I am a food critic in Ventura County. I judge food by its presentation and taste, however, I will comment on some negative points because my experience was less than acceptable.
1. We were the only customers in the hour we spent there. We did not see any takeout orders.
2. The owner (or worker) who was preparing the sushi we ordered didn't acknowledge us in any way. In a small place that was empty of customers, a friendly proprietor often makes a positive difference in customer service and the likelihood of customers returning. I will not return.
3. Waitress was not familiar with the menu items and could not answer our basic questions. Further, the owner (the sushi maker) heard our questions and did not bother answering for the waitress.
4. Rice was "old," at least a day old. I am Asian and Asian + food critic = familiarity with fresh steamed rice. When I told the waitress the rice was not warm, I heard someone in the kitchen, possibly the cook, stick it in the microwave. I didn't put up a fuss, I just didn't eat it.
5. The costly price of the ribeye steak did not match the cost. Meat was tough and overcooked, and there was no sign of "marbling" that is characteristic of ribeye. Further, the amount of ribeye was eight thin slices.
6. The ribeye was a "dinner" item that came with salad (wilted lettuce), and miso soup (lukewarm). The presentation of the ribeye was strips of meat on a plate with its watery juices staining the plate making it most unpalatable. I didn't eat that either.
7. I did, however, order mixed tempura and calamari for appetizers, which I ate as my dinner.
8. My husband ordered sushi which was not of good quality, again, for the price was not acceptable.
9. The best item I had was a can of coke. I boxed the rice and ribeye for my dogs.
I went to this restaurant to scout for a place to hold dinner events for the many organizations of which I am a member, and for the many family and friends that visit.
It's unfortunate that at this time when many small businesses are hurting that an owner doesn't make an effort to make his customers feel welcome and enjoy a nice dining experience.
They lost my business and have no idea how much I could have helped them.
