimum If you look at my previous reviews - I don't hand out five stars very easily. I feel super strongly that the Management and kitchen (headed by Chef Nathan Parsons) are gracing the island with experiences that are as elegant as they are delicious https://www.instagram.com/sistershipnantucket/

Yelp
GREAT ambiance perfect lighting and music volume. Fantastic food I would suggest going with a group 3 or more so you can get many little plates to try everything!

Yelp
The value and service was excellent here. Our server was from Serbia and very polite/attentive and recommended several plates that we loved. We got 4 drinks, a couple small plates and split a larger plate for around 150 bucks which I feel is very good for Nantucket price standards.

Yelp
My favorite among many fine restaurants on Nantucket. The food and service are outstanding! First meal of 2023 included sensational branzino along with an inspired and tasty lamb entree. Look forward to returning where we can enjoy outdoor and indoor dining.

Laura G.

Yelp
I canceled our reservation for 4 people, 12 hours (7am) before our scheduled reservation due to someone in our party having Covid. I looked at my account the next day and was charged $200. My phone calls then went unanswered by the restaurant. I understand times are tough, especially for restaurants, but this seems extremely excessive. If you want to get ripped off by a greedy business, then go enjoy a nice dinner at Sister Ship.

Yelp
Fun spot with nice indoor/outdoor vibes and creative dishes. Fresh ingredients with a worldly lens on everything from apps to desserts!

Yelp
Our party of eight dined at Sister Ship this evening and we were over the moon with every aspect of the experience. First--they accommodated our group even though they didn't have official reservations for eight available. They made it work beautifully and we had a lovely table inside against the window. The interior of the the Sister Ship was impecably decorated--a feast for the eyes. We decided to order tapas style, shared dishes all around with a varied mix of snacks, small plates, and entrees. Everything we ate was outstanding. My personal favorite was the lamb tagine--omg, so good. The fried cauliflower was also a standout. Another notable shining star was the cocktails. I had a lovely mocktail and my fellow dining companions had wonderful, inventive cocktails--every one of them interesting and sinfully delicious. The jalapeno margarita (Faraway Mermaid), the bourbon peach drink (Walk on the Peach), and the hibiscus-infused aperol drink (Step's Spritz) were notably fabulous. There was also a martini-style drink that involved a lot of rum and espresso (Night Watch) that got rave reviews and repeat orders to the bartender. What else to say? The service was great and we were so glad we went. We ate at some of the nicest restaurants on Nantucket this week, and Sister Ship was FAR AND AWAY the best meal of them all. Brava and thank you!

Raymond R.

Yelp
No ta fan. Take simple dishes and mess them up by trying to be fancy. Stick to the basics guys and you could have a winner

Yelp
Loved the venue...super nice vibe! Started with tomato salad...delish! Had swordfish special which was amazing! Beautiful atmosphere (inside and out) on Nantucket!

Yelp
This is a new Nantucket landmark. Beautiful atmosphere, lovely service staff and a simple but delicious menu. Come for drinks, stay for the vibe.

Yelp
Atmosphere and service. Food was fresh but way too simple! My 12 old can make better!

Pam S.

Yelp
This restaurant was our favorite in the island. The Ack salad was so fresh and portion was large enough to share. Our entree was phenomenal and I would not hesitate to put Sister Ship your list of reservations while in Nantucket.

Carol H.

Yelp
Six ladies from Florida visiting for the first time struck gold.....by finding Sister Ship!! The food, staff, and ambiance are ten star!! This was the highlight of our trip!!

Nona M.

Yelp
I really was disappointed in the food. This restaurant has a mingling atmosphere, lovely host and wonderful serving staff. I could not have been treated more kindly HOWEVER the menu is VERY LACKING. They have a share type menu and I understood the concept; there was little to be shared in the portion size and the dishes didn't really step up with flavor NOR was there decent portion of the vegetables that went with the supposed choice. I left hungry and we ordered as suggested. I would like to see a better designed menu for the concept that they are trying to endorse. It is a good /different idea however it is not implemented well. The drinks were good and the staff is on the ball. I however would not go back if I did not see a better menu selection that indeed had what it said it had within the course.

Elizabeth J.

Yelp
The food at Sister Ship is uninspired and mediocre at best. Cocktails are unnecessarily complex. The decor is over the top and gauche. Some of the serving staff represent high points but others are full of themselves and not at all helpful. To top it all off, the proprietors don't care at all about their neighbors and blast music at all hours. It's worse in the summer on weekends but they still play music outside in the middle of February. Sister Ship should set sail for a Faraway land not on Nantucket .

Katrina F.

Yelp
We've been coming to Nantucket every year for over 30 years and particularly love the amazing and sophisticated restaurant scene. Sister Ship is a newcomer and we believe it is a home run--a real asset for this special island! The food is phenomenal and perfect for sharing. The vegetable offerings are incredibly delicious and very satisfying. The oysters are presented in a particularly delicious way. The decor adds to the fun factor to make the dining scene--a main attraction on Nantucket--even more fun.

Candice M.

Yelp
We went there for the first time last night . The ambiance is nice inside, good service. The menu is strange, apparently changes every night or so. Our group of four struggled to put together some apps we wanted. Ended up with fried potatoes, carrots and shishito peppers. Three of the five options.Carrots were excellent, potatoes good, peppers hot. .. main dish two of us had steamed mussels (good), Orechio pasta (too bland) and duck cassoulet (not great). Check the menu for the night before you go.

Patrick M.

Yelp
Top notch ambiance combined with fantastic food and delicious drinks. We will be back!

Sally F.

Yelp
I had dinner with my sister and brother-in-law. We shared everything. We thought the food was delicious, well-prepared and presented. The portion sizes were appropriate and our server's advice about how much to order was correct. We ate on the porch, which was pretty and comfortable. Our server was efficient, friendly, and helpful. I will be very happy to return.

Michael G.

Yelp
My wife and I had a great experience at Sistership! Right off the bat the hosts were friendly and helpful. The drinks were delicious. Our server Olivia was very knowledgeable and helpful. We loved how locally/ sustainably sourced the menu was and everything was delicious. On the way out we had to make reservations to come back next week!

Laura M.

Yelp
Tasteless, tasteless, tasteless. Very disappointing. The restaurant has a great vibe but the food was totally lacking. Everything we had was tasteless and bland. Even the presentation was unimpressive. the mushroom dip looked and sounded yummy but barely grazed my tastebuds. My friend had the roasted cauliflower. She described it as "just ok". I tried it too and we agreed the sauce had no flavor. We split the scallops entree. It came in a deep plain white bowl. Think cereal bowl. There were 4 scallops, some limp vegetables and quite a bit of thin broth. Astonishingly lack luster. If there were capers in there I did not find them, nor did I taste them. When I spoke to the managers they were very interested to hear my feedback but claimed they had not received any other complaints and suggested perhaps their cuisine was just not my taste. Lets just say that when describing the food at Sister Ship, I would not use the words cuisine and taste in the same sentence.
