Site Archéologique de Volubilis

Truly a magnificent archeological site! If you love ancient history, you will love Volubilis! Personally, it reminds me of a similar site in Jerash, Jordan. Volubilis has plenty of wonderful mosaics to offer, a glorious Cardo Maximus and Temple of Jupiter! You can easily find a tour guide at the entrance.

The Roman ruins in Volubilis were far better preserved than I expected, and it truly felt like stepping back in time. It was amazing to imagine what life might have looked like during that era. If you don’t book a guide in advance, you can easily hire one at the entrance. Since the site doesn’t have standing buildings like other archaeological sites, I highly recommend going with a guide to really understand what you’re seeing. We wandered around, imagined the ancient scenes, and had such a fun and memorable experience exploring this incredible place.

At the Roman Archaeological site of Volubilis, we were handed over to a local guide who would bring us through the ruins, covering the main street, the court house and even a sacrificial site. There were also intricate mosaic tiles that were restored in this site as well. Sprawling place with over 20,000 people in the past. It had the market place and a Roman bath. Interesting ruins , Cost was 100MAD per foreigner. Has free public toilets. The yellow stone parts are modern restoration and black stones are the original ones.

These Roman ruins date from the first century BC although the settlement existed before then. If you hire a guide, they will relate the story of the various empires, including Idris I, their abandonment, the English ambassador who sketched them which allowed their reconstruction after a devastating earthquake in the 1700s. There's a charming outdoor restaurant here, a coffee and drinks stand, washrooms, lots of parking. The cost of the guides will vary according to the season, 100-300. We were charged MAD 250 for our group of four but you can also just look around by yourself.

Best Roman ruins that I have seen, world class and well preserved. Rivals ephaisus in turkey. Mosaics are the best lve seen with color and detail. Not the easiest to access but well worth the haul.

As we arrived, we met with a local guide for the area. He gave us a great tour of the ruins and lots of interesting information about the site and the architecture. The visit was worth the small entrance fee.

Extraordinary mosaics. Impressive ruins. Easy to imagine some of the houses with their beautiful court yards. Would be five star if they would put up proper signs and explanations. Rather a shame that they did not.
