A magical island. As soon as you get close to the island you are overwhelmed by the volume of birds. On arrival, there are steep steps up to a meeting point where one of the wardens will brief you. Then you can explore on your own. You have to keep to the footpaths to avoid damaging the burrows that honeycomb the island. A full walk around is about 4 miles. I would recommend getting one of the island guides which also comes with a basic bird guide. I visited in June 2019 and saw a short eared owl, pipets, wheatears, choughs, linnets, oyster catchers, greater and lesser black backed gulls, fulmars, guilimots, razor bills and a multitude of puffins. You get about 4.5 hours on the island to wander. There are no facilities apart from toilets at the central farmhouse. But there are picnic tables - including some undercover if it is raining. Places are limited to 250 a day so you have to arrive at Lockley Lodge early to buy a boat ticket. At busy times Boats leave at 10:00, 10:30, 11:00, 11:30 and 12:00 (every day apart from Mondays - April through to end Sept). Make sure you take cash as cards are not accepted for either the landing ticket or boat. Current prices are £11 for the landing ticket, £11 for the return boat and £3 if you want a guide. Check first to make sure boats are running.
