The Best Hotels in Bali, From Beach Bungalows to Cliffside Villas

"From the moment you arrive, you feel like you’re teetering at the edge of the earth. Six Senses Uluwatu is a fan-shaped property built into a high clifftop on Bali’s southern coast, behind which lies the pool to end all debates about the world’s best pool, with an infinity-edged blue swath of water that extends to meet sky and clouds. Six Senses is a wellness pioneer in the hospitality industry; given that Bali is a mecca for health-seekers, they bring their A-game here with a long menu of spa treatments, an Integrated Wellness Screening, and an organic kitchen garden. —Alex Postman" - Chris Schalkx, Juliet Kinsman

Six Senses Uluwatu

"Set the scene.Teetering at the edge of the earth, well, a high clifftop overlooking the Indian Ocean on Bali’s southern coast. The views arrive in three stages. After the topmost lobby—basically a patio en plein air with startling vistas of ocean and surrounding cliffs—a vertiginously steep road is navigated by buggy to the second lobby. Behind this lies the pool (all three of them), the blue swath of water merging with sky and clouds. Peer over the side and you’ll see the rugged surf crashing on the beach hundreds of feet below. What’s the story?Six Senses has long been on a mission to champion sustainability and wellness. Uluwatu opened in mid-to-late 2018, and is the only hotel in Bali with a Certificate of Sustainability: It composts food, bottles its own water, and recycles grey water; its terraces are landscaped with indigenous plants and villas built almost entirely of sustainably farmed timber. There’s also an organic kitchen garden which supplies many of the ingredients, as well as an organic mushroom hut and beehive. What can we expect from our room?Inspired by traditional village homes, with carved wooden doors leading to a small courtyard and a ceremonial altar. Ours was a two-bedroom villa about halfway down the hill, with bamboo-weave rugs and contemporary-style furniture covered in fabrics that reflect the shifting ocean light—yellow, white, blue, grey. Mini-bars are stocked with arak, the local spirit distilled from coconut palms, and Balinese coffee. Bathrooms have egg-shaped tubs with a view, and an indoor-outdoor river-stone-floored rain shower. They’re easy to dawdle in—especially given that each has its own plunge pool on a private deck. Aside from villas, the entry-level rooms in the main building are a great alternative, with a similar design aesthetic but even better views. How about the food and drink? The main restaurant, Rocka, serves the kind of healthy breakfast that’s become standard in Bali with, count them, 21 types of juices that detoxify and energize, and seriously good French press coffee. For dinner, there are modern takes on Indonesian classics, such as lawars (veg, coconut, minced meat) and nasis (rice dishes). But Crudo has something totally different: Nikkei-style food, created by Japanese immigrants to Brazil, served both raw and grilled over an open fire. This style of cooking would seem entirely out of place, except, as Mexican chef Ricardo Luján explains, Indonesia has great raw materials for this sort of food, from excellent fish to spicy peppers. After a chipotle margarita and a Sambal on the rocks with arak, you might be served Peruvian-style ceviche with sea bass and coriander, pork belly tacos, and steamed coconut buns. And the spa?Given that Bali is itself a destination for health-seekers, this is the Six Senses playing its A-game. Massages, scrubs, and wraps are inspired by Balinese traditions, using herbs grown in the organic garden. If you’re staying a few days, consider the Integrated Wellness Screening, a signature holistic measurement of key bio-markers that the team uses to create an individual program. There’s also a lovely air-conditioned glass yoga pavilion with harnesses for aerial yoga, which isn’t too hard to pick up as a newbie. You can also pick up a few moves in selat, a local kung-fu, which is taught here. Anything to say about the service? The vast majority of staff are Balinese, many from the surrounding villages. All are extremely friendly and solicitous, if a little over-eager. Who comes here?Hard-core wellness seekers and those just looking for a holiday in the sun. What’s the surrounding area like?Uluwatu is legendary in surfing circles—Rip Curl holds annual championships on the breaks beyond the yellow-sand beaches, and smart hotels such as Alila Villas and the Bulgari have been opening in response. Six Senses is more isolated than the others, though you can easily get to, say, Pedang-Pedang Beach, to drink Bintang beer while watching the surfers. Uluwatu Temple, where crowds come to watch the sun set behind the cliffs, is also close, as is the enormous (unfinished) new Garuda Statue, Bali’s icon of greatness and unity, that’s already taller than the Statue of Liberty. Is there anything you'd change? The roads up and down are steep—so steep, in fact, that they can be challenging for someone with any walking impairments to negotiate, and downright hair-raising on a loaded cart. Anything we missed? The kids’ club is characteristically focused on mindfulness—no electronics allowed. Children can participate in an Earth Lab to learn planting and recycling. Equally appealing to kids and adults is Cinema Paradiso, which screens movies outdoors, watched via wireless headsets. Is it worth it—and why? Those who are down for a serious wellness program will especially enjoy it. And the views are incredible." - Alex Postman

The Best New Hotels in the World: 2019 Hot List

"The rocky outcropping of Uluwatu has largely been immune from the crowds and construction afflicting much of the island, and these terraced 10 acres—built onto a towering cliff at Bali’s southernmost point—drive the sense of isolation home. The open-air lobby overlooks the wind-latticed surf, while winding stone switchbacks lead past rows of white stone villas with carved wooden doors to a wide infinity pool that stretches to, well, the infinite horizon (and beyond it, Australia). Like at all Six Senses, the focus here is on wellness, and the spa pavilion has 10 rooms for sessions with local healers or Balinese-inspired scrubs and wraps that incorporate herbs grown in the hotel’s organic garden; this is where anyone seeking physical and emotional betterment should stay while here. This fertile plot, with its own mushroom hut and beehive, also produces a good portion of the kitchen’s produce, which turns up in fresh takes on Indonesian classics—lawars and nasis—and an surprisingly sharp Nikkei-style chef’s menu (that’s Japan by way of Brazil) at the hotel’s smaller restaurant, Crudo. Not surprisingly, sunset from this vertiginous perch conjures a hotel-wide hush, best viewed while sipping a cocktail spiked with arak, the local coconut palm elixir, in the Cliff Bar, or sprawled in a chaise by each breezy villa’s own plunge pool. FLASH POINT Guests seeking deeper transformation can submit to individually prescriptive Wellness Screenings offered at the spa. +62 361-209-0300; sixsenses.com; one-bedroom villas start at $850 per night." - CNT Editors

Absolutely Exceptional Stay! From the moment we arrived, everything about this hotel exceeded our expectations The staff were incredibly welcoming kind, and attentive always smiling and ready to help with anything we needed Every interaction felt personal and genuine, making us feel truly cared for. The service was flawless from the front desk to housekeeping, room service, and even the spa team, everyone was professional yet warm. The rooms were spotless and beautifully maintained, and every detail was thoughtfully taken care of. What stood out the most was the hospitality. The team went above and beyond to ensure our comfort, often anticipating our needs before we even asked. Whether it was arranging transport, customizing meals, or simply checking in on how we were enjoying our stay — they made us feel like VIPs. It was truly one of the best hotel experiences we've ever had. We’re already planning our return. Highly, highly recommended!

What a wonderful holiday. We had been to Bali before but that was Seminyak. We’re hear that’s very crowded now so wanted to try somewhere else. We were attracted to Six Senses through a Luxury Escapes special deal. We are so glad we made that choice. Luxury is the word. Excellent service are another couple of words we would use without hesitation. All of the staff went out of their way to know us and know what we like. Remembering the children’s names, remembering our dietary requirements and preferences and making sure we were treated as if the resort was ours for a week. ||Nami, the guest experience host, went out of her way to ensure she and her team delivered not just a great experience but one we will remember for years to come.||What we loved: the expansive ocean views blended with huge infinity edge pools, authentic but modern Indonesian cuisine at Rokka, vibrant outdoor dining at Cliff Bar, an excellent day spa, our huge villa with its own massive pool, the exceptional service and meticulous follow up of every request… and then there is all that Uluwatu and. Ali more broadly has to offer.

Our stay at six senses uluwatu was incredible. We were treated like royalty from our very first moment on the property till our last. The staff was warm and one of the most courteous in all of Bali. The spa, restaurant and rooms were well maintained and exuded elegance. The breakfast buffet was scrumptious and quite local as well. The views from any spot on the property are mind blowing. The complimentary ice cream was a charming touch. The poolside area and bar had a chill and euro summer vibe. I’d definitely recommend staying here for 2-3 days to explore uluwatu and the resort itself in the best way possible. Honorary mention to the gym, it was decently equipped and had complimentary detox drink.

We have stayed at a couple of Six Senses and this resort at Uluwatu remains true to their culture and philosophy of service, health/wellness, and sustainability. The views are amazing as the resort is high on a cliff. The service stands out here and we like to call out our Guest Experience Manager - Wirata and his team. He was awesome from the time we stepped foot on the property to the day we left.|We also appreciate the Property/Front Office Manager - Thom. As busy as she was, she said hi and spoke to us every single day and was alway available to help. We had a minor situation that she and her team jumped all over on and help resolve super fast. Our family was very impressed. Our dining team was excellent each day/night as well - we want to recognize Anik and Adi. I felt like I never had to wait more than a few seconds if I needed something.|I wish I was able to remember and write down the names of all the team members that helped us from concierge, front desk, bellhops, pool team, spa, etc but they were all excellent and the General Manager should be proud of his/her team. |In addition to the service, the rooms were nice and the spa was amazing. If you are looking for a place to stay in Uluwatu, I highly recommend the Six Senses.

Beautiful hotel perched on top of a cliff with gorgeous view of the ocean. Staff are very attentive especially at Rocka with fab local fare. Our butler Willy was so very helpful, even after our son left a few things behind 🤦🏻‍♀️.

From the moment we arrived at Six Senses Uluwatu, we were greeted with genuine warmth and exceptional hospitality. The staff were not only professional and attentive, but also truly kind-hearted — always smiling, and eager to make our stay as comfortable and memorable as possible. Every interaction felt sincere, from the front desk team to the buggy drivers, restaurant staff, and wellness guides. Their attention to detail and personal touches made us feel incredibly well cared for. The breakfast experience was absolutely amazing. Served at the Rocka restaurant with sweeping ocean views, it featured a thoughtful mix of local Balinese flavors and international options. The quality and freshness of every ingredient really stood out. It’s the kind of breakfast you look forward to each morning, and one you’ll still remember long after the trip. The resort itself is stunning. Set on dramatic cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean, the design blends sustainability with luxury in a way that feels both peaceful and inspiring. Our villa was spacious, beautifully designed, and very private, with an incredible ocean view and a personal pool that we enjoyed every day. I wholeheartedly recommend Six Senses Uluwatu to anyone planning a trip to Bali, whether you’re looking for a romantic escape, a wellness retreat, or simply a quiet place to unwind with world-class service. I’ve already told my friends and family this is one of the best places we’ve ever stayed, and I hope to return again someday.

Our stay at Six Senses Uluwatu from May 12–16, 2025, was more than just a holiday — it was my first trip after completing two years of cancer treatment, and I couldn’t have chosen a more perfect place to stay. From the moment we arrived, the warmth and kindness of the staff were overwhelming. We were welcomed with a delicious drink and the good news that we had been upgraded to a suite with a private pool. The staff knew the reason for the trip, and their genuine happiness and compassion was very touching. Our suite was absolutely stunning — spacious, immaculately clean, and incredibly peaceful. Waking up the next morning to the most amazing view of our infinity pool blending into the ocean was a pinch me moment. The location is breathtaking, and every element of the property is immaculately maintained. We were lucky enough to receive complimentary massages at the Wellness and Spa, and as my partner opted out, I gratefully enjoyed both. My therapist and massage was so good that I requested her again for my second session. The spa is a sanctuary in itself, and as they offer morning yoga it was a beautiful way to start my day. Though we only had three full days, it was enough to know that I want to return — and next time, for longer. This place is not just beautiful; it is food for your soul. Thank you to the entire team for making my first trip post-treatment so special. You gave me more than a luxury getaway — you gave me peace, joy and a sense of deep and healing relaxation.

I had a truly unforgettable stay here in three bedrooms villa, especially while celebrating my birthday. A big thank you to Wira - our guest experience maker, who made our experience so special with his friendly, caring, and positive attitude. He always remembered what we needed and surprised us by decorating our room for my birthday — such a thoughtful gesture! The service, attention to detail, and warm hospitality were outstanding. Highly recommend this hotel and can’t wait to come back!
