The highpoint of this hotel is definitely the very helpful, smart and interesting staff. Yeah front desk and valets!
Even though the decor suggests they are aiming to look like a trendy NY hotel, the staff reminds us that it is a small town after all--albeit an intellectual small town, home of Dartmouth.
In addition to the great staff, I appreciated the complimentary and bottomless access to the Starbucks carafe, and the small, but ok exercise room.
A few things need some work to earn Six South a five star review: first the parking is really expensive, $18 a day. They may as well just roll this into the room cost and not have us feeling gouged. Second, the place aims for some green environmental stuff, yet the carpet (or something) emits a really toxic odor in the hallways. Third, the room stayed kind of dusty, and there weren't quite enough towels after replacements--overall not big deals, but not five stars.
Finally, the restaurant and bar area are eerily empty. There was never more than one person dining here. The menu is posted in the elevator (not sure how this is appetizing) and nothing seems like anything beyond hotel wedding fare. [ If I were a consultant for this establishment, I would suggest they revamp the menu (the town has not one restaurant that specializes in healthy seasonal choices, despite a lot of runners, bikers, hikers and well educated people who tend to want some healthy choices).]
I guess the above sounds kind of critical. But actually this is a really nice place to stay, and I would just like to see them get even better.
Again, a shout-out to the great staff at the front desk and the valets.
